Identification of good metaphase spread is an important step in chromosome analysis for genetic disorder detection. In this paper, we propose a rule for chromosome classification to identify good metaphase spreads. The chromosome shapes were classified into four main classes. The first and the second classes refer to individual chromosomes with straight and bended shapes, respectively. The third class is characterized as those chromosomes with overlapping bodies and the forth class is for the non-chromosomal artifacts. Good metaphase spreads should largely contain the first and the second classes while the number of the third class should be kept minimal. Several image parameters were examined and used for creating rule-based classification. The threshold value for each parameter is determined using statistical model. We observed that the empirical probability density function of the parameters can be represented by Gaussian model and, hence, the threshold value can be easily determined. The proposed rules can efficiently and accurately classify the individual chromosome with > 90% accuracy.

A prototype of a remote lab for providing cloud computer resources in optimal manner to achieve an infrastructure lab service is discussed. It has the ability to offer training sessions for different operating systems and networking techniques that are used to build hybrid IT infrastructure solutions. Topologies consisting of machine servers equipped with different operating systems such as Linux, Windows, Solaris etc. that are coupled with each other through different network components and devices, presents an IT infrastructure solution. Such a laboratory will solve many of the problems facing students in developing countries, as academic institutions are not equipped with the appropriate platforms and network components for teaching IT. Moreover, IT departments of business enterprises or IT academic institutions will save big amounts of money as there is no necessity to purchase such expensive systems. Currently, the first prototype is being built using VMware ESX server, VMware vSphere client, GNS3, among others. The development environments used have the capability to manage large pools of virtualized computing infrastructure, including software and hardware. The research is also aimed at carrying out a comparative evaluation to measure some pedagogic and usability criteria.

Collaborative working environments for distance education can be considered as a more generic form of contemporary remote labs. To make this revolutionary learning environment possible, we must allow the different users to carry out an experiment simultaneously. In recent times, multi-user environments are successfully applied in many applications such as air traffic control systems, team-oriented military systems, chat-text tools, multi-player games etc. In this investigation, collaborative working environments from theoretical and practical perspectives are considered in order to build an effective collaborative real lab, which allows two students or more to conduct remote experiments at the same time as a team. In order to achieve this goal, we have implemented distributed system architecture, enabling students to obtain an automated help by either a human tutor or a rule-based e-tutor.

In recent years, the high demand for methods to satisfy process plants performance requirements has shed the light on the subject of process control. This subject has become increasingly important as a result of the large emphasis placed on environmental and safety regulations, plant efficiency and economic factors. The primary objective of process control is to maintain a process at the desire operating conditions safely and efficiently, while satisfying environment and product quality requirements [1]. The nonlinear nature of these processes requires other methods than conventional control. Fuzzy controllers are a practical alternative for such processes and provide human experts the ability to control the process by having intuitive understanding of it. Fuzzy controllers are knowledge-based controllers and do not involve or require a mathematical model of the process throughout its design and implementation. This paper addresses the application of fuzzy control to a continually stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The paper demonstrates the feasibility of this method in light of a highly nonlinear chemical process as such.

This work shows how balanced transconductor-C low-pass ladder filters using a different arrangement of the transconductors to reduce distortion can also have stable common-mode natural frequencies, not requiring common-mode stabilization circuits. Simulated distortion results are presented, interesting sensitivity properties of these filters are discussed, and some limitations of the technique are mentioned.
