The Information Age has revolutionized the way students learn in the classroom. The United States Military Academy (USMA) emphasizes the importance of Information Technology (IT) through an academy-wide IT specific goal. This goal supports the USMA's mission of producing Army Officers who can respond effectively to technological changes in the defense of our nation. Courses augmented with IT can be daunting for cadets who lack the experience and confidence level to succeed in the course. As a result, these types of courses are avoided by cadets if at all possible. This is not an option for an aspiring officer who will lead the soldiers of tomorrow on a digitized battlefield. Since 1990, cadets have been issued a computer which has played a central role in bringing the power of IT to all graduates of the Military Academy. Integration of IT in the curriculum begins early with every cadet receiving a laptop computer. An integrated software package is included to support any course of instruction. Cadets receive two courses in IT, one in their freshman year and one in their junior year. The freshman course teaches the cadet the basic functionality of the laptop, a basic programming language, and creating a basic website. The junior course builds on the freshman course by teaching the cadets to create an advanced website, design and build a network, manage a database, and create an information system. IT plays a central role in several overlap courses between engineering and the humanities in such areas as information warfare, terrorism, and the legal aspects of intellectual property rights. What makes this approach unique is the methodical diffusion of IT into course design which removes the barrier between learning and the implementation of IT as an academic multiplier. An academy-wide committee consisting of 12 members is responsible for examining collected data to see how well the Military Academy is meeting its LT goal. We present a wireless capacitive sensor for ambulatory ECG monitoring. The device is capable of detecting electrocardiographic potential through underwear. It is based on capacitive coupling involving the electrode, the underwear, and the skin. Validation of the system revealed the following: (1) The frequency response of the device with the underwear revealed that the gain of the detected signal was reduced, but distortion of the signal within the pass-band (from 6 to 45 Hz) was minimal even with the underwear. (2) The signal displayed a periodic waveform synchronized with the simultaneously recorded ECG, even when the underwear was inserted between the electrode and the skin. (3) Although the signal was seemed deteriorated slightly while walking, R-waves were recognized easily. Although there is still room for improvement in terms of its practical use, the proposed approach appears promising for application to ambulatory ECG monitoring.

It is important for students getting suitable feedback information when either they are doing or completing a learning activity. This research tries to know what kind of feedback message is really useful to students. For this purpose, this paper develops a workable e-learning environment with feedback mechanism to gather the learning effects of students with different kinds of feedbacks. The experiment involves five fifth-grade classes and divides five classes into three different groups. The students in the control group have no feedback and students in the other two groups have different kinds of feedback messages. The analysis of experiment data contains two parts: the first one evaluates the feedback efficiencies for all groups;and, then all students will be separated into three clusters based on their academic achievement in order to do further analysis.

In Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), wireless nodes exchange routing messages among themselves to build routing tables. Since routing messages are sensitive and critical information, they should be kept confidential and protected. However, the existing WMNs convey the routing messages in an open medium (air) where the messages can be accessed publicly. By abusing the messages, attackers could launch various kinds of attack such as black hole, wormhole, reply, denial of services, and routing table poisoning. In this paper, we present a secure routing architecture for WMNs in which the routing messages are protected by making use of powerline as the routing medium. We also propose three routing protocols for the proposed architecture. The implementation costs of these protocols are evaluated under different scenarios.

Mobile Learning makes students get the advantages of both traditional learning and e-learning. How to give students learning sequence suggestions in the mobile learning environment is a big issue and is also the goal of this paper. This research uses knowledge map to store the characteristics of each learning object and designs a situated map to represent spatial knowledge in the mobile learning environment. By using these two knowledge structures, knowledge map and situated map, the system created by this research can generate various navigation sentences and ask students to observe the characteristics of learning objects. This research also takes information theory into consideration in order to decide which navigation sentence should deliver to the student first. The system calculates the entropy for each generated sentence and finds the most appropriate one to deliver to the student. At the end of this paper, an experiment system is implemented for the 5th year biology course, Plant Observation.

This paper designs a learning notification express delivery service for providing students information about their learning status, their next learning activities, and even reminder notes. The learning notification express delivery service uses Petri-net for modeling learning activities. In order to make students knowing what status they are and what activities they need to do during the learning process, a learning planner is also developed to make teachers feel more comfortable in planning their teaching schedule. © 2006 IEEE.

A new system has been developed for obtaining electrographic potential through thin underwear inserted between the measuring electrodes and the skin of a neonate or an infant when lying supine. The system is based on capacitive coupling involving the electrode, the underwear, and the skin. Validation of the system revealed the following: (1) the signal detected using the system displayed a periodic waveform synchronized with the simultaneously recorded ECG, even when thin underwear was inserted between the electrode and the skin, (2) the gain of the system when the cloth was inserted decreased as the frequency increased. The present system appears promising for application to bedding as a non-invasive and awareness-free method for ECG monitoring of neonates or infants. However, there is still room for improvement in terms of its practical use, because the high-frequency component of the signal was depressed in comparison with the reference ECG © 2006 IEEE.

A noncontact method for measuring saccadic eye movement with two high-speed cameras is proposed. The method is based on image processing for acquiring the center gravity of one pupil of the subject and also on stereo photogrammetry for estimating three-dimensional coordinate of the pupil. The proposed method was examined through experiments using a imitated eye ball and using a real human subject. The results showed a possibility of the method for the measurement. Since dynamic characteristics of the saccadic eye movement is reported as a promising index for monitoring human vigilance level according to the author's previous research works, this method can be utilized for accident prevention system in the future. However, there is still room for improvement in measuring accuracy and stability to the body motion in terms of its practical use

The neural networks are successfully applied to many applications in different domains. However, due to the results made by the neural networks are difficult to explain the decision process of neural networks is supposed as a black box. The explanation of reasoning is important to some applications such like credit approval application and medical diagnosing software. Therefore, the rule extraction algorithm is becoming more and more important in explaining the extracted rules from the neural networks. In this paper, a decompositional algorithm is analyzed and designed to extract rules from neural networks. The algorithm is simple but efficient;can reduce the extracted rules but improve the efficiency of the algorithm at the same time. Moreover, the algorithm is compared to the other two algorithms, M-of-N and Garcez, by solving the MONK's problem. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.
