Rainfall forecasting using PSPline and rice production with ocean-atmosphere interaction

The role of climate can be affected by plants. The weather can accelerate and multiply the existence of various plant pests and diseases, accelerate the growth and development of grass among plants, and encourage the emergence of infection and significant damage to plants. The elements of climate that affect the growth of plants are one of them is rainfall. In this paper, we performed the simulation using the non-parametric penalized spline (PSPLINE) method and studied the effect on rice production in Lampung. It can be concluded that the increasing fluctuation, frequency, and intensity of climate anomalies in the last decade caused by the ENSO phenomenon have an impact on changes in distribution patterns, intensity, and period of the wet season so that the start of the rainy season and the dry season becomes too late. As a result, there is a seasonal shift from normal average conditions that can ultimately have severe implications for food crops. In a nutshell penalized spline gives high accuracy with R 2 = 96.227% and MAPE = 1.62%.

Focusing on the quality of education, skills, and employability of our graduates in computing-related fields, this work proposes a cost-effective approach to achieve these goals. The Evaluation and Proficiency Infrastructure, Curricula, and Services (EPICS) extends successful methods in other units on campus in an innovative way as synergistic combination of faculty, Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs), and educational technology using the Canvas Webcourses Learning Management System (LMS) already in use at our college. We integrate computer-based evaluation with a close-knit review and learning cycle based on directed and open tutoring to collectively form the Evaluation and Proficiency Center (EPC). Initial results have been encouraging, as students' test scores and survey results indicate a 43% reduction in D or F grades compared to a section of the same course with the same instructor, using conventional delivery, and overwhelmingly positive responses from students regarding the effectiveness of pedagogical strategies (i.e., Exemplar Vignettes, content tutoring), assessment models (i.e., electronically delivered quizzes, flexible scheduling, use of testing center), and tutoring strategies (i.e., self-paced, exam results review). In this manuscript, the EPICS process, as well as results collected from student performance and perceptions of the initial implementation, will be addressed. © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.

While physical coordinates are useful for IoT and sensor network operations, physical localization is not a viable option for large-scale networks of simple devices in complex or harsh environments. Topology Preserving Maps (TPM) extracted from anchor-based Virtual Coordinates (VCs) are an attractive localization free alternative for physical maps. We present an approach, based on the theory of low-rank matrix completion, to extract TPMs with only partial information about VCs. Evaluation using 2D and 3D networks with random anchors shows that accurate TPMs can be obtained even when up to 40% to 60% of random coordinates are missing. Coordinate generation and communication cost thus may be reduced significantly. TPM generation can now also be based on a different VC system as long as it characterizes each node with distances to a small set of random nodes instead of a global set of anchors.

The paradigm of drug discovery has moved from finding new drugs that exhibit therapeutic properties for a disease to reusing existing approved drugs for a newer disease. The association between a drug and a disease involves a complex network of targets and pathways. In order to provide new insights, there has been a constant need for sophisticated tools that have the potential to discover new associations from the underlying drugs-disease interactions. In addition to computational tools, there has been an explosion of data available in terms of drugs, disease and their activity profiles. On one hand, researchers have been using existing machine learning tools that have shown great promise in predicting associations but on the other hand there has been a void in exploiting advance machine learning frameworks to handle this kind of data integration. In this paper, we propose a learning framework called weighted multi-view learning that is a variant of the Multi-view learning framework in which the views are assumed to contribute equally to the prediction whereas our method learns a weight for each view since we hypothesize that certain views might have better prediction capability than others.

Single cell analysis provides information of individual cells that is lost in measurements of large cell populations. There is a growing demand on the capability of characterizing the properties of individual single cells. Since transient and temporal studies of single cells require continuous monitoring of the cell behaviors, an effective single-cell assay that can support time lapsed studies in a high throughput manner is highly desirable. Currently, most single-cell technology platforms do not provide optimal in vitro micro-environments to sustain cell growth yet allow continuous studies of single cell behaviors based on the quantitative analysis of their molecular marker signals. In this study, we present a highly versatile single-cell assay to accommodate different cellular types and culturing conditions and to allow studies of single cell responses to environmental factors. Our assay is non-invasive and can collect and survey single cell secretions at different time points. It provides a convenient, low-cost, and enabling tool to investigate single cell properties in a high-throughput manner, generating accurate temporal and quantitative information unachievable in other methods.

Collective behavior of active topological solitons, knotted streamlines, and transport of cargo in liquid crystals

Active colloids and liquid crystals are capable of locally converting the macroscopically-supplied energy into directional motion and promise a host of new applications, ranging from drug delivery to cargo transport at the mesoscale. Here we uncover how topological solitons in liquid crystals can locally transform electric energy to translational motion and allow for the transport of cargo along directions dependent on frequency of the applied electric field. By combining polarized optical video microscopy and numerical modeling that reproduces both the equilibrium structures of solitons and their temporal evolution in applied fields, we uncover the physical underpinnings behind this reconfigurable motion and study how it depends on the structure and topology of solitons. We show that, unexpectedly, the directional motion of solitons with and without the cargo arises mainly from the asymmetry in rotational dynamics of molecular ordering in liquid crystal rather than from the asymmetry of fluid flows, as in conventional active soft matter systems. Six of the ten leading causes of death in the United States, including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, can be directly linked to diet. Dietary intake, the process of determining what someone eats during the course of a day, provides valuable insights for mounting intervention programs for prevention of many of the above chronic diseases. Measuring accurate dietary intake is considered to be an open research problem in the nutrition and health fields. In this paper we compare two techniques of estimating food portion size from images of food. The techniques are based on 3D geometric models and depth images. An expectation-maximization based technique is developed to detect the reference plane in depth images, which is essential for portion size estimation using depth images. Our experimental results indicate that volume estimation based on geometric models is more accurate for objects with well-defined 3D shapes compared to estimation using depth images.

Nowadays, the mobility is a growing problem that worries the governments in Latin American countries. In fact, to improve the mobility the transportation planning process and the ITS technologies are key areas, which should work together to give solutions to solve or mitigate the problem. One of the most used tools in transportation planning to face this problem is the origin/destination (O/D) matrix, which is used to estimate the moving of users and future demand on transportation systems. Nevertheless, the current technologies for the generation of traffic data information, the matrix O/D in this case, create a new problem for handle the heterogeneous data especially for the traffic centers, which use these data for traffic management. The novelty of this paper is focused on the design of an exchange information component, which send the O/D matrix information to the traffic centers based on DATEX II approach.

This work purpose is to study the influence of concrete buried structures in grounding systems. Comparison of soil characteristics between dry and rainy seasons and soil electrical behavior was carried out. Simulations in finite element method was performed for tree layer stratified soil and the electrostatic equipotential surfaces were mapped into the region of interest. © 2016 IEEE.
