NSF/IEEE CAEME center. An exciting opportunity to align electromagnetic education with the nineties

He authored one book onElectromagnetic Fields and Waves published by Prentice Hall in 1992 he edited theCAEME Software Book Vol. I 1991 and he coedited a third book onMicrowave Processing of Materials published by the Materials Research Society in 1991. The holder of seven patents he has contributed 16 chapters to eight research books published more than 90 papers in technical journals and made numerous presentations in technical conferences. In 1983 he received the College of Engineering Outstanding Teaching Award and the College Patent Award for creative innovative and practical invention. In 1984 he was selected by the Utah Section of the IEEE as Engineer of the Year. In 1984 he received the Outstanding Paper Award from the International Microwave Power Institute and in 1985 he received the Curtis W. McGraw ASEE National Research Award for outstanding early achievements by a university faculty member. In 1991 he received the ASEE George Westinghouse National Award for innovation in engineering education. In 1986 Dr. Iskander established the Engineering Clinic Program in the College of Engineering at the University of Utah. Since then the program has attracted more than 45 research projects from 18 companies throughout the United States. He is also the director of the NSF/IEEE Center for Computer Applications in Electromagnetics Education (CAEME). He co-organized symposia on “Microwave Processing of Materials” held in conjunction with Materials Research Society meetings in the Springs of 1990 and 1992 in San Francisco. The National Science Foundation/Institute of electrical and Electronic Engineers (NSF/IEEE) Center for computer Applications in Electromagnetic (EM) Education (CAEME) was funded in early 1990 by the National Science Foundation to stimulate and accelerate the use of computers and software tools in EM education. The Center is managed by the Executive Office of IEEE on behalf of the Antennas and Propagation Society. This organizational structure provided avenues for broad participation by universities, professional societies, and corporations in the Center's activities. In two years of operation, CAEME has organized several workshops and special sessions in international meetings, published its first software book, prepared a lesson on “Electromagnetic Waves” using interactive video, and raised over $ 130,000 from university membership, participating societies, and corporate sponsors. This article summarizes CAEME activities, outlines its organizational structure, and briefly describes the contents of its first software book. Future developments are discussed and avenues for participation are outlined.

MULTIDATABASE SYSTEMS - AN ADVANCED CONCEPT IN HANDLING DISTRIBUTED DATA

Multidatabases integrate the data from preexisting, heterogeneous local databases into a distributed environment, and present global users with transparent methods to use the total information in the system. This chapter describes the taxonomy of global information-sharing systems, multidatabase issues, multidatabse design choices, analysis of existing multidatabase systems, and the position of multidatabase systems in the taxonomy. Multidatabase language systems have no constraints on system size, but the tradeoff for achieving this is a multiple-data-source user paradigm and a more complex user interface. Multidatabase issues, such as site autonomy, differences in data representation, and concurrency control are also discussed in the chapter. Site autonomy is a major strength of multidatabases, yet it is also a major constraint on the global system design. Differences in data representation are many and varied, and resolving these differences is a major concern of the global system design. Global updates are a major current restriction in many systems, and the focus of much current research. To make multidatabase systems more useful and efficient, some deficiencies in existing prototypes must be resolved before they can evolve into commercial products, such as global concurrency control, global security, maintenance and administration, and error control and recovery. Multidatabase systems should begin to have a larger impact in the information-processing world as more powerful systems to become generally available in the near future.

ACOUSTIC TRANSMISSION OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM USING SPEECH STIMULATION

Two methods for the analysis of the acoustic transmission of the respiratory system are presented. Continuous speech utterance is used as acoustic stimulation. The transmitted acoustic signal is recorded from various sites over the chest wall. The AR method analyzes the power spectral density function of the transmitted sound, which heavily depends on the microphone assembly and the utterance. The method was applied to a screening problem and was tested on a small database that consisted of 19 normal and five abnormal patients. Using the first five AR coefficients and the prediction error of an AR(10) model, as discriminating features, the system screened all abnormals. An ARMA method is suggested, which eliminates the dependence on microphone and utterance. In this method, the generalized least squares identification algorithm is used to estimate the ARMA transfer function of the respiratory system. The normal transfer function demonstrates a peak at the range of 130-250 Hz and sharp decrease in gain for higher frequencies. A pulmonary fibrotic patient demonstrated a peak at the same frequency range, a much higher gain in the high frequency range with an additional peak at about 700 Hz.

Investigations on the junctions made between Pb and polycrystalline Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (BSCCO) are reported. The BSCCO surfaces were treated with number of methods including mechanically scraping, plasma sputtering, plasma oxidation, and Br etch before junctions were fabricated. The current-voltage characteristics and dynamic resistance (dV/dI) vs voltage have been measured at both 77K and 4.2K. We observed, among other features, a Pb gap structure similar to that seen in Pb/YBa2Cu3O7-delta junctions, a magnetic dependent supercurrent, an asymmetric I-V curve, and narrow resistance peaks. Properties of junctions prepared in different manners are compared. Both XPS and electrical studies indicated that Br etch is not suitable for the BiSrCaCuO system in spite of its successful application in YBa2Cu3O7-delta.

Blind equalization of systems which contain a nonminimum phase component is a difficult task. Minimizing the energy (l/sub 2/ minimization) of the equalizer output (under a fixed tap constraint) cannot be guaranteed to open the eye (to reliably unscramble the message) because it tends to converge to an equalizer setting that contains a reflection of the unstable zeros inside the unit circle. It is shown that, in at least one simple setup involving a mixture of minimum and nonminimum phase elements, an l/sub infinity / minimization of the equalizer output is the appropriate criterion which should be minimized in order to successfully open the eye. Utilizing a finite impulse response equalizer constrained to have a unity coefficient on the center tap, it is shown that for a large enough dimension (depending on the closeness of the zeros of the channel to the unit circle) the eye will be opened. There is no simple (gradient) scheme to exactly implement the l/sub infinity / minimization. The use of a gradient l/sub p/ scheme for large p is proposed.< >

A Petri-net-based integrated model for the performance analysis of network and database transactions, generated by manufacturing clients for the computer resources, which are acting as the servers, is discussed. A Petri-net-based multifaceted integrated modeling (PNBMIM) approach to investigate the relevant system integration issues between the logical and the physical access of the information in the manufacturing system is described. The PNBMIM approach proposes an integrated conceptual framework for modeling and performance (both structural and behavioral) analysis of data flow and communication flow. This framework should provide some answers to the impact of relative time-scales on the coupling and decoupling of the various levels of a computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) system and identify the time-scales where integration becomes important.< >

Quantifying the effect of moisture on the electrical properties of thin dielectric films requires the use of a model that takes into account the geometry of the test structure and the dielectric properties of the air layer above the device. Using this approach, it was found that the electrical properties of dry PI (polyimide) do not change substantially after six weeks of aging at 85 degrees C/85% RH (relative humidity). The dielectric permittivity of PI as a function of %RH increased with aging for excitation frequencies between 12 Hz and 100 kHz. This increase is correlated with observed changes in the surface chemistry of the aged PI film. Shifts in ESCA peak intensities indicate oxidation of the PI surface and deimidization with aging. Possible mechanisms for the observed changes in dielectric properties with aging include a change in the morphology of the bulk PI, resulting in a decreased surface to volume ratio, increased water absorption, a change in the interaction of absorbed water with the PI matrix, and dielectric interfacial effects.< >

His research interests include unconfined aquifer contamination hazardous waste site remediation and analytical modeling of problems in environmental fluid mechanics. Dr. Ostendorf is a registered professional engineer in Massachusetts and a member of the American Geophysical Union American Society of Civil Engineers Soil Science Society of America Water Pollution Control Federation and Association of Environmental Engineering Professors as well as the National Water Well Association.2 Lowell E. Leach is an environmental engineer with the Robert S. Kerr Environmental Research Laboratory of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (RS Kerr Environmental Research Laboratory U.S. EPA P.O. Box 1198 Ada OK74820). Leach received his B.S. ingeological engineering at the University of Oklahoma in 1959 and has been a registered professional engineer in Oklahoma since 1966. With 29 years of experience in field applications of geological engineering he is responsible for developing methodology for sampling ground water and subsurface materials for the Robert S. Kerr Environmental Research Laboratory.3 Erich S. Hinlein is a research assistant in the Environmental Engineering Program of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts (Civil Engineering Department University of Massachusetts Amherst MA 01003). His research interests include ground water pollution hazardous waste site investigation and transport processes in unconfined aquifers. Two complementary field sampling methods for the determination of residual aviation gasoline content in the contaminated capillary fringe of a fine, uniform, sandy soil were investigated. The first method featured field extrusion of core barrels into pint-size Mason jars, while the second consisted of laboratory partitioning of intact stainless steel core sleeves. The barrel extrusion procedure involved jar headspace sampling in a nitrogen-filled glove box, which delineated the 0.7m thick residually contaminated interval for subsequent core sleeve withdrawal from adjacent boreholes. Soil samples removed from the Mason jars (in the field) and sleeve segments (in the laboratory) were subjected to methylene chloride extraction and gas chromatographic analysis to compare their aviation gasoline content. The barrel extrusion sampling method yielded a vertical profile with 0.10m resolution over an essentially continuous 5.0m interval from the ground surface to the water table. The sleeve segment alternative yielded a more resolved 0.03m vertical profile over a shorter 0.8m interval through the capillary fringe. The two methods delivered precise estimates of the vertically integrated mass of aviation gasoline at a given horizontal location, and a consistent view of the vertical profile as well. In the latter regard, a 0.2m thick lens of maximum contamination was found in the center of the capillary fringe, where moisture filled all voids smaller than the mean pore size. The maximum peak was resolved by the core sleeve data, but was partially obscured by the barrel extrusion observations, so that replicate barrels or a half-pint Mason jar size should be considered for data supporting vertical transport analyses in the absence of sleeve partitions.

He received his B.S. in naval architecture and marine engineering from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture in 1982 (as an ASNE scholar) and is currently an M.S. candidate in systems engineering at the University of Virginia. Alfred Skolnickserved over 30 years as an engineering duty officer and retired from the Navy with the rank of captain in 1983. His early assignments included tactical missile engineering shipboard duty and Polaris submarine inertial navigation. Changing threat requirements and radical budget shifts imply that Navy operational needs will broaden and engineering solutions will face tougher constraints. Existing and emerging technology promise increased combat capability in smaller packages;space-based assets will allow operator orchestration of widely dispersed naval units via connectivity attributes previously unavailable. Tactical data relay by downlink may permit reallocation of responsibilities among several platforms, space, air, or seaborne, so ships can be outfitted for custom-use (sensing, unique data processing, high-firepower) and optimized to meet specific mission needs. These evolving capabilities demand a fresh look at ship concepts and prospective force structures consistent with global and fiscal realities. Warfighting performance formerly unknown in small ship design may offer a very effective solution to the intricate, interacting issues of falling defense budgets, diverse operational requirements and complex national priorities. Multimission ships which take advantage of new or current technology to reduce ship size, manning and cost could be affordable in sufficient numbers to meet our continuing worldwide obligations, complement our larger ships' force structure, and produce a balanced fleet. These same ships could satisfy U.S. maritime needs beyond the Navy and improve export trade through foreign military sales (FMS).
