The National Transparent Optical Network (NTON) is co-funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the National Transparent Optical Network Consortium (NTONC). Members of the NTONC include Nortel Networks, GST Telecommunications, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories (LLNL), Sprint Communications and the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART). NTON provides a 10+ Gb/s open research platform for Next Generation Internet (NGI) trials. NTON is a 2000 km 10-20 Gb/s wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) network deployed using in-place commercial fiber. NTON links reach government, university and private sector labs and provide the ability to interface with most of the broadband research networks in the US. Planned interchange networks are: ATDnet, HSCC, DREN, NREN, ESnet, vBNS, SVTT, Abilene, Canarie, CalREN, and others. NTON will simultaneously support device design R&D, network R&D and testing of high bandwidth enabled applications. NTON provides direct access to nearly all of the major universities on the West Coast at data rates up to, and potentially beyond, 2.5 Gb/s. NTON will also connect major West Coast supercomputer sites, digital libraries, high energy physics labs and medical research institutions.

Turbo trellis-coded modulation (T-TCM) is one of several techniques for combining turbo codes with multilevel modulation in order to save the bandwidth of the transmission systems. T-TCM was shown to perform very well on AWGN channels, but its performance over frequency-selective fading channels is unknown. In this paper, a system model to investigate the performance of T-TCM schemes over frequency-selective fading channels is proposed. Simulation results show that when an appropriate receiver is available, T-TCM also performs well on frequency-selective fading channels. T-TCM performance is much better than any other coded-modulation scheme for this type of channel.

The uncertain parameters are supposed to belong to a given convex bounded polyhedral domain. Sufficient conditions for the existence of a stable linear filter assuring stability and a prescribed H/sub /spl infin// performance for the filtering error system for all allowed uncertainties are established in terms of linear matrix inequalities. In this article, we have studied the role of photoeffects in the formation of aluminum back surface field (BSF) contacts on p-type silicon wafers by using different lamp configurations in rapid thermal processing (RTP). Use of photons of wavelengths less than 800 nm in conjunction with infrared and visible photons in RTP resulted in the reduction of processing time from 202 to 138 s and the processing temperature from 890 to 850 °C. The reduction in the overall thermal budget used for BSF contact formation is a direct result of photon assisted RTP. The availability of a large number of high energy photons on the metal surface also resulted in improved electrical, structural and mechanical properties of the processed device.

Pascal's long and successful run at West Point illustrated Winston Churchill's dictum that, "The absence of alternatives clears the mind wonderfully." However, by the mid-90s, the United States Military Academy was finding that Pascal, long the educational workhorse, was no longer the clear choice for serious computer science education. The decision was taken to evaluate alternatives to Pascal. The criteria selected for programming language evaluation were student learning outcomes based on course goals and objectives. The controlled educational environment of a service academy provides an excellent opportunity to conduct research using control groups and experimental groups. We conducted a side by side comparison of the use of Pascal, which was specifically designed for instructional purposes, and Ada in an introductory course. The experiment demonstrated that students were much more successful in Ada than in Pascal, and led to the revision of the Academy core curriculum to use Ada 95 in our introductory computer science class. This paper discusses the details of our comparison, citing specific examples to illustrate a rational basis for evaluating programming language features against course objectives.

The complexity of analog VLSI systems is often limited by the number of pins on a chip rather than by the die area. Currently, many analog parameters and biases are stored off chip. Moving parameter storage on chip could save pins and allow us to create complex programmable analog systems. In this paper, we present a design for an on-chip non-volatile analog memory cell that can be configured in addressable arrays and programmed easily. We use floating-gate MOS transistors to store charge, and we use the processes of tunneling and hot-electron injection to program values. We achieve greater than 13-bit precision with no crosstalk between memory cells.

This paper presents an accurate estimation formula for the minimum filter length of optimum (the minimax criterion-based) FIR low-pass digital filters. The authors have proposed an accurate estimation formula for the particular case that the passband and stopband ripples are identical. Now we expand the formula for the general case. The accuracy of the proposed formula is evaluated in comparison with that of the conventional formulae. We also describe how to apply the proposed formula for the design of other types of filters.
