Thin layers with high conductivity values, such as metal sheets, conductive paint, graphene, and other two-dimensional (2D) materials, are commonly used in various electromagnetic applications. One of the fundamental challenges in numerical modeling of these thin conductive layers is the requirement for an extremely fine mesh that can accurately capture field variations and account for the intricate geometrical features of the structure (H. Chen, A. J. Taylor and N. Yu, Rep. Prog. Phy., 79,10-35,2016). A dense mesh translates into high computational cost since the number of unknowns is increased and the time step size must be reduced for an explicit time marching scheme (to ensure that the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition is satisfied). One can replace the thin conductive layer with an infinitesimally thin sheet on which the resistive boundary condition (RBC) is enforced (T. B. A. Senior and J. L. Volakis, London, UK: IET, 1995). This approach completely avoids the dense mesh and the high computational cost that comes with it. However, RBC has to be incorporated into the electromagnetic solver.

Several recent studies have elucidated why knowledge distillation (KD) improves model performance. However, few have researched the other advantages of KD in addition to its improving model performance. In this study, we have attempted to show that KD enhances the interpretability as well as the accuracy of models. We measured the number of concept detectors identified in network dissection for a quantitative comparison of model interpretability. We attributed the improvement in interpretability to the class-similarity information transferred from the teacher to student models. First, we confirmed the transfer of class-similarity information from the teacher to student model via logit distillation. Then, we analyzed how class-similarity information affects model interpretability in terms of its presence or absence and degree of similarity information. We conducted various quantitative and qualitative experiments and examined the results on different datasets, different KD methods, and according to different measures of interpretability. The Republic of the Philippines is confronted with rebuilding its energy landscape, which now depends heavily on imported fossil fuels for a substantial supply. The Department of Energy (DOE) has established lofty objectives to enhance the nation's renewable energy (RE) capability;nevertheless, these objectives are still to be achieved. This research supports DOE's goals by studying other possible renewable energy sources. In particular, the primary aim of this research is to examine the viability of Offshore Wind Converters (OWCs) and Wave Energy Converters (WECs) as viable sustainable energy options for the Philippines. Ocean wave converters (OWCs) provide inherent benefits in terms of dependability and have widespread societal acceptance. Conversely, wave energy converters (WECs) harness the vast energy potential contained within ocean waves. A comparative evaluation was undertaken to analyze the differences between these two potential renewable energy sources. The assessment concludes that OWCs possess a minor advantage over WECs regarding their economic viability and higher societal acceptability. It recommended that the government adopts a diversified energy portfolio, which may include the incorporation of WECs to effectively navigate the changing dynamics of the energy sector, enhance sustainability, and ensure the long-term security of the nation's energy supply. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a design to improve the robustness of visual SLAM(vSLAM). A processing step of feature-removal is added to the tracking thread of the conventional ORB-SLAM2 algorithm to improve the localization accuracy of a mobile robot in an environment with moving persons. Instance segmentation and motion tracking are intergrated to identify motion state of people in an image. ORB feature points belonging to moving persons are removed for further processing of the vSLAM pipeline. The advantage of this method is that the vSLAM can remove feature points of moving people, while retain those belonging to static people in the environment, which improves the accuracy of robot pose estimation. The improved ORB-SLAM2 algorithm has been implemented in a NVIDIA Xavier embedded system, which is integrated to a mobile robot. In practical robot navigation experiments, the average positioning error of the proposed method is within 4cm for 22.4m travel distance. Compared with conventional ORB-SLAM2, the average accuracy of our vSLAM method improves 97% in a dynamic environment with moving people. © 2023 IEEE.

The diagnosis of faults in grid-connected photovoltaic (GCPV) systems is a challenging task due to their complex nature and the high similarity between faults. To address this issue, we propose a wrapper approach called the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) for feature selection. The main objective of SSA is to extract only the most important features from the raw data and eliminate unnecessary ones to improve the classification accuracy of supervised machine learning (SML) classifiers. Subsequently, the selected features are used to train supervised machine learning (SML) techniques in distinguishing between various operating modes. To evaluate the efficiency of the technique, we used healthy and faulty data from GCPV systems that have been injected with frequent faults, 20 different types of faults were introduced, including line-to-line, line-to-ground, connectivity faults, and those affecting the operation of bay-pass diodes. These faults present diverse conditions, such as simple and multiple faults in the PV arrays and mixed faults in both arrays. The performances of the developed SSA-SML are compared with those using principal component analysis (PCA) and kernel PCA (KPCA) based SML techniques through different criteria (i.e., accuracy, recall, precision, F1 score, and computation time). The experimental findings demonstrated that the proposed diagnosis paradigm outperformed the other techniques and achieved a high diagnostic accuracy (an average accuracy greater than 99%) while significantly reducing computation time. © 2023, The Author(s).

The field of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is experiencing significant growth as it involves the integration of medical devices and systems with the internet and various digital technologies. This study provides a bibliometric analysis of scholarly articles pertaining to the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) during the time frame of 2018 to 2022. The analysis is conducted using data sourced from the Scopus database. A total of 1165 documents were identified and analyzed to gain insights into the current state of research in this field. The analysis includes trends in publication output, top authors and institutions, and key research topics. The results of the analysis indicate a steady increase in publication output on IoMT over the past five years, with the highest number of publications in 2022. The top authors in this field were Mohanty, S.P., Kougianos, E., and Pirbhulal, S., while the top institutions were King Saud University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and University of North Texas. Co-citation analysis revealed that wearable devices, telemedicine, and data analytics were among the key research topics in IoMT. This bibliometric analysis offers useful insights into the present research landscape of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) spanning the years 2018 to 2022. The findings can be beneficial for researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and funding agencies in understanding the trends and priorities in this field. The top authors and institutions identified in this analysis can serve as valuable resources for collaboration and staying updated on the latest developments in IoMT. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Cross-spectral face recognition (CSFR), particularly in the Near Infra-Red (NIR) and visual (VIS) spectrum, presents challenges due to differences in illumination and sensor characteristics. NIR sensors are commonly used in practical applications, such as in nighttime outdoor surveillance systems, due to their ability to capture images in low light conditions and at various standoff distances. This study proposes a simple CSFR method that combines deep learning techniques with photometric normalization using Homomorphic Filtering (HF) to identify subjects in NIR images across different standoff distances. Both NIR and VIS images are filtered to mitigate illumination discrepancies. A deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model is employed to automatically extract discriminative deep features from the normalized images of both spectrums. Four deep CNN models of ResNet-50, DenseNet, EfficientNet, and MobileNetV2 are tested. The performance of the models in feature extraction for CSFR is evaluated on the LDHF (Long Distance Heterogeneous Face) database. The Hamming distance metric is employed to match NIR probe images with VIS gallery images. The experimental findings, expressed in recognition rate RR, demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach in enhancing CSFR accuracy, with MobileNetV2 achieving the highest accuracy of 90% for a short standoff. In addition, HF improves image quality, enhancing the deep learning model's ability to discern image characteristics.

The translation application was developed using Python and Visual Studio Code as the primary programming environment. Technological progress has led to the younger generation forsaking the Batak language in their daily interactions, perceiving it as inconsequential to their social circle and contributing to the decline of regional languages. There is concern that regional languages, namely the Batak language, may lose significance or face extinction if this trend persists. This translation program is being implemented to aid in preserving regional languages, specifically the Batak language, enabling it to conform to contemporary circumstances. The development of this translation engine utilized the Batak language dictionary. The process of designing, coding, and testing is responsible for creating this direct machine translation. The BLEU score is employed to assess the caliber of machine translation. The study's findings indicate that the % BLEU value for ten sentences was 32.3%. This score falls within the category of sentences whose meaning can be understood, but the sentence structure still needs development. The direct machine translation developed in this Web platform is highly proficient and practical. © 2023 IEEE.
