As the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Kennedy Space Center increase their launch rate, any process that could assist in the automation of the currently-manual lightning forecast would be valuable. This work examines the possibility of machine-learning assistance with the daily lighting forecast which is produced by the 45th Weather Squadron. A dataset consisting of 34 lightning, pressure, temperature and windspeed measurements taken from 334 daily weather balloon (rawinsonde) launches in the timeframe 2012–2021 was examined. Models were created using recursive feature elimination on logistic regression and XGClassifier algorithms, as well as Bayesian and bandit optimization of neural network (NN) hyperparameters. The modeling process was repeated after eliminating 13 features related to windspeed. The best performing models on both datasets were the optimized NN models, with an F1 metric of 0.79 on the full dataset and 0.66 on the reduced dataset. For comparison, a model that predicted randomly achieved F1 = 0.47 on this dataset. The addition of 13 windspeed-related features more than doubled the complexity of the 21-feature no-wind model while increasing model performance by 13 percentage points. A notable inference from the statistical modeling is that the most important feature from both datasets was the Thompson convective index, which is related to temperature, dewpoint, relative humidity and lapse rate.

Bacillus nitratireducens was isolated from textile effluent and showed high tolerance to chromium (Cr), reaching up to a 1000 mg/L MIC value. This research was aimed at utilizing biosorbents from live and dead cells of B. nitratireducens to remove Cr from an aqueous solution. A batch biosorption test was performed, and mechanisms analysis was approached by an adsorption-desorption test, SEM-EDS, and FTIR analysis. Cr removal by dead cells in 25, 50, and 100 mg/L of Cr were 58.99 ± 0.7%, 69.8 ± 0.2%, and 82.87 ± 0.11%, respectively, while that by live cells was 73.08 ± 1.9%, 80.27 ± 6.33%, and 86.17 ± 1.93%, respectively. Live cells showed significantly higher Cr removal and adsorption capacities as compared to dead cells. In all concentrations, absorption contributed more than adsorption to the Cr removal by both live and dead cells. Absorption of Cr was subjected to occur due to passive mechanisms in dead cells while involving some active mechanisms in live cells. SEM-EDS confirmed the detection of Cr on the cell surface, while FTIR revealed the shifting of some peaks after the biosorption test, suggesting interactions between Cr and functional groups. Further TEM analysis is suggested to be conducted as a future approach to reveal the inner structure of cells and confirm the involvement of absorption mechanisms. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has established commitments among Member States. These commitments are present in 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 global action targets to be achieved up to 2030. Social inclusion, environmental sustainability and good governance are among these commitments, which make them impact the business sector, such as water consumption and women’s participation in the workforce and leadership positions. The present study proposes a hybrid ensemble-Machine Learning-Dominance-based Rough Set Approach (E-ML-DRSA) model in the assessment of risks in sustainability and performance of electric power distribution companies in Brazil. The study uses 62 indicators of sustainability and performance, considering the period of eight years. The proposed hybrid model enables a more effective risk management of companies with basis on previous and simulated data, higher performance classification algorithms (accuracy and sensitivity) and conditional risk matrix. © 2024, The Authors. In 2023, we proposed a hypothetical knowledge management framework that incorporates science fiction prototyping (SFP) into the traditional roadmapping (RM) method to make RM more innovative and create a future beyond what we can currently imagine. Our main objective is to create a new organizational knowledge co-creation method for generating innovative ideas by incorporating humanistic factors utilizing SFP into RM. In the current article, we present the exploratory study we conducted to examine the hypothetical framework. Experimental workshops were held in November 2023 to compare the integrated method, in which SFP is applied to RM, with the original RM method. We followed a crossover design in the workshops and analyzed the results qualitatively and quantitatively following the perspectives proposed in the hypothetical framework. The qualitative analysis revealed successful integration regarding diverse and broader perspectives. The quantitative analysis utilizing Wilcoxon signed rank tests showed that the scores of the integrated method were significantly higher than those of RM for variables evaluating the effectiveness of the integration, while not for variables related to participants' feelings and satisfaction with the workshops, and sustainability. These findings indicate that the integration was successful in terms of its effectiveness as a method, while participants' subjective feelings toward the workshops were not different in both methods. As for sustainability, which requires a long-term perspective, no apparent differences were observed in these short-term workshops. © 2024 PICMET.

Lilies are popular in the global flower market, but consumers often lack information about specific varieties. To address this issue, this paper proposes a computer recognition platform based on the Vision Transformer (ViT) architecture. The proposed platform uses an improved vision transformer (ViT) architecture to classify different types of lilies, allowing consumers to access information and names of various Lilium species. The experimental results show that the proposed lily classification model achieved a 96.4% accuracy rate in classifying six lily species. © 2025 IEEE.

Work from home (WFH) has become a global phenomenon that continues to grow, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world. Many organizations and companies are forced to adopt a remote working model to keep their employees safe. The usefulness of WFH is still up for dispute, though. Text mining analysis can be utilized to determine how beneficial working from home is. Sentiment analysis uses text analysis to gather ten thousand data from social media Tweets. Joy emotion is predicted to dominate with 83.98 percent according to the mining performed by the vocabulary valence aware dictionary and sentiment reasoner (VADER). © 2023 The Authors. Distribution of PM_(0.1),PM_(1) and PM_(2.5) particle-and gas-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)during the 2019 normal,partial and strong haze periods at a background location in southern Thailand were investigated to understand the behaviors and carcinogenic ***1 was the predominant component,during partial and strong haze periods,accounting for 45.1% and 52.9% of total suspended particulate matter,respectively,while during normal period the contribution was only 34.0%.PM_(0.1) concentrations,during the strong haze period,were approximately 2 times higher than those during the normal *** increased levels of particle-PAHs for PM_(0.1),PM_(1) and PM_(2.5) were observed during strong haze period,about 3,5 and 6 times higher than those during normal ***-PAH concentrations were 10 to 36 times higher than those of particle-PAHs for PM_(2.5).Average total Benzo[a]Pyrene Toxic Equivalency Quotients(BaP-TEQ)in PM_(0.1),PM_(1) and PM_(2.5) during haze periodswere about 2–6 times higher than in the normal *** total accumulated Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risks(ILCRs)in PM_(0.1),PM_(1) and PM_(2.5) for all the age-specific groups during the haze effected scenario were approximately 1.5 times higher than those in nonhaze scenario,indicating a higher potential carcinogenic *** observations suggest PM_(0.1),PM_(1) and PM_(2.5) were the significant sources of carcinogenic aerosols and were significantly affected by transboundary haze from peatland *** leads to an increase in the volume of smoke aerosol,exerting a significant impact on air quality in southern Thailand,as well as many other countries in lower southeast Asia.

Local governments require new techniques and innovative approaches to assess initiatives to support the transition towards carbon neutrality. This paper presents a methodological approach for integrated building energy modeling and analysis of the impacts of energy conservation measures (ECMs) and energy-related CO 2 emissions in urban areas. To accomplish this goal, the proposed methodology follows four steps: (1) developing a building stock model for urban databases using a geographic information system (GIS) and QGIS software; (2) creating a detailed archetype-based building stock model using OpenStudio and EnergyPlus; (3) carrying out a scenario analysis of possible ECMs and pathways to achieve carbon neutrality; and (4) analyzing energy savings and energy-related CO 2 emissions. The developed methodology was applied to a tourism urban area, using Pattaya city as a case study. Based on the GIS building model, six archetypes were identified from all residential buildings, including hotels located in the study area. Prototypes of representative building energy models were simulated for a reference case with four ECMs. The results indicated that the building stock in the reference case used 497,669.05 TJ annually and emitted 80,470.32 ktC02eq. Of the four ECMs, a change to double glazing with low-E coating gave the highest energy savings and reductions in CO 2 emissions. This measure led to energy savings of 9,342.82 TJ and emission reductions of 356.23 ktC02eq compared to the reference case. Local governments and stakeholders can benefit from the proposed methodological approach for decision making related to energy and carbon neutrality pathways.

Urban services, such as water and energy resources, are usually consumed more in a tourism city, than in other city types. The water-energy nexus also contributes to the CO 2 emissions from urban areas. The purpose of this research is to investigate the link between water distribution systems, electricity consumption, and energy-related CO 2 emissions from water networks in Pattaya city, Thailand. These networks operate under the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA). The water distribution system was modeled in EPANET software, to simulate and examine the water supply capacity in the service pipes, to ensure that it meets the requirement set by PWA. Data were collected from PWA, in terms of the pressure and flow rate of the water supply and the amount of electricity consumption. The current water distribution system consists of 18 junctions, a with flow rate of 1,000 m 3 /hour and pressure at 45 m. The electricity consumption is 720 kWh/day and energy-related CO 2 emissions are 419.11 kgCO 2 eq/day. The water distribution system was modeled and analyzed to find the optimum flow rate and pressure for the least electricity consumption. The results show that the optimum solution is the flow rate of 1,500 m 3 /hour and a pressure at 50 m. Consequently, the electricity consumption is 300 kWh/day, while CO 2 emissions are reduced to 174.63 kgCO 2 eq/day. The findings from this study would benefit the PWA by reducing the electricity consumption and CO 2 emissions equivalent to 109 MWh/year and 63.73 tCO 2 eq, respectively.
