We have fabricated a PCA (principal component analysis learning network in a FPGA (field programmable gate array) by using an asynchronous PDM (pulse density modulation) digital circuit. The generalized Hebbian algorithm is expressed in a set of ordinary differential equations and the circuits solve them in a fully parallel and continuous manner. The performance of the circuits was tested by a network with two microphone inputs and two speaker outputs. By moving a sound source right and left in front of the microphones, the first principal weight vector could continuously track the sound direction in real time.

An observation method for mathematical graphology is proposed. The motivation of mathematical graphology is to realize graphological information processing on a machine. Furthermore, mathematical graphology aims to construct a new information theory for visual communication. In order to construct the mathematical model this paper focuses on the observation process, which is the first stage in the model. Based on the physiological saccade phenomena, feature points are extracted which include the important information. Then, contours between adjacent feature points are approximated using smooth functions. The performance of the proposed method is verified by experiments.

A novel one-dimensional pattern-matching neural network which matches an input to multiple candidates of the stored templates in parallel is proposed. It can find the best matching template, whose features are arranged in the same order as those of the input, regardless of positional differences between corresponding features. The proposed network is applied to handwritten numerical character recognition. Six kinds of features are extracted form the input pattern: closure, upward, downward, left and right orientations of line ends, and junction. From the two-dimensional feature distribution pattern, horizontal and vertical projection profiles are made. They are matched in the horizontal and vertical matching networks separately. The results of matching in the two networks are combined and categorized by a recognition network. 600 handwritten characters in the ETL-1 database were used as a learning set, and another 600 characters were used as an open set. The recognition rate for the learning set was 98.2% and that for the open set was 88.2%

We address mobility management for the internet protocol version 6 in mobile networks, namely mobile IPv6 (MIPv6). To correctly transfer IPv6 packets to a mobile node (MN), the MN has to update its binding to the home network while roaming away from its home network. Mobile IP networks suffer high binding update traffic from high rates of handoffs and long packet delivery delay from the large distance to the home network. In this paper, we introduce a dynamic and distributed domain-based mobility management protocol for MIPv6 to reduce the binding update and packet delivery delay and traffic. We describe the basic protocol operations and examine the performance improvement of our mobility management over the previous mobile IP mobility management method by using simulations. We show that the dynamic approach provides the optimal mobility solution for MIPv6 and the distributed approach can decentralize the network load.

A method that generates a static network for a dedicated parallel computer from an application program is proposed. The article describes the heuristic code scheduling algorithm that becomes necessary for the generation of the network. Furthermore, it describes the method of dependency analysis that becomes necessary for the insertion of the data transfer instruction and network generation. A network generation system was developed by this research based on the above algorithm. A parallel computer simulator was developed, and the performance of the generated network and the parallelized program was estimated. It achieved 87.0-94.5% parallel processing efficiency with 32 processors when an experiment was made by using some sample programs. The validity of the generated network and the parallelized program is shown with these results.

Devices and systems that interact with the brain have become a growing field of research and development in recent years. engineering students are well positioned to contribute to both hardware development and signal analysis techniques in this field. However, this area has been left out of most engineering curricula. We developed an electroencephalography (EEG) based brain computer interface (BCI) laboratory course to educate students through hands-on experiments. The course is offered jointly by the Biomedical engineering, Electrical engineering, and Computer Science Departments of Columbia University in the City of New York and is open to senior undergraduate and graduate students. The course provides an effective introduction to the experimental design, neuroscience concepts, data analysis techniques, and technical skills required in the field of BCI.
