Assessing Hemodynamic Changes in Cerebral Aneurysms Post Coil Embolization: A Preliminary Investigation

A cerebral aneurysm is a weakened area in the wall of a blood vessel within the brain that causes the vessel to bulge outwards. The choice of treatment depends on various factors including the size and location of the aneurysm and the risk of rupture, and should be tailored to individual situations rather than following a universal approach due to their variability among individuals. This approach provides the possibility of choosing precise treatment plans that are proper for each patient's circumstances. The utilization of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) allows for the prediction of after-surgery hemodynamic changes before any surgical approach. The goal of this research was to investigate the flow characteristics and hemodynamic parameters in cerebral arteries before and after endovascular embolization treatments using CFD in three patient-specific geometries with at least one aneurysm at the middle cerebral artery's bifurcation. To model the coiling, the computational domain was divided into two fluid domains, a general fluid domain consisting of the parent arteries and a porous domain inside the aneurysm. CFD modeling was conducted to simulate blood flow in pre- and postcoiling scenarios. Results showed that the coiling model with different porosity values led to a redirection of blood flow away from the aneurysm sac. Additionally, changes in shear stress indicated potential alterations in susceptibility to vascular remodeling. In conclusion, these findings indicated that utilizing CFD modeling for simulating blood flow in patient-specific cerebral arteries could be utilized to predict hemodynamic parameters before any treatment. The development of video laryngoscope via additive manufacturing for use in a pre-hospital environment

Purpose: Due to failures that occur during intubation, some authors advocate that intubation should always be done with a video laryngoscope. What makes the implementation of this recommendation difficult, especially in developing countries, is the high price of the device. Thus, the objective of this study is to present a low-cost video laryngoscope developed via additive manufacturing, being the first device to have the safety parameters duly tested according to the ISO 7673:2020 standard. Methods: A video laryngoscope with a Macintosh-type rigid blade was developed. After modeling it in the CAD-3D SolidWorks® program, the prototype was printed in PLA (polylactic acid), and load and fatigue tests were carried out with the MTS 810/793 testing machine. Results: The main results were an improvement in ergonomics (with a better fixation of the camera wire and camera positioning). Load and fatigue tests showed compliance with the requirements of the ISO 7673:2020 standard. The first is that when subjected to a traction force of 65 N, the center of illumination must not move more than 10 mm (the average movement was only 3.95 mm). The second is that when subjected to a traction force of 150 N, the laryngoscope blade must not break (348 N of load was applied and the piece resisted without breaking). Conclusion: It was shown that the Macintosh-type PLA video laryngoscope has the potential to become a safe and low-cost tool in the emergency intubation arsenal. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of biomedical engineering 2023.

Tissue engineering is a multidisciplinary field that uses two and three dimensional structures called scaffolds to create a physical support for growth, gas change and nutrition of the cell. Those scaffolds can be synthetic, biological or a combination of both types of material, but the porosity, the interconnectivity of pores and pore size are among the most important physical parameters of the scaffolds. The estimation of these characteristics is still a challenge in Tissue engineering, as it involves techniques and methods that need to be non-toxic and non-destructive, and that must operate in structures with dimensions of the order of micrometers (µm). The bioimpedance spectroscopy (bis) technique has been reported as a potential non-invasive monitoring of scaffold porosity and biological tissue growth. This work aims to study how bioimpedance spectroscopy in conjunction with Archiés law data can be used to characterize the porosity and pore connectivity of 3D cellular structures. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Osteoporosis is a common disease characterized by low bone density and structural deterioration of bone tissue. For a successful course of treatment and fracture avoidance, early diagnosis of this disease is essential. The aim was to provide a novel method for osteoporosis prediction using Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based framework. The purpose was to predict the likelihood of osteoporosis based on the Bone Mineral Density (BMD), along with other characteristics such as age, weight, height, gender, and Body Mass Index (BMI) extracted from medical reports and images collected from a comprehensive medical center in Lebanon. Three machine-learning algorithms were implemented and tested, Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Decision Trees (DT). Variety of quantitative statistical metrics were used to evaluate the performance of our framework, upon training and testing our algorithms. The metrics that were employed to evaluate our results included accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and F-score, in addition to the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve and the Area Under the Curve (AUC). Experimental Results demonstrated that both the SVM and LR algorithms achieved the highest accuracy of detection of osteoporosis as compared to existing algorithms applied in this field, with an accuracy of 89%. The sensitivity of diagnosis obtained was 98% by LR and 97% by SVM and surpassed the sensitivity obtained by DT. As such LR showed the best performance. The output of the algorithms could help medical doctors assess patients automatically. These findings demonstrated the potential of AI in osteoporosis prediction and thus prevention, highlighting the significance of early diagnosis. Thereby as a future prospect, choosing carefully the framework is crucial and additional algorithms have to be considered and tested. © 2023 IEEE.

Classification of auditory ERPs for ADHD detection in children

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the children’s most common neurodevelopmental conditions. ADHD diagnosis is based on evaluating inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity symptoms that interfere with or reduce daily functioning. Although electroencephalography (EEG) tests are used for ADHD diagnosis, they are generally considered a complement to clinical evaluation. This paper proposes an approach to classify EEG records of children with ADHD and control cases. We identified and extracted relevant features from EEG signals of 47 children (22 diagnosed with ADHD and 25 controls) and evaluated machine learning techniques for classification. We used the 2-tone oddball paradigm to elicit the subjects’ auditory event-related potentials (ERP), and we recorded EEG signals with a portable headset for approximately five minutes. In the feature extraction stage, we included measures from cognitive evoked potentials, frequency bands power, chaos quantification, and bispectral analysis, in addition to the age of the children and the number of high-pitched tones the children counted during the test. The SVM and Trees algorithms obtained the best performance for 86.36% accuracy and 95.45% sensitivity. These findings demonstrate the potential of portable EEG-based systems to complement standard clinical assessments, offering an objective, time-efficient, and accessible approach to support early ADHD diagnosis. Achieving high accuracy and sensitivity in classification is critical to reducing the risk of misdiagnosis and ensuring timely intervention, ultimately improving patient outcomes. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The rapid evolution and complexity of medical-hospital equipment (EMH), as well as the appearance of adverse events that had not occurred until then, resulted, in the United States, in the emergence of the area of activity called Clinical engineering (CE). In Brazil, although the profession does not have its proper recognition and regulation, the need for a qualified and designated professional to manage health technologies, within a Health Care Facility (EAS), has been increasingly evident. To manage these technologies, in addition to being mandatory, is the responsibility of each Hospital, requiring dedication and control. The use of computerized systems (SI), aiming at successful management of health technologies, including the preparation of inventories and control of technical intervention events (e.g., maintenance), has been consolidated. Despite having available in the market diversified software intended for the realization of maintenance management, notoriously, the foundation, structuring and functionality of these, are convergent. The present work aimed to list, through bibliographic references, parameters and essential functions, which should make up an SI for the management of EMH, applied in the Departments of CE in Hospital Units. Thus, through the study carried out, it was observed that a software for this purpose can be divided into four main modules: Module of registrations, EMH inventory, service orders (maintenance) and, reports/indicators. Finally, given the functionalities identified in the analyzed SI, it is suggested to conduct new studies related to the incorporation of specific tools and functionalities, aimed at CE in Brazil. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Hair follicles (HF) are important anatomical structures that are responsible for maintenance of the hair cycle. However, hair disease can affect the hair follicle directly with the modern treatment still riddled with side effects due to lack of full understanding of hair nature. The study aimed to investigate the effect of alginate hydrogel with extracellular matrix (ECM) protein encapsulation on activity of dermal papilla (DP) spheroids. The DP cells were aggregated to mimic its native spherical structure and introduced into alginate solution mixed with ECM. The mixture was then crosslinked with calcium chloride to form hydrogel. The encapsulation elevated alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, which is a DP molecular marker. This work demonstrates that DP encapsulation in alginate with ECM can manipulate DP spheroid activity. © 2024 IEEE.

Seismocardiography (SCG) has attracted significant interest for monitoring cardiac health and diagnosing cardiovascular conditions. While traditional SCG methods rely on uncomfortable chest-mounted accelerometers, recent research explores non-contact approaches, including analyzing video recordings of the chest. In this study, three computer vision-based methods including Lucas-Kanade optical flow, template tracking, and Gunnar-Farneback optical flow were evaluated for extracting SCG signals from ordinary camera-recorded chest videos. The study focused on right-to-left and head-to-foot SCG signals obtained from 13 healthy subjects during breath-hold at the end of exhalation and inhalation. Comparative analysis was performed by calculating the mean squared error (MSE) and root MSE (RMSE) between the vision-based SCG signals and the gold-standard accelerometer signals. Visual and quantitative analyses showed that the Lucas-Kanade and template tracking methods estimated vision-based SCG signals closely resembling the accelerometer data, particularly in the head-to-foot direction. The Lucas-Kanade method had MSE values ranging from 0.14 to 0.93, RMSE values from 0.38 to 0.96, average correlation values of 0.82±0.09. The template tracking method showed MSE values between 0.12 to 0.94, RMSE values from 0.35 to 0.97, and average correlation values of 0.83±0.10. In comparison, the Farneback method had higher MSE values ranging from 0.20 to 1.07, RMSE values from 0.44 to 1.03, and average correlation values of 0.76±0.11. These results suggest the effectiveness of Lucas-Kanade and template tracking methods for non-contact SCG signal extraction from chest video data. © 2024 IEEE.
