The existence of microplastic in Asian green mussels

Due to resistance of polymer as basic properties of plastic, several studies have been conducted to understand the fate of plastic debris in the marine environment. Degradation is the most important process to control distribution of plastic debris a long the marine environment until the existence of plastic in the food chain. The physical and chemical changes of plastic because of degradation process will lead to the release of polluted substances which eventually more toxic for the environment. Furthermore, when plastic degraded become a microplastic will lead to easy ingested by biotic such as mussell which commonly consumed by humans. The aim of this research was to investigate the concentration of microplastic adsorbed and ingested by mussels considering characteristic of sea water. About 30 samples have been collected from 3 different locations that is brackish water (31 ppb), high salinity (36 ppb) and low salinity (33 ppb) for measuring a number of microplastic in mussels on three different salinity. The result of microstructure analysis by microscope showed that mussel evaluated from the marine environment contaminated by microplastic with average size of 211.163 μm. In high salinity sea water, microplastic found in mussel was greater than low salinity and brackish water. The SEM/EDX analysis showed the presence of SIO2 0.14 % (w/w), Na2O 24.27 %(w/w) and Al2O3 0.27 % (w/w) in the microplastic obtained in the mussel indicating the components which are mostly found in the plastic industries. The amount of microplastic in mussell could be used as pollution indicator in the marine environmental by plastic waste.

In this research, the transient characteristics of a new type fuel metering system for aircraft turbofan engines using two types of pumps, a gear pump and a centrifugal pump, were studied by modelling and simulation. This new fuel metering system is capable of hydraulically unloading the operating state of each pump by the pump mode switching mechanism within the permissible range of the pump rotation speed and the fuel flow rate and it is possible to reduce the fuel temperature rise due to the pressure loss in the circuit in the operation region of the entire fuel system. In addition to this, by using a small centrifugal pump that can realize high discharge flow rate, it is possible to reduce weight compared to the conventional fuel system. However, when the pump mode is switched, unexpected fluctuation in the fuel flow rate can occur when a large change in the inlet pressure of the system occurs, the pressure control unit cannot follow the change, and the transient phenomenon cannot be suppressed. At this time, the pressure waveform generated at the time of changing the pump mode includes a high frequency component such that the pressure control unit, which plays a role of keeping the metering valve differential pressure constant, cannot follow up. Therefore, in this paper, we focused on the frequency of the pressure change waveform when the pump mode was changed and studied the model of the fuel system inlet pressure in the gear pump mode. Based on that model, we propose a method to reduce the frequency characteristics of the pressure change occurring at the time of pump mode change.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is classified as neurological disorder that affects motor and sensory function below the injury level. Studies show that application of low-intensity electrical stimulation (LIES) to neural tissue increases neurochemical factors responsible for regeneration as nerve growth factor. Stem cell (SC) therapy for patients with SCI can result in the replacement of injured neurons after trauma. The electromechanical delay (EMD) is defined as time elapsed between the onset of muscle electrical activation and onset of force production. A dog diagnosed with incomplete thoracolumbar SCI followed by disc hernia between the vertebral segments LI and L2, was evaluated by electromyography and mechanomyography after surgical decompression procedure, one SC transplantation and LIES. We observed motor response and decrease in the EMD from 8.25ms to 5.75ms after the procedures. The wavelet decomposition of EMG signals showed reestablishment of vastus lateralis muscle activity 30 days after the procedure. In addition, the EMG RMS increased from 3.3 µV RMS to 157 µV RMS . The preliminary results of this case report indicate positive effects of the hybrid therapy involving stem cells and low-intensity electrical stimulation after surgical decompression.

This article deals with the discussion on the recent status of oil palm biomass utilization as an energy source and its possibility use for polygeneration system. The discussion focused only on the energy viewpoint. At this point, many projects and research have been developed in order to utilize the oil palm biomass to meet the energy demand of industries and communities, especially in the largest producing countries: Indonesia and Malaysia; and a few in Thailand, Africa, Latin America and Europe. Through the simulation work in the case study, it is evident that the government of Langsa City can fulfill the fresh water to their community and electricity to Langsa Harbor only by using EFB and PKS from one POM with the generated power of 12 MW, while the desalination plant consumes about 7 MW of electricity. If all potency of biomass from all POMs in Aceh Timur and Aceh Tamiang, without the combination of other primary energy sources is used, Langsa City might earn surplus of energy. The use of the oil palm biomass for polygeneration scenarios is possible and feasible from the technical point of view.

Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.

The effect of temperature changes on mechanistic performance of hotmix asphalt as wearing course with different gradation types

The performance of hot mix asphalt serves as wearing course with different aggregate gradation types, namely dense graded and gap graded, is empirically determined using Marshall test. Based on data bitumen penetration, bitumen softening point, volume of bitumen, volume of aggregate and volume of voids, the mechanistic performance of bitumen (for example : bitumen stiffness) and hot mix asphalt (such as asphalt mix stiffness and fatigue life asphalt mix) in relation with temperature changes can be predicted. This mechanistic performance of hot mix asphalt are solved by Shell nomograph that can be simulated by software BANDS 2.0. The mixture consists of Asphalt Concrete-Wearing Course (AC-WC) and Hot Rolled Sheet-Wearing Course (HRS-WC) by considering their different gradations, in addition to its widely using as wearing course in Indonesia. The study was initiated by testing bitumen and asphalt mixture materials, including asphalt penetration 60/70 according to Bina Marga (2010) specification of coarse aggregate and fine aggregate. Subsequently, preparation of gradation mixture for AC-WC and HRS-WC based on Bina Marga (2010) was carried out, followed by Marshall Test with five variations of bitumen content on each asphalt mixture to determine optimum bitumen content. Based on the result of optimum bitumen content, specimens were made to determine the Marshall properties of the two diverse gradation asphalt mixtures using Marshall Test. Furthermore, by using data bitumen penetration, bitumen softening point and Marshall test, i.e. volume of bitumen, volume of aggregate and volume of voids, the mechanistic performance of hot mix asphalt was measured. It indicated the difference of Marshall properties between the dense graded and gap graded mixture. The first asphalt mixture has greater stability, VFWA (Void Filled With Asphalt) and MQ (Marshall Quotient) in compared with the second mixture. API Class-G Portland cement commonly put in as zonal isolation material in oil and/or gas well. Corrosion against the well zonal isolation material could lead to potential leakage of formation fluid such oil, gas, or water. It is widely known that ordinary Portland cement is thermodinamically unstable in CO2 rich environment, which can be found in the CO2 geological sequestration. CO2 attack on API Class-G cement had been observed through experiments that simulate the down hole condition of Geological Sequestration of CO2. Some of the experiment reveal the detrimental effect of CO2 such as increase of porosity and permeability of cement sheath corroded by CO2 attack. The degradation of API Class-G cement by CO2 involves emergence and crystallization of CaCO3 from Ca(OH)2 which is formed during hydration of cement. In this experiment, we examine the role of addition of MgO swelling cement by weight fraction to mitigate the corrosion caused by CO2 against downhole hardened API Class-G cement thus inhibits the occurrence of leakage path of CO2. Observation for characterization and analysis by XRD, optical microscope, and cement paste uniaxial volumetric expansion presented in this paper. The conclusion will provide insights into design of carbonation resistant cement slurries using swelling cements admixtures.

Preliminary study of natural zeolite from Bayah for solar powered cooling application

This paper presents the first attempt to investigate of natural zeolite for cooling adsorption application. Representative samples were collected from Bayah-Banten, Indonesia. As known that zeolites can be used as an adsorbent. Unfortunately, natural zeolite has many limitation, among them contains a lot of impurities. To improve the characteristic of natural zeolite, activation and modification should be conducted beforehand. Activation was conducted by reducing grain size (1-2mm), washed by aquadest and heated using microwave. While the chemical activation is done through acidification by adding HCl solution. Finally, the activated natural zeolite was calcined gradually initiated at room temperature to 150°C for 2 hours and then heating continued from 150°C to 300°C for 4 hours. The final zeolite activated product was characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The result showed that the morphology of the natural zeolte was cubic shave as observed by TEM and the surface area of activated natural zeolite is geater than the raw material.

East Jakarta icon as a buffer and the lungs of the city is still a big dream of Jakarta. It is a classic problem that there is a struggle for land between current economic interests and sustainable environmental interests for the future. This paper discusses the development of urban forest area of Halim Perdana Kusuma, East Jakarta. The forest area according to regulations of existing city local governments is not enough to support sustainable urban development indicators. Therefore, it requires an extensive mapping of urban forest potential development accurately by utilizing satellite imaging technology. Landsat-TM satellite imagery data can provide a full picture of the potential land width for urban forest area development. The results of this satellite image will then be made into a model of urban forest as one of the indicators of sustainable urban development. This research aims to support sustainable urban development through environmental balance in the form of a green neighborhood revitalization and development of urban forests and to create socio-economic balance. This paper uses a dynamic system model to simulate the conditions of the region against the intervention performed in the potential area for development of urban forests which are derived from urban spatial analysis based on satellite image data, using GIS program as a tool. The result is a model of urban forest area which is integrated with a social and economic function to encourage the development of sustainable cities.
