Effectively harnessing feature correlations is crucial for optimal performance in video action recognition tasks, whether in spatial or temporal dimensions. Convolutional operations excel at capturing local features through correlations among nearby points, while self-attention mechanisms capture global information by enabling interactions among all feature points. However, the limitations of a single convolutional layer in comprehending holistic feature correlations and the tendency of self-attention layers to overlook local positional characteristics necessitate an innovative approach. We introduce the Spatial–Temporal Convolutional Attention Network, comprising the Spatial Convolutional Attention Network and the Temporal Convolutional Attention Network. This approach strategically combines the strengths of self-attention for global context and convolution for local features, mitigating the limitations of individual layers. Key innovations include [explicitly state innovations]. To reinforce the uniqueness of our approach, we provide specific comparisons with existing methods, highlighting its superiority. In rigorous experiments, our proposed network demonstrates enhanced recognition performance, quantified through metrics such as accuracy and F1 score improvements over baseline models. By effectively capturing feature correlations, our approach elevates the neural network's capacity for spatiotemporal modeling, marking a significant advancement in video action recognition. Condition monitoring of transformers is crucial in preventing unexpected outages and equipment damage due to the ageing and deterioration processes. However, the traditional methods of setting alarm thresholds are problematic due to the dynamic changes in the operational and environmental conditions of transformers. This paper proposes a novel approach to partial discharge (PD) detection by integrating the Nonlinear Auto Regressive eXogenous (NARX) neural network with the Two-Sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test for online monitoring of a partial discharge index, called Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR). The proposed model aims to enhance the accuracy of PD detection by increasing the chances of identifying normal process behavior and reducing false positive alerts. The results of the study demonstrate the effectiveness of the NARX-K-S integration in improving the accuracy of partial discharge detection and provide a new direction for the condition monitoring of transformers. © 2023 IEEE.

This study focuses on the brainwave analysis of the correlation between listening to the rain and water sounds and reducing human-perceived temperature. Brainwave changes are monitored when experimental subjects listen to rain and water sounds at various frequencies. The experiment result shows that listening to the sounds of rain and water in an environment of high temperature and high humidity can boost α waves to induce feelings of calm and relaxed mental state. In order to investigate subjects’ psychological and physiological changes induced by brainwave changes while listening to rain and water sounds for different time durations in a high temperature and humidity environment, this study uses the Fourier transform to obtain the spectra of natural rain/water sounds and analyzes the sound frequencies. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Online stochastic generators using Slepian bases for regional bivariate wind speed ensembles from ERA5

Reanalysis data, such as ERA5, provide a comprehensive and detailed representation of the Earth’s system by assimilating observations into climate models. While crucial for climate research, they pose significant challenges in terms of generation, storage, and management. For 3-hourly bivariate wind speed ensembles from ERA5, which face these challenges, this paper proposes an online stochastic generator (OSG) applicable to any global region, offering fast stochastic approximations while storing only model parameters. A key innovation is the incorporation of the online updating, which allows data to sequentially enter the model in blocks of time and contribute to parameter updates. This approach reduces storage demands during modeling by eliminating the need to store and analyze the entire dataset, and enables near real-time emulations that complement the generation of reanalysis data. The Slepian concentration technique supports the efficiency of the proposed OSG by representing the data in a lower-dimensional space spanned by data-independent Slepian bases optimally concentrated within the specified region. We demonstrate the flexibility and efficiency of the OSG through two case studies requiring long and short blocks, specified for the Arabian-Peninsula region (ARP). For both cases, the OSG performs well across several statistical metrics and is comparable to the SG trained on the full dataset. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

programming ability is the core ability of this era and can be obtained and improved through practice. In this paper, an Automated programming Assessment system based on Mastery learning and Peer competition (APAMP) was proposed and developed. APAMP allows students to practice repeatedly by providing immediate feedback after their programs are submitted. It also presents an analytical dashboard as a competition mechanism for students to visualize their learning performance and compare their performance with peers. By incorporating APAMP into programming courses, students can master programming skills through repeated practice, and their enthusiasm for learning programming can also be encouraged by peer competition. To evaluate the effects of APAMP on the learning performance of students with programming language learning and novice students, a quasi-experiment was conducted in a high school. The experimental results showed that the learning achievement of the two groups of students improved significantly. Moreover, the learning attitude of students in the experienced group improved significantly, with the experienced students benefiting more from the system than the novice students. In fact, the novice students showed a significant decline in learning attitude and learning motivation, which was contrary to our intuition. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

During COVID-19 pandemic several countries have implemented quarantines in response to the virus’ spread, which was considered an emergency. Thailand was under a state of emergency from January to December 2020, which has had an impact on the state of environment. Based on real-time data from the Pollution Control Department, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on PM2.5 pollution in Thailand was examined. Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation was used to generate a more accurate visual representation of the PM2.5 pollution through a spatial distribution of atmospheric pollutants across the provinces of Thailand. PM2.5 levels in all considered areas reduced considerably between 2017 and 2020, with the most significant decrease occurring during the lockdown period of April-July in 2020. As the pre-COVID-19 period occurred during late winter in Thailand, the monthly average PM2.5 concentrations in all selected provinces were gradually increased from December 2019 to March 2020. During the lockdown period, the concentration of PM2.5 was reduced in Pathum Thani (48.9%), Samut Sakhon (35.6%) Samut Prakarn (33.6%), and Bangkok (31.7%) The spatial–temporal distribution of the PM2.5 levels in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakarn provinces were analyzed for October 2020, during the new normal period. The results showed a significant decrease in concentration of up to 31% compared to previous years where industrial operations were situated. This study showed that the government enforced lockdown during COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial in understanding the impact of reduced human activities on anthropogenic air pollutants’ concentrations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The gaming industry has changed since advanced technologies and hardware specifications were able to create the possibility of gaming with connective network or known as online gaming. Some communities are accepting positively, and others are contradicted. Thus, there is an urgency to know the insight from their sentiment. The present research extracts 10 thousand sentiments at social media with sentiment text analysis. The text is interpreted into six based emotions namely anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, and surprise. The mining analysis by lexicon valance aware dictionary and sentiment reasoner (VADER) projects the Joy emotions as the domination result with 94.74%. Positive joy expression on online gaming is revealed by extracting the sentiment analysis. In total, ten thousand data were collected from the corpus, which resulted in the happy sentiments that were experienced. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Human-nature relationships and its implications on the management of eastern arc water catchments of Tanzania

This study is aimed at understanding the Human–Nature Relationships (HNRs) in the Lower Mngeta and Upper Zigi catchments, as parts of Eastern Arc water catchment areas, in the United Republic of Tanzania. This study employed the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Norm-Activation Model (NAM) to understand the position of humans in the two catchments’ ecosystems. The study design involved Focus Group Discussions, Key Informant Interview, and Household Questionnaire Surveys. A total of 310 (185 males and 125 females) villagers were involved in this study. Furthermore, four HRN typologies, master over nature, partner with nature, a participant in nature, and steward of nature, were adopted. The study findings indicated that there was no significant difference (X ² test, p > 0.05) in HNRs between the two catchments. Moreover, master over nature typology was dominant in both catchments, with values of 59.4% (n = 200) and 59.5% (n = 85) in Lower Mngeta and Upper Zigi, respectively. The main reason is that HNR is dependent on the nature of the livelihood activities and the mode of subsistence of a particular community. It was also found that the communities in Lower Mngeta and Upper Zigi catchments are mostly dependent on agricultural and hunting activities that highly depended on the two catchment resources. This study, therefore, recommends an increase in the level of community participation in all decision-making activities, as well as an increase in environmental education for sustainable utilization and management of the two catchment resources. © 2023 The Author(s). Today's pluralistic and globalized society requires a global perspective in how we think, view ourselves, and relate to others to collaborate successfully with people with different cultural backgrounds. To support the development of a global perspective, universities cultivate international co-operations to enable international mobility for students, faculty, and staff. However, in-person mobility can be inhibited due to various reasons. To support a wider pool of students gaining international experience, modern digital mediated course formats can be used to offer virtual instead of in-person mobility. This contribution evaluates a digital mediated course for mechanical engineering students (Global engineering, GE) held in co-operation between an US and a Portuguese university, where internationally mixed student groups working on design projects in an Hyflex setting. Asides a literature driven discussion about the need for Global Engineers and a detailed description of the GE course, a longitudinal analysis was performed to assess the impact of the GE course on the students' development of a global perspective. The longitudinal analysis showed strong statistical support that the digitally mediated GE course improved the participating students' global perspective, assessed with the Global Perspective Inventory (GPI), tremendously. The observed improvements were in three of the six GPI dimensions comparable to an in-person semester abroad. Limitations of the study and future investigations are discussed. © 2023 IEEE.

The ATT&CK MITRE framework serves as an expansive repository of adversary tactics, techniques, and procedures. Given the sheer volume of these intricate attack patterns, the conventional manual navigation method proves to be time-intensive and less efficient for security analysts. As a remedy, there arises a compelling necessity to present the rich content encapsulated within the ATT&CK MITRE repository through interactive visualizations. In this paper ATT&CKViz an interactive web-based cyber-attack patterns visualization tool is presented that aims to empower security analysts with the ability to effortlessly explore the repository from diverse angles, which facilitates deep insights into cyber threats. The aim is to understand cyber threat efficiently with a timely response. The empirical evaluations depict that effectiveness and user-friendliness of ATT&CKViz.
