The water content is the amount of water contained in the medium – in this case, soil. The water contained in the soil represents soil condition, from the surface down to the ground. The surface position of the land to the groundwater table is referred to as the vadose zone, while the region below the groundwater level is called the saturated soil zone. The capillary fringe is a transitional zone between the vadose zone and the saturated soil zone. The unsaturated zone is defined as the part of the vadose zone between the ground surface and the capillary fringe. Distribution of water content in the soil is closely related to infiltration and consolidation processes. Infiltration is the process of water flow from the surface into the ground, while consolidation is the process of water dissipation from the soil pore medium due to the loading that causing a decline in volume or the soil pore cavity. Infiltration and consolidation are closely related to the compositional changes in water and air content of the soil. Groundwater scientific developments, in terms of engineering, science and technology, have been impactful. This research involves the investigation of a correlation between the distribution of water content and unsaturated consolidation and is expected to offer new insights in groundwater science.

Digital display generally uses special lighting that produces different luminance from conventional displays. This study examined the complex effects of varying learning media (whiteboard, glassboard, projector, and smart television [TV]) in various daylight settings — window position (rear and side windows) and opening area (interior window-to-wall ratio [iWWR] value: 9 %, 47 %, and 85 %) controlled by blackout roller blinds — to produce visual clarity (VCl), which was assessed objectively (accuracy) and subjectively (perception). Based on the optical characteristics, three groups of learning media were created: non-lit devices (whiteboard and glassboard), reflected-lit devices (projector), and self-lit devices (smart TV). The results showed that coordinating daylight settings and learning media can optimise the VCl. A 10 % increase in iWWR value increases 2 % accuracy and 3 % VCl perception for non-lit but decreases 0.2 % accuracy for luminous learning media (reflected-lit and self-lit devices) — the VCl perception of those devices peaks at a 2 % increase when the curtains are half open. This study proposes a spatial VCl index formed by the sufficient scores of accuracy and perceived clarity across the room. For spatial VCl optimisation on non-lit devices, the side window and 81 % iWWR were proposed, and 81 % sVCl was achieved. By contrast, a rear window and a 60–64 % iWWR are recommended when using luminous learning media, and 91 % sVCl for reflected- and 100 % sVCl for self-lit devices were achieved. This study developed practical guidelines by providing white luminance thresholds for media displays, offering adaptable solutions for diverse classroom settings and learning media. © 2025

The bone defect is common in the orthopedic clinic, possibly due to trauma, tumor, or congenital diseases. Also, some patients with alveolar bone defects in the dental clinic result from the different proliferation speeds between soft and hard tissue. Biomaterials made of polymers and bioceramics have been developed to deal with these problems but mixing them directly can result in a low-mechanical strength complex. To solve this, we used oleic acid (C18) as a surfactant to improve the dispersity of hydroxyapatite (HA) in the polycaprolactone (PCL) matrix, and then immerse the material in a simulated biomineralization process. The results showed that the low crystallinity PCL formed an evenly distributed mineralized layer that had phosphate ions signal and a hydroxyapatite peak. The biocompatibility of the material was assessed using MC3T3 cells, and found that the PCL-HA membrane and PCL-C18-HA membranes had significant cell filopodia and lamellipodia. Additionally, the polycaprolactone/oleic acid/hydroxyapatite (PCL-C18-HA) membrane had the highest cell viability among all groups. The addition of C18 also decreased the platelets activation degree but had a significant difference in the reactive oxygen species (ROS) amount compared to the control, which requires further investigation. Overall, this study successfully fabricated a safe and promising polycaprolactone/hydroxyapatite/oleic acid nanocomposite membrane as a potential solution for bone biomaterials. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

This research discusses seismic detailing for column-beam connections based on the special moment-hoe frame system (SPRMK) stipulated in the concrete regulations of SNI 2847:2019. Exterior-type column-beam connections with beam sizes of 200 mm × 300 mm and column sizes of 300 mm × 300 mm. The beam span is 1450 mm and the column height is 2850 mm. The reinforcement used in the beam diameter D13 as much as 6 pieces with a barge diameter of 8 mm. In the column, the main reinforcement diameter is D16 as much as 8 pieces with a barge reinforcement diameter of 8 mm with a distance of 75 mm. The detailing provisions are based on SNI 2847:2019 specifically in article 18.6, article 18.7, and article 18.8. Based on this provision obtained for detailing the connection of the column including blocks, columns, and joints meet the requirements specified in SNI 2847:2019.

Piezoelectricity comes as a principle of transformation of mechanical energy into electrical energy, it is limited in terms of investment, time and research, due to this fact, the need arises to be able to innovate with data collection on the most used models to collect and generate electrical energy. In this research, the literature regarding the generation and collection of electrical energy using piezoelectric materials was analyzed, from this analysis, fifty innovative articles were determined in the last three years, which were reflected in a data matrix, in which It presents the generation and collection element, the applications, and shows the performance in terms of power or voltage that the prototypes supply. With the results of the table, a condensed panorama of current data is obtained, about the most used and outstanding of this form of little-used energy, but which is a competent and efficient alternative for the generation of electricity.

Continuous exposure to an area with a sound above the threshold level is one of the triggers for noise pollution in public spaces. Public spaces are spaces where people of all ages gather for leisure activities, recreation, etc. The purpose of this study was to find the average dBA value of noise, community perceptions regarding the comfort of sound in coastal public spaces, and the relationship between the dBA value and the existing sound comfort standards. The focus of this research is to contribute to a public space that is free from noise pollution. The study was conducted on the coast of Manado, precisely in the Boboca monument area, using mixed methods through the formula LAeq 10 minutes and Leq daylight to get the standard value of noise. The results found noise numbers in the range 77.4 – 80.2 dBA, this value has exceeded the required standard of 50 dBA, and the results of the perception are also supportive, which is dominant in public perception. It means that coastal public spaces in the Boboca monument area have been exposed to noise pollution.

This study is intended to increase the compressive strength and durability of subgrade with lime, on high plasticity expansive soil. The composition of the stabilizing agent used;composition-1 is soil + 5% slakelime, composition-2 is soil + 5% quicklime, and composition-3 is soil + 5% (quicklime with rosin and iron oxide activation). The testing includes swelling test, durability test, and CBR test. That the performance of stabilization with the composition-3 was able to reduce the swelling potential on 3th day by 93.89%, decrease the volume increase potential by 93.09% and decrease the weight increase potential by 94.00% in the 3 periods of wet-dry cycle, and increase the CBR value by 758.62%. That the activation of gum rosin and iron oxide on quicklime can significantly improve the performance of lime for stabilization of expansive clay as subgrade of highway. © 2018 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

Objective. Multimodal neuroimaging approaches are beneficial to discover brain functionalities at high spatial and temporal resolution. In our work, a novel material composition of a microECoG device relying on Parylene HT and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) is presented, which facilitates two-photon imaging of Ca2+ signals and concurrent recording of cortical EEG. Approach. Long-term stability of the interfaces of the transparent microdevice is confirmed in vitro by electrochemical and mechanical tests. The outstanding optical properties, like high transmittance and low auto-fluorescent are proven by fluorimetric measurements. Spatial resolution of fluorescent two-photon imaging through the microECoG device is presented in transgenic hippocampal slices, while concurrent recording of Ca2+ signals and cortical EEG is demonstrated in vivo. Photoartefacts and photodegradation of the materials are also investigated in detail to provide safety guidelines for further use in two-photon in vivo imaging schemes. Main results. Two-photon imaging of Ca signals can be safely performed through the proposed transparent ECoG device, without significant distortion in the dimensions of detected neuronal structures or in the temporal signaling. In chronic use, we demonstrated that fluorescent Ca signals of individual neurons can be clearly recorded even after 51 d. Significance. Our results give a firm indication that highly transparent microECoG electrode arrays made of Parylene HT/ITO/Parylene HT multilayer are excellent candidates for synergetic recording of optical signals and EEG from intact brains with high resolution and are free of electrical and optical artefacts. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Sensors and measurement systems have a key position in the production process in industrial 4.0. To optimize the quality of the production of workpieces that have complex surfaces, such as molds, dies, turbine blades, and others, it is necessary to develop machine tool metrology and machining strategies. So far, dynamic contouring especially trajectory has not been considered important, because they are still considered related to the feed motion. In this paper, an investigation of the trajectory errors of the servo feed drive system of the machine tool is carried out using an artifact and an optical scanning measurement system using a laser displacement sensor. The artifact is mounted on a machine tools table to realize the trajectory errors investigation of the feed motion. The laser displacement sensor can scan the surface of an artifact with sub-micron motion accuracy. To evaluate the measurement accuracy of servo feed motion, experiments to investigate trajectory errors were conducted, and the measurement system of the precision artifact is carried out by using the laser displacement sensor.

Macular pigments produced from microalga Chlorella sp. and applied to alleviate the pathogenic process in diabetic mice

Macular pigments (MP), which consist of lutein and zeaxanthin, have antioxidant capabilities and are widely used in eye healthcare. However, few studies have focused on the protective mechanisms of MP against diabetes mellitus. In addition, the advantages of MP produced by microalgae include non-competition with grains for land, year-round harvesting, and rapid growth. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the MP produced and extracted from the microalga Chlorella sp. AT1 and assess its impact on mitigating retinopathy and atherosclerotic damage in diabetic apolipoprotein E -deficient mice (ApoE −/− ) subjected to high-fat diet and streptozotocin treatment. The results showed that the major components of MP were lutein and zeaxanthin in a 5:1 ratio. MP supplementation significantly reduced glucose tolerance and insulin resistance by 25 and 41 %, respectively, in comparison to the diabetic group. MP supplementation resulted in the moderation of various inflammatory cytokines and lowered the serum levels of disease markers in comparison to the control group. In addition, the expression levels of cellular antioxidant enzymes were significantly elevated, aligning with a reduction in lipid peroxidation after MP supplementation, in comparison to the diabetic group. Pathological changes in the outer nuclear layer and aortic plaques in diabetic ApoE −/− mice were significantly alleviated by MP supplementation. In summary, microalgal MP alleviated the symptoms of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the diabetic ApoE −/− mice. Consequently, MP holds the potential to serve as a beneficial ingredient in healthy food, contributing to biological efficacy by scavenging free radicals and stabilizing blood glucose levels.
