At the outset of this paper, we studied the global competition that makes it necessary to increase the number of well trained engineers and technologists. We then listed the kinds of global learning outcomes that are needed to enhance the education of this workforce, and enumerated ways to teach these skills to students without incurring excessive costs. In addition, we discussed different strategies to increase the overall numbers of globally competent engineers and technologists. It is our belief that more students will choose to study engineering when they are told that engineers with management and leadership skills are highly desirable. For example, students, who would otherwise become business majors due to an inherent need to manage and lead, can now visualize engineering or technology as alternative gateway to their career destinations. The number of technologists can also be enhanced by creating student-centered transfer opportunities of A.A.S. degree holders and Certificate holders. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

Frozen water pipes lead to leaks that result in property damage and repair costs. Frozen water pipes not only occur in northern climates, but also in more moderate climates that have occasional periods of temperatures below the freezing point. Water pipes at high risk for ice formation include ones outside of buildings, in poorly insulated structures or in seasonal buildings that are not heated during the winter months. Methods of protection include heating the building, insulation and heat tape on exposed water pipes, turning off the water supply and draining all pipes of water, or turning on a water valve to allow a continual flow of water through the pipes during the entire period having risk of low temperatures. The flow would hinder ice formation in the pipes. These protective measures have associated costs for equipment, heating fuel, and water loss. If the low temperature drops further or is sustained for longer periods than expected, there would still be a risk of frozen pipes. The purpose of this project was to develop and test a prototype system to monitor temperature, and initiate intermittent bursts of water flow only when temperatures are low enough to have risk of ice formation in the water pipes. The prototype utilized a temperature sensor, Arduino microcontroller, power supply, relay switch, and solenoid valve. The solenoid valve was incorporated into the water facet of a sink. When the sensor detected temperatures below the threshold of 25°C, intermittent bursts of flow were initiated, with 20 seconds of water flow followed by 2 minutes of no flow. Each flow event was recorded in a web service. A HTTP Get request was transmitted to a Google App Script program that stored the date and time in a Google Sheet. The owner or manager could remotely monitor the intermittent flow events. © 2019 IEEE.

In this research, we have been developed teaching materials for electromagnetics that demonstrate theories using real-world actual applications (capacitors, coils, piezoelectric elements, Wireless Power Transfer(WPT), WiFi, direct-current motor, etc.) presented as animations and video data via Web services. Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and JavaScript were used to create the Web services for teaching materials. Recently, the lack of academic ability of Japanese engineering course students has become a large social problem at Japanese higher education. In particular, in the field of electrical engineering education, the visualization and mathematical abilities of students have been declining remarkably. In addition, today's teaching materials for educational institutions in Japan tend to reply primarily on rote learning. However, we consider that rote learning is not the primary method for university education. We tested our new developed materials on students learning motivation of electromagnetics and evaluated their effectiveness with some questionnaires. It was clear that the new teaching method has effectiveness for increasing learning motivation of Electromagnetics. © 2020 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Study on estimating electric potential in space between parallel electrodes

We have been studying on estimating distribution of permittivity between measurement electrodes using capacitance and electric potential. Two arc electrodes were separated by long distance and there electrodes were surrounded by additional electrodes respectively. In past research work, we carried out numerical electric analysis for calculating the capacitance and electric potential using Finite Element Method(FEM) and compared with experimental and numerical results. The capacitance values were almost agree with experimental and numerical results. However, the electric potential values were different between experimental and numerical results in conventional studies. In this paper, we proposed an equivalent circuit including the stray capacity and measurement method for capacitance, the electric potential in space between long distance electrodes was estimeded. © 2018 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

We have been studying on measuring capacitance and potential using long distance electrode for estimating a permittivity distribution. The estimating method of permittivity distribution was proposed using Finite Element Method (FEM) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). However, the measurement accuracy was not reviewed. In this paper, we carried out numerical analysis using FEM in case of change of diameter, position and permittivity of a rod of dielectric and discussed the measurement accuracy of capacitance and potential. © 2018 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Recently, the research on daily health monitoring using a wearable sensor has been continually evolving. In the future, when this system is actually implemented, a vast amount of data transmission will be conducted from multiple sensors to the cloud server. A system capable of transmitting, storing, processing, and visualizing massive volumes of data is necessary for health monitoring. This research aims to develop a health monitoring system that can accommodate a high amount of data with high performance. The proposed techniques include numerous modifications to system architecture and technology. In the system architecture, a multi-database is proposed to enhance the reliability of the system. As an enhancement to the technology aspect, a time series database and MQTT server are proposed. As the result, the proposed system achieves significantly better performance in terms of throughput, database-writing speed, and database-reading speed compared to the existing system. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper designs a learning notification express delivery service for providing students information about their learning status, their next learning activities, and even reminder notes. The learning notification express delivery service uses Petri-net for modeling learning activities. In order to make students knowing what status they are and what activities they need to do during the learning process, a learning planner is also developed to make teachers feel more comfortable in planning their teaching schedule. © 2006 IEEE.

Retinal Blood Vessel Tracking and Diameter Estimation via Gaussian Process With Rider Optimization Algorithm

Retinal blood vessels structure analysis is an important step in the detection of ocular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity. Accurate tracking and estimation of retinal blood vessels in terms of their diameter remains a major challenge in retinal structure analysis. In this research, we develop a rider-based Gaussian approach for accurate tracking and diameter estimation of retinal blood vessels. The diameter and curvature of the blood vessel are assumed as the Gaussian processes. The features are determined for training the Gaussian process using Radon transform. The kernel hyperparameter of Gaussian processes is optimized using Rider Optimization Algorithm for evaluating the direction of the vessel. Multiple Gaussian processes are used for detecting the bifurcations and the difference in the prediction direction is quantified. The performance of the proposed Rider-based Gaussian process is evaluated with mean and standard deviation. Our method achieved high performance with the standard deviation of 0.2499 and mean average of 0.0147, which outperformed the state-of-the-art method by 6.32%. Although the proposed model outperformed the state-of-the-art method in normal blood vessels, in future research, one can include tortuous blood vessels of different retinopathy patients, which would be more challenging due to large angle variations. We used Rider-based Gaussian process for tracking blood vessels to obtain the diameter of retinal blood vessels, and the method performed well on the 'STrutred Analysis of the REtina (STARE) Database' accessed on Oct. 2020 (https://***/~ahoover/stare/). To the best of our knowledge, this experiment is one of the most recent analysis using this type of algorithm. © 2013 IEEE.

In the future, we need to look more closely at the differences that exist between the two groups in their responses to survey statements 4, 5, and 10. In both cases, less than 80% of students had an agreement level that was two or greater;there remains is a significant variation that needs to be explained. While the same presenters were responsible for the both presentations, a more tightly controlled presentation for the two groups may be a way to reveal discrepancies. We believe it would be helpful to administer a pre-survey prior to the presentation using general statements that touch upon GEE outcomes. The post survey may help clarify the impact of the presentation itself. We have been in the business of promoting diversity for some time now. We are all too aware of the negative reaction some students have: "why do I need to know this?" It is our belief that attitudes about exposure to issues like cultural diversity can be influenced positively by teaching it as an essential component of globalization. We selected two case studies, a familiar scenario, and an unfamiliar one. The US was selected as the familiar place and India was chosen as the unfamiliar location for reasons that include growth patterns and author experience. The survey conducted after the presentation actually supports this idea (Statement 1, table 2). All respondents agreed with the premise that "studying people and cultures are important to the innovation process in a global economy." Further analysis of data reveals the encouraging result that students demonstrate an understanding that they will be working in a global economy (Fig. 1, GEE outcome h). © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.
