Statistical trend characteristics of rainfall over Kerala, India evaluated through analysing modern era retrospective analysis for research and applications (MERRA-2) reanalysis data

Statistical trends of rainfall (annual and seasonal rainfalls) in Kerala, India were characterised using the 44-years (1980–2023) data of Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) version 2. Monthly rainfall data were collected from the selected fifty locations which represent the state as a whole, and the collected data were then categorised into annual as well as seasonal (winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon) datasets based on the classification proposed by Indian Meteorological Organisation (IMD). Lag-1 autocorrelation, modified Mann Kendall (mMK), Pettitt test and Theil-Sen’s slope methods were used to determine the statistical characteristics of rainfalls in Kerala. Mean rainfalls were 3124 mm, 66 mm, 527 mm, 1667 mm and 862 mm, respectively, for annual, winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon periods. mMK based statistical trend analysis revealed an overall decreasing trend characteristics in annual (-0.54 mm.y⁻¹), monsoon (-1.20 mm.y⁻¹), and post-monsoon (-0.93 mm.y⁻¹) seasons whereas winter and summer rainfalls showed an increasing trend (0.67 mm.y⁻¹ and 3.40 mm.y⁻¹, respectively) for the state as a single unit. Pettitt test indicated four dominant periods of change in rainfall characteristics in the study area that spanned over the decades of 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010, in which major changes in annual and seasonal rainfalls were occurred during 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s. Theil-Sen’s slope-based estimation of rate of change in rainfall showed an average variation of -4.33 mm.y⁻¹, 0.17 mm.y⁻¹, 6.27 mm.y⁻¹, -6.54 mm.y⁻¹ and − 3.28 mm.y⁻¹ for annual, winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, respectively. The aim of our study is to evaluate the quality of water using machine learning methods. Potability is a subjective word that quantifies water quality. In this research, a variety of metrics were used to measure general potability of the water. The prescribed elements are applied like variable matrix to denote water quality. The article used three different classification methods, with success rates ranging from 84.27 to 93.16%, to predict the water quality class including ensemble approach like Random Forest (RFC), SVM for classification (SVC), as well as XGBoost. The Gradient Boosting approach, out of all the ones used, received the greatest accuracy (93.16%), precision (96.3%), recall (92.76%) and F-score (94.54%). Also, it achieved the least computational delay with a mean latency of 1.34 s. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

This study examines the preference of location of assignment of engineering professionals working in the Middle East. A survey method that allows for the use of structured questionnaire was adopted. The study was conducted to engineering professionals with a total of 55 participants. Data gathered was coded and analyzed using Conjoint Analysis. Results revealed that location of assignment in design offices or cities is still preferred over remote area assignments with attractive salary and other additional compensation packages. The research results recommend employers to also consider non-monetary aspects in order to retain valued employees in their companies. © 2022 ACM.

Obstacle removal in crowd evacuation is critical to safety and the evacuation system efficiency. Recently, manyresearchers proposed game theoreticmodels to avoid and remove obstacles for crowd evacuation. Game theoreticalmodels aim to study and analyze the strategic behaviors of individuals within a crowd and their interactionsduring the evacuation. Game theoretical models have some limitations in the context of crowd evacuation. Thesemodels consider a group of individuals as homogeneous objects with the same goals, involve complex mathematicalformulation, and cannot model real-world scenarios such as panic, environmental information, crowds that movedynamically, etc. The proposed work presents a game theoretic model integrating an agent-based model to removethe obstacles from exits. The proposed model considered the parameters named: (1) obstacle size, length, andwidth, (2) removal time, (3) evacuation time, (4) crowd density, (5) obstacle identification, and (6) route *** proposed work conducts various experiments considering different conditions, such as obstacle types, obstacleremoval, and several obstacles. Evaluation results show the proposed model’s effectiveness compared with existingliterature in reducing the overall evacuation time, cell selection, and obstacle removal. The study is potentially usefulfor public safety situations such as emergency evacuations during disasters and calamities.

The smart cities concept is strongly related to energy efficiency and low carbon patterns, what that refers to meeting the sustainability criteria established by regulatory mechanisms. The Smart City Index (SCI) data can reach a higher quality of living by observing aspects as mobility, health, safety, transparency, smart management, and many others, like the waste management. Thus, this set of indicators was used to evaluate the e-waste management as an emergent challenge in urban cities, providing both, the generation of waste from the intense consumption of electronic devices, as well meeting the questions arising from urbanization from the integration of digital solutions. This study proposes a model of analysis using simple linear regression and k-mean clustering as correlation methods. The findings suggested correlation between the SCI ranking, the E-waste generated, and the economic situation of the entire set of smart cities. Nevertheless, it was found weak correlation for the best rated cities. The results provided the perception that it is possible to identify correlation from the Smart City Index and aspects from the e-waste management system, enabling the discussion over the importance of next smart city indexes and given a new perspective to the e-waste management. © 2021 IEEE.

Current satellite technology has developed rapidly from traditional satellites to High Throughput Satellite (HTS) because it offers the advantages of multibeam antennas and reuse frequencies. Nevertheless, intersystem interference exists. This study discusses Co-Channel Interference (CCI) in the 4-reuse color scheme on an 8-beam GSO HTS with Ku-band frequencies in Indonesia. The analysis was conducted by analyzing the link budget and capacity before and after interference on the user communication side, forward downlink, and return uplink. The results of the link budget before CCI, Carrier to Noise ratio or C/N on Beam 1 to 8 ranging from 23.34 dB to 23.50 dB. And C/N on the return uplink is 18.74 dB to 19.07 dB. Then after interference, the Carrier to Noise plus Interference Ratio or C/(N+I) on the forward downlink produces 11.96 dB to 12.15 dB. While the return uplink produces C/(N+I) of 13.91 to 14.05 dB for Beam 1 to Beam 8. Because CCI decreases signal quality, the total capacity decreases where the forward downlink before interference produces 8.99 Gbps to 4.74 Gbps. The return uplink capacity of 7.09 Gbps due to interference becomes 5.27 Gbps. The purpose of further research recommendations is to analyze CCI on other reuse color schemes with a more significant number of beams and analyze appropriate mitigation techniques.

Spatiotemporal Analysis of Meteorological Drought Using Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) in Gabiley Region, Somaliland

Drought is a common natural disaster worldwide, with varying durations, severity levels, and spatial extents. This study aimed to model the spatiotemporal variation of meteorological drought events in the Gabiley region of Somaliland. The study utilized primary data collected from the meteorological station in Gabiley and CHIRPS (Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station) data to develop the standardized precipitation index (SPI) at a 3-month timescale. The results of the study revealed that the study area was characterized by drought and received inadequate precipitation, resulting in catastrophic droughts that negatively impacted the socioeconomic situation of the community. Mild-to-severe meteorological drought events occurred every two to three years, with the most severe droughts occurring in 1998, 2002, 2009, 2015, and 2017. Specifically, the year 2015 experienced the most severe meteorological drought in the region during the studied period. The predominant type of drought was a mild year in the study area. The SPI was found to potentially identify meteorological drought, making it a useful tool for policymakers as they develop drought adaptation and mitigation policies. This study provides valuable information that can benefit local authorities and policymakers in creating drought mitigation and adaptation strategies in the Gabiley region.

This paper presents a comprehensive review on the current state of digital simulation technology and its strategic application usages with a key focus on advanced compression garments. Although three-dimensional(3D) digital garment simulators have significantly impacted the apparel and textile industry, their use has been limited to visual prototyping, quality checking, or marketing. The physical properties of garment simulators have been overlooked in advanced functional manufacturing. This literature review investigates the possibility of strategically utilizing virtual physical properties to enhance garment functions, specifically in wearables and medical-grade compression fields. The first phase of this paper gives an overview of the current state of 3D garment simulation tools and their measurement features. This is followed by a gap analysis between simulated and physical property evaluations, focusing on minimizing the gaps. The literature is thoroughly examined to identify appropriate studies that uses digital tools for compressional garments and add value to wearables and healthcare applications. This paper provides valuable insights for apparel and textile engineers, enabling them to better understand the limitations and capabilities of garment simulators in improving advanced features for specific end users.

U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) personal property moves account for 15% of all domestic and international moves - accurate prediction of their cost could draw attention to outlier shipments and improve budget planning. In this work 136,140 shipments between 13 personal property shipment hubs from April 2022 through March 2023 with a total cost of $1.6B were analyzed. Shipment cost was predicted using recursive feature elimination on linear regression and XGBoost algorithms, as well as through neural network hyperparameter sweeps. Modeling was repeated after removing 28 features related to shipment hub location and branch of service to examine their influence on algorithm performance. The best model resulted from a neural network hyperparameter sweep on the simple 4-feature dataset. That model contained 2 hidden layers of 250 neurons, possessed a mean absolute error (MAE) of $2162 on the holdout dataset, and had an overfitting measure of 0.2%. This model's performance is a substantial improvement over a trivial mean-prediction model that possessed a MAE of $6856. Additionally, the model R 2 = 0.87 compared favorably to existing work that achieved R2 = 0.73. Models that included 28 features related to shipment hub location and branch of service did not improve performance, showing that those features are insignificant in predicting shipment cost. All OLS regression and XGBoost models showed that the most influential features (in order) were weight, month of shipment, distance shipped, and days in transit.
