Managing workflows for surgical services in large multi-speciality hospitals is a challenging task in part due to intrinsic as well as exogenous uncertainties and disturbances. Models and historical data are used to project utilizations and resource requirements for managing operating rooms (OR) over weeks and months. Such projection methods may be adapted in management decision making on the day of surgery if real-time event data can be obtained. A paradigm was developed to combine modelling, simulation, real-time sensor data processing, and visualization to assist coordination of the activities during perioperative processes.

We have utilized ZnCl 2 -dimethylsulfone (DMSO 2 ) as the electrolyte with added CoCl 2 and GdCl 3 for electrodepositing a magnetic film. Moreover, the controlled potential method was utilized for film deposition. The voltammogram revealed that the reduction of Co-Zn-Gd film can be achieved by applying a potential in the range from -0.1 to -0.5 volts. From the results of AGM analyses, a high squareness value (Mr/Ms = 0.923) of the Co-Zn-Gd film at -0.3 volt was observed. In previous research, perpendicular magnetic materials have been applied to magnetic optic (MO) media, magnetic recording heads, and perpendicular magnetic tunneling junction (pMTJ). However, preparation of magnetic materials is normally carried out in high vacuum systems. Since electrodeposition methods for preparation of magnetic films have several advantages, such as simple equipment, ease of operation and relatively large area, the use of electrodeposition has great potential for preparing films.

ABET accreditation is the established benchmark for undergraduate engineeringprograms in the United States, yet there are but four accredited undergraduate engineeringmanagementprograms and one accredited engineeringmanagementtechnologyprogram in the United States. This apparent paradox results from the many elements, characteristics, and factors contributing to successful accreditation. The scarcity of accredited programs is a concern to the engineeringmanagement discipline and a question to be dealt with. ABET accredited since 1992, Stevens Institute of technology presently has a relatively large, well established engineeringmanagement (EM) program. Its success is evidenced by the size of its faculty (15 full-time faculty) and external recognition (3 awards from the American Society of engineeringmanagement [ASEM] over the past 15 years). The University of the Pacific, by contrast, has a very small engineeringmanagementprogram (1 full-time dedicated faculty) that just received ABET accreditation in 2003. This program also received ASEM's 2004 Founder's Award for Academic Excellence and Leadership for undergraduate programs. This article compares and contrasts the accreditation processes in place at the engineeringmanagementprograms at Stevens Institute of technology and the University of Pacific. Among the factors considered most central to their accreditation success are the project and people management skills inherent to the discipline of engineeringmanagement. These skills provide the basis for a plethora of successful accreditation-focused activities within an EM program. Examples of activities leading toward accreditation and recommendations of how colleges and universities can implement similar processes are discussed.

Various elements and processes play a key role in the success of college chapters of national organizations. The activities, benefits, and problems of starting and maintaining an active college chapter can be many. The engineeringmanagement Honor Society (EMH) has the Alpha Beta student chapter at Stevens Institute of technology. This EMH student chapter is the second of almost 15 active chapters started in just the last two years. This paper identifies and discusses some of the elements used by the Stevens' chapter of EMH that are considered important to its founding and success. Among the attributes considered most central to the continued success of the Stevens' engineeringmanagement Honor Society chapter are the practiced project and people management skills implicit to the discipline of engineeringmanagement itself. These skills in professional mentoring provide the fodder for successful students, and thus a successful student chapter. Examples of processes and recommendations of how colleges and universities can implement similar procedures are discussed.

The complex large-scale integrated open systems (CLIOS) process is an overarching mechanism for considering systems, especially those exhibiting nested complexity, in which both the physical and the institutional aspects are complex. A special case of the CLIOS process is regional strategic transportation planning. New technologies, such as intelligent transportation systems, allow consideration of the planning, management, operations, and maintenance of transportation systems at the regional scale. Although the technological issues in advancing to this scale have proved tractable, the institutional issues concerned with deploying these systems across political jurisdictions with different measures of performance and different cultural perspectives has proved quite difficult. This paper explores processes for studying these institutional questions and integrating a number of concepts into the process: technological change, sustainability, real options, supply chain management, the various transport modes, and social, political, and economic factors. The paper serves as a case study of tailoring the CLIOS process into a process specifically designed to systematically address particular issues, in this case, regional strategic transportation planning.
