Background: Surveillance of health care-associated infections is an essential component of infection prevention programs, but conventional systems are labor intensive and performance dependent. Objective: To develop an automatic surveillance and classification system for health care-associated bloodstream infection (HABSI), and to evaluate its performance by comparing it with a conventional infection control personnel (ICP)-based surveillance system. Methods: We developed a Web-based system that was integrated into the medical information system of a 2200-bed teaching hospital in Taiwan. The system automatically detects and classifies HABSIs. Results: In this study, the number of computer-detected HABSIs correlated closely with the number of HABSIs detected by ICP by department (n=20;r=.999 P<.001) and by time (n=14;r=.941;P<.001). Compared with reference standards, this system performed excellently with regard to sensitivity (98.16%), specificity (99.96%), positive predictive value (95.81%), and negative predictive value (99.98%). The system enabled decreasing the delay in confirmation of HABSI cases, on average, by 29 days. Conclusions: This system provides reliable and objective HABSI data for quality indicators, improving the delay caused by a conventional surveillance system. © 2020 JMIR Publications Inc. In this paper, we propose the directional local mean difference level set method (DLMD-LS). Our work is focused on the segmentation for a urinary bladder lumen in a T2 weighted image taken during brachytherapy. The boundary is detected as the region where the intensity means of the areas inside and outside the zero-level contour (edge) are high. The contour is controlled such that it stops evolving only at the boundary of the bright object inside the dark surrounding. Since the intensity mean is used, the DLMD-LS is more tolerant to noise than the conventional level set methods which detect the boundary as the part with large intensity gradient. Furthermore, the mean is calculated locally; therefore, the function is less affected to the different intensity distribution inside the lumen. The experiment demonstrates the superior noise tolerance and better capability to capture the blurred boundary of our proposed DLMD-LS to the directional level set method and the level set which detects the boundary according to the intensity distribution of the entire lumen.

Phage display is a resourceful tool to, in an unbiased manner, discover and characterize functional protein-protein interactions, create vaccines, and engineer peptides, antibodies, and other proteins as targeted diagnostic and/or therapeutic agents. Recently, our group has developed a new class of internalizing phage (iPhage) for ligand-directed targeting of organelles and to identify molecular pathways within live cells. This unique technology is suitable for applications ranging from fundamental cell biology to drug development. This unit describes the methods for generating and screening the iPhage display system, and explains how to select and validate candidate internalizing homing peptide. © 2014 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

High-level spinal cord injury (SCI) survivors face every day two related problems: recovering motor skills and regaining functional independence. Body machine interfaces (BoMIs) empower people with sever motor disabilities with the ability to control an external device, but they also offer the opportunity to focus concurrently on achieving rehabilitative goals. In this study we developed a portable, and low-cost BoMI that addresses both problems. The BoMI remaps the user's residual upper body mobility to the two coordinates of a cursor on a computer monitor. By controlling the cursor, the user can perform functional tasks, such as entering text and playing games. This framework also allows the mapping between the body and the cursor space to be modified, gradually challenging the user to exercise more impaired movements. With this approach, we were able to change the behavior of our SCI subject, who initially used almost exclusively his less impaired degrees of freedom - on the left side - for controlling the BoMI. At the end of the few practice sessions he had restored symmetry between left and right side of the body, with an increase of mobility and strength of all the degrees of freedom involved in the control of the interface. This is the first proof of concept that our BoMI can be used to control assistive devices and reach specific rehabilitative goals simultaneously.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) survivors generally retain residual motor and sensory functions, which provide them with the means to control assistive devices. A body-machine interface (BoMI) establishes a mapping from these residual body movements to control commands for an external device. In this study, we designed a BoMI to smooth the way for operating computers, powered wheelchairs and other assistive technologies after cervical spinal cord injuries. The interface design included a comprehensive training paradigm with a range of diverse functional activities to enhance motor learning and retention. Two groups of SCI survivors and healthy control subjects participated in the study. The results indicate the effectiveness of the developed system as an alternative pathway for individuals with motor disabilities to control assistive devices while engaging in functional motor activity.

Resource quality is an important support for information that will determine a success, it is important to be understand and measurably, so it will be done by data collection, analyzed and prepared for development. This software is part of the E-Mini Hospital in the implementation of telemedicine that have been quite adequate for student activities, but for training activities involving the target hospitals are still required to set the system into a complete and prospective training package. Software development about Information Resources Quality as part of the E-Mini Hospital to complete laboratory facilities of biomedical Technology especially in Medical informatics can provide wider benefits for students as well as the implementation of cooperation with other institutions. Development carried out by phase: making software, inspected, tested ranging from phase I, II, III and IV that can really run; include: lecturers, programmers and students, with a set of implementation. The development is part of the E-Mini Hospital developed software that included Information Resources Quality. Produce Information Resources Quality Software that technically can be used and useful for students and the community in order to evaluate the quality of training information resources, which is a part of the laboratory infrastructure and generate copyright.
