In the delayed match-to-sample task, responses of inferior temporal neurons to adjacent stimuli in the sequence are correlated to each other when the monkey was trained repeatedly with the sequence of visual stimuli, although the monkey was not required to associate the stimuli with each other. This correlation, however, is not observed for a monkey with lesions of the rhinal cortex, which is not consistently explained by existing models of such correlated responses. In the present study, we construct a model consisting of two networks corresponding to area TE and the perirhinal cortex, and show that perirhinal plasticity may underlie the mechanism of implicit association learning.

Service systems' business processes show the existence of mutual interaction between users. Running a particular business subdomain requires the role of each user. This role is in line with the concept contained in blockchain-based smart contracts. However, determining the subdomains that require smart contract coding is challenging in developing business processes that will run on the blockchain. We aim to determine the service-oriented business process (in the case of marketplace service) and the subdomain of the business process that requires smart contract coding. This article is essential because it shows how developing IT services without a smart contract differs from developing IT services with a smart contract. The main differences between developing services that need smart contracts and those that do not are that certain process can be run automatically and the record of activity in blockchain cannot be changed by anyone (tamper-proof). We outlined methods for designing marketplace business processes and defined subdomains to be encoded into smart contract code. After reviewing the three marketplace platforms, we determined eight subdomains of the marketplace business process. Two subdomains require smart contract coding from eight, namely the payment and complaint subdomains. © 2022 IEEE.

Lower Citarum experiences recurring flood that caused by extreme rainfalls. Study of flood models is now needed to anticipate and prepare flood risk management to reduce losses. This study presents the modeling of the Lower Citarum flood flow using 1D-2D flood modeling in HEC-RAS to understand the behavior of floods. A combination of topographic survey and satellite data was used to model the river channel. Fifteen lateral structures were used to couple the 1D and 2D regimes, where the locations of the structure were based on observations. Results showed minor excesses over the lateral structures, which gradually grow into large areas over time. The study identifies locations with a high risk of flooding in the Lower Citarum Zone, which can be used in further studies for academic and practical purposes. The model result has a discrepancy with the observed data. This difference probably occurred due to the different analysis methods between the observed data and flood modeling or the model’s accuracy. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

12-week treadmill exercise program elicits lower energy availability without changes in serum testosterone in male rats

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a treadmill endurance exercise program would reduce serum testosterone and leptin in male rats and assess the impact of increased dietary cholesterol on serum hormones. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley Rats (n = 20) were randomly assigned to a control group (C) or an exercise training group (EX) that performed treadmill running 40 min/day, 6 days/week for 12 weeks. At study midpoint (week 6), rats were randomized to a high-cholesterol (HC) diet (n = 10) or remain on standard semi-purified (LC) diet (n = 10). Results: Results are presented as median [IQR]. At end of week 6, EX + LC had significantly lower body weight (508 [460–527] vs 570 [516–606] g;p = 0.01), mean daily energy intake (76.3 [74.9–82.2] vs 90.9 [86.9–94.5] kcal;p < 0.01), and serum leptin (0.4 [0.3–0.6] vs 3.3 [2.0–4.0] ng/mL;p < 0.01) in comparison to C + LC. No difference was observed between EX + LC and C + LC in serum testosterone (12.6 [6.9–18.3] vs 11.7 [7.6–18.9] ng/mL). At end of week 12, EX + LC had significantly lower body weight (514 [483–568] g) compared to C + LC (644 [575–680] g;p < 0.01) and C + HC (650 [583–702] g;p < 0.01). Serum Leptin in both EX + LC (0.6 [0.2–0.8] ng/mL) and EX + HC (0.6 [0.3–1.6] ng/mL) was significantly lower than C + LC (3.0 [2.2–4.2] ng/mL;p < 0.01). No significant difference in testosterone was observed between C + LC and C + HC (4.3 [3.3–8.3] vs 6.3 [3.2–9.3] ng/mL, respectively). Conclusions: Despite lower energy availability, exercise-induced changes in sex hormones may not occur in training programs ≤ 12 weeks. Lower voluntary energy intake observed in exercise groups despite greater energy expenditure may indicate that lower energy availability in endurance-trained individuals may be inadvertent. © 2018, Springer-Verlag Italia S.r.l., part of Springer Nature.

Biocomposite based on whey protein isolate with the addition silica from rice husk ash

The fabrication of biocomposites studies based on whey protein isolate (WPI) and silica (SiO2) have been conducted. WPI is a biopolymer with high intermolecular bonds and SiO2 can improve the properties of biocomposites. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding SiO2 on the physical and chemical properties of biocomposites. In this work, WPI biocomposite materials containing 0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7% (w/w) SiO2 were prepared by a casting scheme. The results found the increase of SiO2 material, the thickness of the biocomposite material sample increases from 0.178 to 0.205 mm. The water content and solubility in water are enriched under the stimulation of the addition of SiO2 substances, because SiO2 improves adhesiveness of the polymer matrix of the biocomposite. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra revealed that the intermolecular correlation in biocomposite appeared through O-H, C=O, and N-H. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) studies exhibited that the main structure amorph of biocomposite. The thermal characteristic of the biocomposite were raised by adding SiO2 from 137.48 °C to 153.40 °C. The findings revealed, the incoporation of SiO2 effectuated the water content, solubility in water and thermal properties biocomposite based WPI. © 2022

Human kidney organoids derived from embryonic stem cells (ESCs) or induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have become novel tools for studying various kidney pathologies. Here, we transplanted ESC-derived kidney organoids into humanized mice with a mature human adaptive immune system developed through thymic education. As judged by histology and immunophenotyping, the transplanted HLA-mismatched kidney organoids trigged a robust alloimmune response, characterized by a dense immune cell infiltrate and enhanced memory T cell phenotype in the allograft 30 days post-transplantation. Multiplexed immunofluorescence revealed expression of functional markers of various immune cell infiltrates in response to organoid allografts, mimicking the T cell-mediated rejection process in humans. This validated our model as a novel platform to study various therapeutic strategies to control alloimmunity. Splenocytes isolated from organoid-transplanted hosts showed an alloantigen-specific memory response against 2D kidney organoids ex vivo. Overall, our study indicates that transplanting kidney organoids in humanized mice may be a valuable tool for studying human allogeneic immunity. © 2025 International Society of Nephrology

Fresh water is needed in industrial activities. For these needs sea water is usually used as raw material if the plant is near the sea and far from the river. SWD (sea water desalination) is used to process sea water to fresh water, that is by reducing levels of salinity or reducing levels of total dissolved solid (TDS). There are two technologies in SWD, namely thermal distillation and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology. Residual SWD process or also called blowdown water has high salinity levels can be converted into electrical energy through SGP (salinity gradient power). There are two technologies to capture energy from salinity differences, namely PRO (Pressure Retarded Osmosis) and RED (Reverse Electrodialysis). PRO and RED are renewable energy technology, there are no emision, no moving part, abundant availability in nature and can be recycled. In this article, an analysis for SWD of oil refinery is carried out. From the analysis results it is known that the plant uses thermal distillation technology, requires power as 64.25 MW and 3,403 m3/h seawater to produce 242 m3/h freshwater. With SGP, the potential recovery of power gained is 0.786 MW. This recovery potential is still too small when compared to energy requirements of SWD with thermal distillation technology, but if it use RO technology that only requires 3.6-5.7 kWh/m3 or 0.87 - 1.40 MW to produce 242 m3/h, a significant impack to saving energy will be obtained. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Urban traffic congestion presents critical challenges, resulting in delays, environmental pollution, and significant economic costs. While traditional traffic control methods, such as fixed-time and adaptive systems, have been widely implemented, they often fail in unpredictable conditions, particularly when confronted with noisy or inaccurate data. This research proposes a robust reinforcement learning (RL) solution for traffic signal control using the RADIAL-DQN (Robust Adversarial Loss DQN) algorithm. Integrating adversarial training enhances the system's robustness to real-world uncertainties. Evaluations conducted using a SUMO traffic simulation show that the robust agent produced an increase of only 60.71% in queue length under a projected gradient descent (PGD) adversarial attack, outperforming standard RL agents, which experienced an 89% increase. These results demonstrate the potential of robust RL to improve both the reliability and scalability of urban traffic control systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Over two thousand mud volcanoes have been documented worldwide, predominantly forming in geologically active regions characterized by rapid sedimentation, recent magmatic activity, and compressional tectonics. These features originate from gravitative instability and fluid overpressure, which induce hydrofracturing of impermeable strata, allowing the release of water, gas, and sediments to the surface. As a result, mud volcanoes occur across a range of tectonic and sedimentary settings, including active margins, accretionary complexes, thrust belts, and deep sedimentary basins. They are generally classified as either submarine or terrestrial mud volcanoes, with the former typically associated with tectonic deformation and the later with sediment accumulation in continental settings. Beyond their geological significance, mud volcanoes contribute substantially to global geochemical and biogeochemical processes, influencing methane production and consumption, nutrient cycling, and organic matter transformation. Additionally, microbial communities are essential in the formation and maintenance of mud volcano structures by contributing to the biomineralization of carbonates and sulfates. The microbial communities found in different mud volcanoes are diverse, and their composition can vary based on location, depth, and geochemical conditions. Moreover, these microbial communities have evolved to utilize diverse sources of energy, including hydrogen, methane, and sulfur, to facilitate metabolic processes. This review summarizes the current insights into the formation, distribution, and environmental constraints of mud volcanoes, while highlighting the ecological relevance and metabolic capabilities of associated microbial communities based on metagenomics data to support interdisciplinary research into geobiological interactions in extreme ecosystems. © 2025

Abundant potential of renewable energy(RE)in Indonesia is predicted to replace conventional energy which continues to experience depletion year by ***,until now,the use of RE has only reached 2%of the existing potential of 441.7 *** main overview of this work is to investigate the availability of RE that can be utilized for electricity generation in *** energy demand and targets in the long run during the 2017-2050 period are also ***,government policies in supporting RE development are considered in this *** results show that the potential of RE in Indonesia can be utilized and might replace conventional energy for *** use of RE for electricity generation can be achieved by employing a government policy that supports the investor as the executor of RE *** selling price of electricity generated from RE is cheaper than electricity generated from fossils;this makes economy is more affordable for ***,the target set by the government for utilizing RE as the main energy in Indonesia can be done by implementing several policies for the RE ***,greenhouse gas emissions and the use of petroleum fuels can be reduced.
