At Louisiana Tech University, all freshmen engineering students are required to take two fundamental engineering courses, engineering Problem Solving I and II (ENGR 120 and ENGR 121), in their first two quarters of study. Funded by a NSF grant, this curriculum has been the core of the Integrated engineering Curriculum at Louisiana Tech. These courses require student teams to fabricate a small centrifugal pump driven by a DC motor, to test the pump performance, and to control the temperature and salinity of a small volume of water through a fish tank project. Although designed to benefit all engineering majors, industrial engineering seniors felt differently, that the project-based experience was not directly related to the knowledge learned in their upper-level industrial engineering courses. In the IISE Annual Conference and Expo 2020, the lead author of this paper presented a plan to integrate the centrifugal pump freshmen make in ENGR 120 through several industrial engineering courses in the curriculum. In this paper, the authors present the implementation of this teaching plan in two upper-level industrial engineering courses: Work Design, and Lean Manufacturing and Management Systems. Students in these two courses were asked to determine the standard time for assembling the pumps and set up a Kanban production line to fabricate pumps. Results show that the students felt using a product they were familiar with, helps them connect the concepts learned in classes to real world applications. © 2023 IISE Annual Conference and Expo 2023. Magnesium-based batteries are potential candidates for next-generation rechargeable batteries due to the divalent nature of magnesium cations and the natural abundance of magnesium resources. In this study, the electrochemical activity of Mg-6mass%Al-3mass%Ca anodes combined with Sn was investigated. Thin ribbons of the anode specimens were prepared by a single-roll rapid solidification method. The results showed that the electrochemical activity increased upon adding 1 mass% Sn, while it decreased for 3 mass% Sn. Based on the results of an X-ray diffraction analysis, the addition of Sn led to the formation of Mg2Sn and Ca2Sn phases, which increased the lattice distortion. Scanning electron microscopy observations indicated that these secondary phases were homogeneously distributed for 1 mass% Sn addition, while they were coarsely distributed for 3 mass% Sn. © 2025 The Japan Institute of Light Metals.

Breast cancer is an occurrence of cancer that attacks breast tissue and is the most common cancer among women worldwide, affecting one in eight women. In this modern world, breast cancer image classification simplifies the process of analyzing, providing objective and accurate results. By leveraging machine learning algorithms and computer vision techniques, we developed breast cancer detection. The dataset is histopathology dataset from BreakHis and UNHAS Hospital. We chose the ConvNeXt-Tiny model then modified the classifier head as the proposed method. Before the dataset is processed by the model, we augment the images by applying random horizontal and vertical flips, adjustments to brightness, contrast, saturation, and hue using color jitter. The augmentation process simulates real-world variance and enhances the model's ability to generalize to unseen data. Our proposed model gained better performance (accuracy, F1-Score) results compared two other techniques to VGG16 and SVM. According to our experiments, the F1-Score for the ConvNeXt-Tiny model with classifier head modification is higher at 0.9516, than the gain for VGG16 at 0.9292, and the gain for the SVM at 0.83. © 2024 IEEE.

Observation of the spatial Goos–Hänchen shift due to low-loss dielectrics

In this paper, we present the first, to the best of our knowledge, measurement of spatial Goos–Hänchen (GH) shifts for low-loss dielectrics (φ0 = Εi/|Εr| 1). The observed resonant shifts are up to 100λ. Because of this sharp resonance, measuring the shift is challenging. We argue that it might be possible to use these simple materials for the many proposed applications of the GH shift. Moreover, we show that by using the GH shifts, we can discriminate materials with almost similar values of the real permittivity (Εr) but of different imaginary values (Εi), in our case, the bulk gallium arsenide (GaAs) versus silicon (Si). This allows us to put forth a method to measure the complex permittivity of low-loss dielectrics through the GH shifts. Using this method, the measured permittivity values for Si and GaAs differ from standard values by as little as 0.2% for the real Ε component and 7% for the imaginary Ε component. Further precise and accurate measurement of GH shift will result in an alternative method to measure the permittivity of materials with almost similar real permittivities. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group. Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology supporting bidirectional power transfer allows electric vehicles (EVs) to contribute and consume energy bidirectionally. Because the specific properties and requirements of V2G, Khan et al. proposed a key agreement scheme for the V2G system to ensure the security of communication between a vehicle user and the grid server. However, after analyzing Khan et al.’s scheme, we find that it suffers from some flaws such that it cannot ensure anonymity, resist impersonation attack, man-in-the-middle attack and denial-of-service attack, and work as expected. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

To address the limitations of typical coil detection systems and enhance the performance of traditional magnetic field imaging (MFI) systems, we propose a MFI system that uses a 4×4 array of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) sensors. The core controller of the proposed system was designed using a pipelined parallelization algorithm and implemented on a high-speed field-programmable gate array (FPGA) in a fully hardware-based architecture. The designed MFI system can achieve parallel acquisition of magnetic field components from the 16-channel AMR sensor array, parallel data processing, parallel data transmission, and parallel computations in a single cycle of only 4 ms. Compared with typical detection systems, the proposed solution not only exhibits superior performance but can also provide dynamic visual representations of sensed information. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

It has long been established that plastic flow in the asthenosphere interacts constantly with the overlying lithosphere and plays a pivotal role in controlling the occurrence of geohazards such as earthquakes and volcanic ***,accurately characterizing the direction and lateral extents of the mantle flow field is notoriously difficult,especially in oceanic areas where deployment of ocean bottom seismometers(OBSs) is expensive and thus *** this study,by applying shear wave splitting analyses to a dataset recorded by an OBS array that we deployed between mid-2019 and mid-2020 in the South China Sea(SCS),we show that the dominant mantle flow field has a NNW-SSE orientation,which can be attributed to mantle flow extruded from the Tibetan Plateau by the ongoing Indian-Eurasian *** addition,the results suggest that E-W oriented flow fields observed in South China and the Indochina Peninsula do not extend to the central SCS.

To widen the applications, cationic cellulose beads were synthesized by adding glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride (GTAC) to cellulose fibers dissolved in a mixture of tetraethylammonium hydroxide and urea at room temperature for cationic modification, and dropping the cationic cellulose solution into an acetic acid solution. Herein, the effects of the added GTAC amount on the properties of cationic cellulose soultion and cellulose beads were investigated. It was observed that increasing the amount of GTAC increased the viscosity and surface tension of the cationically modified cellulose solution and increased the particle size of the cellulose beads. Furthermore, the zeta potential of the cellulose beads can be controlled by modifying the GTAC amount. © 2022 Korean Technical Assoc. of the Pulp and Paper Industry. All rights reserved.

A deep learning framework for automatic assessment of presence in virtual reality using multimodal behavioral cues

Effective development of virtual reality (VR) applications is heavily reliant on the evaluation of user experience (UX). However, traditional methods such as questionnaires have inherent limitations which hinder their ability to capture nuanced behavioral responses and impede the agility of VR content creation: They are time-consuming, burdensome for users, and require significant human effort for interpretation. This study introduces an automated framework aimed at addressing the limitations of questionnaire-based evaluations to assess UX in VR. Our primary focus is to validate the concept of this framework through assessment of the sense of presence (SOP), a crucial psychological perception with significant impact on VR UX. Our proposed framework utilizes a deep neural network (DNN) to analyze patterns in multimodal behavioral cues, including facial expressions, head movements, and hand movements, to predict scores from the Igroup Presence Questionnaire (IPQ). Additionally, we introduce two statistical profiles: the Visual Entropy Profile (VEP), which offers insights into visual complexity by depicting scene entropy, and the Experiential Presence Profile (EPP), which is designed to capture users’ historical SOP levels to enable personalized baseline and sensitivity estimation. The proposed framework achieves a significant correlation between actual and predicted IPQ scores, with a Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient of 0.7303, showcasing the potential of DNNs in analyzing complex behavioral signals and automating SOP assessment. This study represents a pioneering effort in leveraging DNNs for the automatic assessment of SOP and paves the way for future advances in automatically assessing VR UX and unlocking new opportunities in the field. © The Author(s) 2025.
