Information technology is providing manufacturers with additional flexibility with regard to their supply chain network choices. Our research studies supply chain network organization structures categorized by the organic and mechanistic management control structures. The structural impacts on cost and fill rate performance are studied in two-echelon and two-supply-chain network organization models under different market coordination conditions using system dynamic simulations. Our results show significant effects of demand and network structural factors, and their interactions, on these measures. As demand becomes dynamic, the cooperative interaction model, where supply chains cooperate to satisfy customer demand, is found to have better system performance than the competitive supply chain model. The analysis also suggests that increasing the responsiveness at the downstream plant is particularly important to the overall system performance improvement.

Model Predictive Control (MPC) is an advanced control strategy for improving the control of processes that display relatively large variations in system controlled output values in comparison to the system's control set point, for processes with appreciable process variable interactions, and for systems that display a large amount of process deadtime and/or system disturbances This paper reports the implementation of MPC techniques directly on a programmable logic controller (PLC) rather than on a personal computer (PC) for an industrial sugar cooking process. This study implemented and evaluated three PC-based, commercial MPC technologies for the sugar cooking process, and a new model state feedback implementation directly on Rockwell Automation's ControlLogix® PLC. A standard proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control implementation was used as a baseline for comparing the MPC strategies. The comparative analysis focused on the dynamic response of each strategy at startup, including both temperature rise time and overshoot, and the steady-state disturbance rejection capabilities of each strategy. The test results showed that the MPC strategies controlled the sugar cooking process better than the traditional PID control method in regards to the target parameters. The tests also showed that the PLC-based MPC strategy was comparable to the PC-based commercial MPC applications. This strategy has several benefits such as requiring no external hardware, software, and communications protocols, which may result in a less expensive implementation than the commercial MPC strategies. This is of particular interest for implementation in an educational setting due to the lower cost, use of standard laboratory equipment, and relevance to Electrical engineering and engineeringtechnology curriculum.

Advances in corporate householding are needed to address certain categories of data quality problems caused by data misinterpretation. In this paper, we first summarize some of these data quality problems and our more recent results from studying corporate householding applications and knowledge exploration. Then we outline a technical approach to a corporate householding knowledge processor (CHKP) to solve a particularly important type of corporate householding problem-entity aggregation. We illustrate the operation of the CHKP by using a motivational example in account consolidation. Our CHKP design and implementation uses and expands on the COntext INterchange (COIN) technology to manage and process corporate householding knowledge.

The Rose-Hulman Ventures experience which incubates enterpreneurial engineers and does quality preparation of technical professionals is discussed. The advantages of incubators include such as low cost space, internet connection, shared services, business advice and proximity to to the technology, equipment and personnel of the university. The infrastructure of these Ventures is 35,000 square foot building that houses a staff of about 25, laboratories and equipment which emphasize rapid prototype development. It is found that the experienced engineers and technicians are an important differentiating feature of Rose-Hulman Ventures and that it was successful from education point of view.

High Tech Marketing is characterized by high levels of technical, market and financial uncertainties, rapidly declining prices, collapsing markets and shortening product life cycles. Conventional strategic analysis tools are inadequate for effective analysis in developing high tech marketing strategy. This paper reviews a portfolio of contemporary strategic analysis tools that have been used effectively in developing high tech marketing strategies and case analyses. These include the Boston Consulting Group's (BCG) Portfolio Matrix, The technology Adoption Life Cycle, The Whole Product Concept, and Disruptive Technologies Mapping. Some of these tools have been effective in alleviating the engineering - Marketing interface issues in high tech companies. The implicit relationships between these tools are also explored.
