A technique for calibrating a charge coupled devices (CCD) camera for direct colorimetric comparison between the captured images of the real environment and synthetic images of the simulated environments is presented. The comparison is used to validate lighting algorithms used for computing synthetic images. The calibration model relating the pixel signal to various physical factors is tested using the CCD camera and an integrating sphere uniform light source.
Traditional methods for evaluating the low-Albedo volume rendering integral do not include bounds on the magnitude of approximation error. In this paper, we examine three techniques for solving this integral with erro...

Aliasing artifacts are eliminated from computer generated images of textured polygons by equivalently filtering both the texture and the edges of the polygons. Different filters can be easily compared because the weighting functions that define the shape of the filters are pre-computed and stored in lookup tables. A polygon subdivision algorithm removes the hidden surfaces so that the polygons are rendered sequentially to minimize accessing the texture definition files. An implementation of the texture rendering procedure is described. ACM. All rights reserved.

Engineering and technology schools, departments and students are encouraged to explore a capstone design project option that possesses significant, far-reaching implications for international humanitarian application. An Indianapolis, Indiana-based non-profit organization called the "Institute of Affordable Transportation (IAT)" engages young engineering and technology talent through service-based capstone projects to design and develop a class of transportation known as a Basic Utility Vehicle (BUY). The IAT's mission is to improve living standards and enable economic growth in the Third World by creating a simple vehicte that can be assembled almost anywhere, by almost anyone. To propagate this initiative, the IAT hosts an annual collegiate BUY competition that tests student-designed prototype BUV's. Ultimately, the student efforts from these competitions will help provide mobility, freedom and economic hope to people in rural areas of devebping countries. This paper introduces the organization that is the genesis of this initiative, gives an overview of the first two IAT collegiate competitions (including examples of student-designed and other vehicles), reflects on the academic benefits to participating students and faculty and culminates with an invitation to academic institutions to become involved in this life-changing initiative.
This paper presents a new interactive rendering and display technique for complex scenes with expensive shading, such as global illumination. Our approach combines sparsely sampled shading (points) and analytically co...

The goal of this project was to determine if advanced rendering methods such as global illumination allow more accurate discrimination of shape differences than standard rendering methods such as OpenGL. To address these questions, we conducted two psychophysical experiments to measure observers' sensitivity to shape differences between a physical model and rendered images of the model. Two results stand out: The rendering method used has a significant effect on the ability to discriminate shape. In particular, under the conditions tested, global illumination rendering improves sensitivity to shape differences. Further, viewpoint appears to have an effect on the ability to discriminate shape. In most of the cases studied, sensitivity to small shape variations was poorer when the rendering and model viewpoints were different. The results of this work have important implications for our understanding of human shape perception and for the development of rendering tools for computer-aided design.
