The average grey-levels (AVGL) calculated from B-Mode images were assessed for non-invasive temperature estimation in a porcine kidney sample. The porcine kidney was subjected to heating and cooling procedure with temperature varying from 36℃ to 45℃. The sample was continuously imaged with an ultrasound scanner, and simultaneously temperature was measured at each 5 s using two Type-T thermocouples placed at the central region and at the bottom of the sample. The result shows that AVGL/Temperature relations were highly correlated for both regions, and considering heating and cooling periods. Besides, AVGL/Temperature functions estimated fitting errors inferior to ± 0.25℃, indicating that it might be possible to track temperature changes from both tissues using AVGL. This result is innovative since it suggests that AVGL seems to be robust to estimate non-invasively temperature variations in B-mode images from tissues presenting a complex morphological structure.

3D cell nuclei segmentation from fluorescence microscopy images is a key application in many biological studies. We propose a new, fully automated and non parametric method that takes advantage of the resolution anisotropy in fluorescence microscopy. The cell nuclei are first detected in 2D at each image plane and then tracked over depth through a graph based decision to recover their 3D profiles. As the tracking fails to separate very close cell nuclei along depth, we also propose a corrective step based on an intensity projection criterion. Experimental results on real data demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method.

Cardiorespiratory fitness level correlates inversely with excess post-exercise oxygen consumption after aerobic-type interval training

Background: The purpose of this study was to reveal any association between cardiorespiratory fitness level and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) using three cycling protocols with varying degrees of exercise intensity, i.e., sprint interval training (SIT), high-intensity interval aerobic training (HIAT), and continuous aerobic training (CAT). Findings. Ten healthy men, aged 20 to 31 years, attended a cross-over experiment and completed three exercise sessions: SIT consisting of 7 sets of 30-s cycling at 120% VO₂ with a 15-s rest between sets;HIAT consisting of 3 sets of 3-min cycling at 80∼90% VO₂ with a 2-min active rest at 50% VO₂ between sets;and CAT consisting of 40 min of cycling at 60∼65% VO₂. During each session, resting VO₂, exercise VO₂, and a 180-min post-exercise VO₂ were measured. The net exercise VO ₂ during the SIT, HIAT, and CAT averaged 14.7 ± 1.5, 31.8 ± 4.1, and 71.1 ± 10.0 L, and the EPOCs averaged 6.8 ± 4.0, 4.5 ± 3.3, and 2.9 ± 2.8 L, respectively. The EPOC with SIT was greater than with CAT (P < 0.01) and HIAT (P = 0.12). Correlation coefficients obtained between subjects' VO₂ and the ratio of EPOC to net exercise VO₂ for SIT, HIAT, and CAT were -0.61 (P = 0.06), -0.79 (P < 0.01), and -0.42 (P = 0.23), respectively. Conclusions: Our data suggest that cardiorespiratory fitness level correlates negatively with the magnitude of EPOC, especially when performing aerobic-type interval training. © 2012 Matsuo et al.;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

This presentation describes our experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of three different application specific e-health and telemedicine systems. We aim to predict radiological observations using computationally-derived imaging features extracted from CT images. Our dataset consists of 79 portal venous phase liver CT images containing lesions identified and annotated by a radiologist using a controlled vocabulary of 76 semantic terms. Computationally-derived features were extracted describing intensity, texture, shape, and edge sharpness. Linear discriminative analysis, logistic regression and LASSO were explored to predict the radiological observations using computational features. The approach was evaluated by leave one out cross-validation. Informative radiological observations such as lesion enhancement, hyper vascular attenuation, and homogeneous retention were discovered to be well-predicted by computational features. By exploiting relationships between computable and semantic features, this approach could lead to more accurate and efficient radiology reporting. © 2011 IEEE.

A novel power-line interference(PLI) reduction algorithm is proposed as a pre-processing step for electrocardiogram(ECG) signals. A distinct feature of this proposed algorithm is its ability to detect the presence of PLI in the ECG signal before applying the PLI removal algorithm. A constant-false alarm rate(CFAR) PLI detector using a band-pass IIR notch filter is developed for this purpose. Once the presence of PLI is detected, a recursive least-squares(RLS) adaptive IIR filter then will be applied to eliminate the PLI anomaly. On the other hand, if the PLI is not detected, no PLI reduction filtering will be applied. The proposed intelligent algorithm is able to perform PLI reduction operation without human operator supervision. The proposed RLS adaptive notch filtering algorithm also exhibits fast convergence and numerical stability.

Identifying transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) is crucial for understanding the mechanism of transcriptional regulation. It is known that transcription factors (TFs) often cooperate to regulate genes. While traditional approaches can be used to discover binding motifs of a group of co-regulated genes, they often fail to accurately assign motifs to the corresponding TFs. Here, we consider two TFs together to infer their TFBSs and their synergistic relationship simultaneously. The basic idea is that if two TFs interact, their TFBSs, if distinct, would be conserved across species and coincided in the promoter regions of the genes they co-regulated. Applying our method to Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromatin immunoprecipitation data, we predicted 110 TF pairs with statistically significant motif assignments. A majority of these TF pairs have literature support to be synergistic, and the designated motifs to TFs match well with their known consensus. We further examined the synergism of predicted TF pairs in seven experimental conditions using ANOVA, and identified significant interactions. © 2011 IEEE.
