Real time rendering of three-dimensional scenes in Ray Tracing is a hard problem. However, parallel implementations have been enabling real time performance, as the algorithm can be highly parallelized. Thus, a custom parallel design in hardware is likely to achieve a good performance. In this paper, we further improve the GridRT architecture overall performance by embedding the ray-triangle intersection computation into the precessing elements that form the architecture. Low cost and high rendering performance are the main concerns in this novel design. The results show that the execution time of each intersection computation is reduced by at least 50%, while the area cost is practically unchanged or even reduced when compared to the original GridRT implementation.

Effective exploitation of the application-specific parallel patterns and computation operations through their direct implementation in hardware is the base for construction of high-quality application-specific (re-)configurable application specific instruction set processors (ASIPs) and hardware accelerators for modern highly-demanding applications. Although it receives a lot of attention from the researchers and practitioners, a very important problem of hardware reuse in ASIP and accelerator synthesis is clearly underestimated and does not get enough attention in the published research. This paper is an effect of an industry and academic collaborative research. It analyses the problem of hardware sharing, shows its high practical relevance, as well as a big influence of hardware sharing on the major circuit and system parameters, and its importance for the multi-objective optimization and tradeoff exploitation. It also demonstrates that the state-of-the-art synthesis tools do not sufficiently address this problem and gives several guidelines related to enhancement of the hardware reuse.

The Ray Tracing rendering algorithm can produce high-fidelity images of 3-D scenes, including shadow effects, as well as reflections and transparencies. This is currently done at a processing speed of at most 30 frames per second. Therefore, actual implementations of the algorithm are not yet suitable for interactive real-time rendering, which is required in games and virtual reality based applications. Fortunately, the algorithm allows for massive parallelization of its computations. In this paper, we present a parallel architecture for ray tracing based on a uniform spatial subdivision of the scene and exploiting an embedded computation of ray-triangle intersections. This approach allows for a significant acceleration of intersection computations, as well as, a reduction of the total number of the required intersections checks. Furthermore, it allows for these checks to be performed in parallel and in advance for each ray. In this paper we discuss and analyze an ASIP-based implementation using FPGAs and a GPGPU-based parallel implementation of the proposed architecture. The performance of both implementations are reported and compared.

The Smith-Waterman (SW) algorithm is one of the widely used algorithms for sequence alignment in computational biology. With the growing size of the sequence database, there is always a need for even faster implementation of SW. In this paper, we have implemented two Recursive Variable Expansion (RVE) based techniques, which are proved to give better speedup than any best dataflow approach at the cost of extra area. Compared to dataflow approach, our HW implementation is 2.29 times faster at the expense of 2.82 times more area. © 2010 IEEE.

The nonlinear effects of partial erasure and transition shift, however, often limit the performance attained by the partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) detector because of model mismatch. Conventionally, the nonlinear effects are either ignored or approximated by linearization technique. In the article, a PRML detector for the PR4 model including the nonlinear effects has been developed to improve the detector performance. The new representation is more accurate and the corresponding PRML detector has better performance without increasing the realization complexity. computer simulation results show that the new representation outperforms the conventional ones due to the enhanced modeling capability. The method is also expected to be applied in the high order partial response channel. © 2010 IEEE.

As magnetic recording densities grow, the nonlinear distortions, known as transition shift and partial erasure, arise and limit the performance of the detector. Despite that the transition shift can be compensated by a write current technique, the effect of partial erasure complicates the evaluation of the correlation functions for the storage data and the nonreturn-to-zero- inverted modulated data. In this article, we observe the dependence between the partial erasure effect and storage data, and derive the correlation functions for storage data and nonreturn-to-zero-inverted modulated data in a high density magnetic recording channel. The closed-form of the correlation functions are obtained, these results are applied to verify the timing function of the Muller & Mueller's phase detector in a partial response class IV channel via computer simulations. © 2010 IEEE.

In order to capitalize on the technologists' potential to enhance global competitiveness, new strategies must be devised to encourage high schools, community colleges, and some other nontraditional pools to seek engineering technology degrees. This type of proactive philosophy will undoubtedly increase the number of much needed technologists in this country. Community colleges have traditionally done an exceptional job of preparing technicians for industry. But, graduates of AAS programs experience more difficulties in securing transfer credit than their Associate of Arts (AA) degree counterparts. From the high school point of view, they have been less than successful in transitioning their students in STEM pathways. We feel that a three tiered collaborative effort is needed between Universities, Community Colleges and High Schools to have a reasonable chance to increase the pool of candidates into engineering technology programs. At our institution, we have a great deal of experience in articulating with two-year programs and looking to expand similar relationships with regional high schools. With two-year the problem lies in the inherent difficulty of determining university course equivalency for AAS technical courses;a dilemma not characteristic of AAS transfer initiatives. When transferring to a four-year program, direct equivalency is not always possible due to regulatory requirements;but in an outcome-based culture, it should be possible to create supplementary modules that make such transfers feasible. With high schools we have identified the absence of pathways that channel STEM-inclined students into programs including engineering technology. The objective of this paper is to document the need for four-year institutions to participate in creating pathways that lead students both from high schools and community colleges into engineering technology programs. There are many university initiatives that focus on technology-based solutions to address the needs of marginalized communities. The technology-based solutions are intended to be economically and socially sustainable. These endeavors are usually well-meaning, creatively designed, and enthusiastically deployed, but do not achieve the sustainable impact envisioned at the outset of the projects. To addresses these shortcomings, at The Pennsylvania State University we are applying three key tenets of systems thinking to our humanitarian engineering and social entrepreneurial ventures: 1) employing regulation via feedback to ensure that the system is actually working;2) defining systems by their interactions and their parts;and 3) understanding that systems exhibit multi-finality. The concept of multi-finality refers to (designing) a system where the individual actors (inputs), the subsystems, and their interactions, all meet their own goals while the system as a whole also meets its goals. In this paper, we lay the framework for the application of specific systems thinking concepts to increase the probability of success of global development ventures. We provide simple yet compelling examples from two different ventures to illustrate the power of systems thinking to train innovative problem-solvers and increase the probability of success of technology-based social entrepreneurial ventures in Africa. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

The clinical data stored in the health information system can be categorized as two types including structuralized data and non-structuralized ones. In the paper, a data extraction system is developed to assist data retrieval from the non-structuralized textual clinical documents such as radiology reports, pathology reports, etc. The system provides keyword-based and semantic-driven data matching methodology to extract the specific information from the textual clinical documents. The matching methodology provides the capabilities to recognize the selected keywords and the related semantics in the documents. Through the extraction verification interface, clinicians can extract and verify the matched information semi-automatically. The extracted data can be filled into predefined case-oriented templates. The structuralized data can be stored back into the clinical data warehouse for further analyzing. Moreover, the case-oriented templates can support collecting corresponding extracted data for various researches. ©2010 IEEE.
