Hybrid engineering on permeable groins to reduce the longshore current

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of hybrid engineering technology to be applied to the groin to reduce longshore currents. The application of hybrid engineering as a breakwater and sediment trap in coastal areas has given good results so that it can be developed in permeable groin structures. The research method used is laboratory experimental with physical modeling to make prototypes and conduct tests on the wave flume to determine changes in current velocity against the existence of a hybrid engineering structure with several model scenarios by changing the characteristics of brushwood groin such as length and distance between groin to surface height. water. The expected result of this study is an engineering model of the permeable groin that can function as an efficient and effective hybrid engineering in reducing longshore currents.

Water quality indices (WQI) using STORET method has been used to assess rainwater quality in the Bandung urban regions, based on monitoring data at three locations (Coblong, Sumur Bandung, and Buah Batu). Rainwater samples were analyzed by detecting pH, SO42-, NO3-, Cl-, and heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Zn) compared with Indonesian Government Regulation No. 82 Year 2001. Rainwater quality showed polluted based on the parameters of the water quality indices analysis using the Class I and Class II criteria. Rainwater quality in Bandung urban region were lightly polluted (Coblong) and moderately polluted (Sumur Bandung and Buah Batu). Rainwater can potentially become a water sources alternative for domestic use and urban farming in Bandung urban region, but it requires further treatment for better quality. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Evaluating decarbonization technologies and optimizing pathways in ceramic tile production through life cycle assessment in Latin America

This study evaluates decarbonization technologies and optimizes pathways for the ceramic tile industry in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico using a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. These countries were chosen for their key roles in the Latin American ceramic tile market and diverse production contexts, providing insights into decarbonization strategies. We constructed a carbon emissions accounting model to analyze energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across production processes, focusing on renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, material consumption reduction, and process optimization. In Brazil, emission intensity is forecast to decrease from 5.07 kg CO 2 eq/m 2 in 2022 to 4.07 kg CO 2 eq/m 2 by 2030 through integrating biomass, solar panels, and implementing heat recovery systems. Mexico's focus on solar and wind energy, along with process optimizations, is projected to reduce emissions from 6 kg CO 2 eq/m 2 in 2022 to 5.45 kg CO 2 eq/m 2 by 2030. However, Colombia's emissions are forecast to increase from 4.13 kg CO 2 eq/m 2 in 2022 to 4.46 kg CO 2 eq/m 2 by 2030 without additional measures. To address this, we propose scaling up renewable energy installations, adopting advanced energy management systems, and integrating more recycled materials. Our findings suggest that with sustained efforts and strategic implementation of advanced technologies, the ceramic tile industry in these countries can significantly reduce their carbon footprint, supporting their commitments under the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The proposed strategies mitigate environmental impacts and enhance the overall sustainability and competitiveness of the industry. This study underscores the critical role of policy support and industry innovation in achieving substantial decarbonization in the ceramic tile sector.

The effect of ozone exposure to extend the shelf life of carrots (Daucus carrota L.) against vitamin C levels and hardness

Agricultural production is influenced by the handling of post-harvest agricultural products. The handling should prevent factors that can lead to a decrease in the quality of agricultural products. Ozone exposure is done to find out the most effective shelf life of carrots. The sample consisted of 3 groups, namely the control group without ozone treatment (T0), the ozone exposure group through air/spray (T1), the ozone exposure group through immersion in water/soak (T2) and the spray and soak combination group (T3). Ozone exposure time is given for 10 minutes in a closed container, further observed organoleptic changes, pH, hardness and vitamin C levels contained in carrots after 1-5 days of storage. The research results showed that ozone treatment with various methods resulted in significant differences (p=0) in mass loss, pH and hardness of carrots. Ozone treatment with spray and soak on day 1-5 resulted in the stability of mass loss, pH and hardness when compared to other treatment methods. The effect of ozone exposure on carrots by spray and soak can extend shelf life with the smallest percentage decrease based on the results of organoleptic tests, mass loss (58%), hardness (35%) and pH (22%) on the 5th day. So ozone treatment is able to extend the shelf life of carrots based on their organoleptic and physical parameters.

Underwater high-precision positioning is the basis of safe sailing and smooth operation for underwater autonomous vehicle (AUV). With the continuous expansion of marine surveys, the requirements for navigation accuracy of AUVs are also increasing. As the unscented Kalman filter (UKF)-based terrain matching method can meet the high-precision positioning demand of underwater navigation, it becomes one of the hot research content in recent years. However, due to the insufficient robustness of UKF algorithm, under the condition of non-additive state noise, the initial distribution of Sigma points is prone to be unreasonable, which will reduce filter accuracy and even cause the recursive result divergence. In order to improve the accuracy and robustness of the underwater terrain matching algorithm, this paper introduces the method of nonlinear filtering state expansion. The system noise and measurement noise information are added into the system state matrix and the variance matrix, and obtains the state expansion UKF-based terrain matching algorithm. Since the noise and the estimation parameters are both participating in the filtering operation, the inaccurate prediction influence of initial noise can be reduced, and finally improves the accuracy and applicability of the underwater terrain matching algorithm. © 2019 IEEE.

The widespread use of synthetic plastics causes environmental issues because of their nondegradability. In this study, biocomposite from Kluwih seed starch were incorporated with carrageenan and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) to improve their mechanical properties. CNFs were prepared using the TEMPO method with ultrasonication. The variables included starch (1, 1.5, 2 g), carrageenan (3, 4.5, 6 g), and CNF (0.006, 0.12, 0.18 g). The mechanical properties of the biocomposite were optimized using RSM. Zeta potential analysis confirmed the stability of CNFs, and XRD and FTIR analyses revealed improved crystallinity and functional groups. The tensile strength of the biocomposites was 12.08 kgf/mm², which is suitable for sustainable packaging applications. © 2025

Structure and functional group of CuO nanoparticle-reinforced osmosis membrane based on bacterial cellulose from Sargassum sp. extract

Osmosis membranes have been widely used in industries for water purification, wastewater treatment, and biomedical applications. However, the current membranes still have some drawbacks, such as water flow resistance and vulnerability to fouling. Therefore, the development of more efficient and durable osmosis membranes is highly necessary. In this research, the researchers used bacterial nanocellulose extracted from Sargassum sp. as a material for producing more efficient osmosis membranes. The methods used in this study were experiments with two treatments: (1) control, and (2) Bacterial cellulose with a concentration of 1.0 wt% CuO nanoparticles. The nanocellulose was produced using a high-pressure homogenizer, followed by the synthesis of acetate nanocellulose and characterization of the nanocomposite membrane functionalized with CuO nanoparticles. The membranes were characterized using FTIR and XRD analysis. Bacterial cellulose from seaweed was successfully formed with a thickness of 1-3 cm. The results of the characterization analysis showed that the formed bacterial cellulose belonged to Cellulose type I with a crystalline degree ranging from 88.7% to 85.7%. The dry osmosis membranes were analyzed based on their functional groups using FTIR. The analysis revealed changes in transmittance at the peaks of O-H at wavenumbers 3122-3414 and Cu-O at wavenumber 424-673, resulting from the addition of CuO nanoparticles and causing changes in the value of the O-H bond in bacterial cellulose.

Background aims: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are recognized as a potential cell-based therapy for regenerative medicine. Short-term inflammatory cytokine pre-stimulation (cytokine priming) is a promising approach to enhance regenerative efficacy of MSCs. However, it is unclear whether their intrinsic heterogenic nature causes an unequal response to cytokine priming, which might blunt the accessibility of clinical applications. Methods: In this study, by analyzing the single-cell transcriptomic landscape of human bone marrow MSCs from a naïve to cytokine-primed state, we elucidated the potential mechanism of superior therapeutic potential in cytokine-primed MSCs. Results: We found that cytokine-primed MSCs had a distinct transcriptome landscape. Although substantial heterogeneity was identified within the population in both naïve and primed states, cytokine priming enhanced the several characteristics of MSCs associated with therapeutic efficacy irrespective of heterogeneity. After cytokine-priming, all sub-clusters of MSCs possessed high levels of immunoregulatory molecules, trophic factors, stemness-related genes, anti-apoptosis markers and low levels of multi-lineage and senescence signatures, which are critical for their therapeutic potency. Conclusions: In conclusion, our results provide new insights into MSC heterogeneity under cytokine stimulation and suggest that cytokine priming reprogrammed MSCs independent of heterogeneity. © 2023 International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy

Kampung Batik Semarang is a common name of a specific yet traditional urban settlement located in northern city center of Semarang because of its leading economic in batik making. It has a strong root of resiliency based on its history in recovering the community's economic and neighbourhood. The aim of this study is to identify the resiliency of kampong batik after certain disaster in the past and the rise and fall of its development. The study is using qualitative approach and descriptive analysis to get depth discussion of efforts of stakeholders and the development of the settlement that leads to the sustainability of this kampong. The result shows that the sustainability of Batik Kampong is related to three factors; there are the historical background, spatial location of the kampung, and the efforts of local government and the community.

Lithium adsorption behaviour from Ciseeng geothermal brine water onto Amberlite resin

Lithium extraction from geothermal brines has recently become a strong interest due to the large volume of lithium resources in over 2000 geothermal wells and hot springs worldwide. This article discusses the adsorption behavior of lithium contained in local geothermal brine water originating from the Ciseeng geothermal field in Bogor Regency, West Java Province of Indonesia, by Amberlite IR-120 Na resin. The lithium uptake and the selectivity of lithium adsorption by Amberlite IR 120 Na resin towards alkaline and alkaline earth elements contained in the geothermal brine samples, the equilibrium behavior, and adsorption kinetics were studied. The experimental results show that lithium adsorption increased by the increase in contact time of brine water and Amberlite IR 120 in 4-day continuous adsorption and reached a maximum level at day-3 to 0.0356 mmol/g Li. Li adsorption decreased after day-3, indicating that the Li adsorption had reached an equilibrium state at day-3. The highest adsorption recovery during 4-day continuous adsorption is exhibited by K, followed by Li, Na, Ca, and Mg. Considering a low adsorption percentage of Li (maximum 36.6%) but still higher than that of Ca, Mg, and Na, the adsorption parameters are still to be improved. Linear fitting of the experimental data on the four different isotherm adsorption models indicated that the lithium adsorption from Ciseeng brine fit mostly with Freundlich and Temkin model with an adsorption capacity of the Amberlite IR 120 of 0.051 mg/g. Based on the linear fitting procedure of the experimental data to four different kinetics models, the lithium adsorption from Ciseeng brine onto Amberlite resin follows the Elovich kinetic model (R2 = 0.986), which indicates the dominant chemisorption mechanism in the lithium adsorption process.
