Health risk assessment of soil contamination with heavy metals in a child care center co-located in vicinity to small scale industrial area: Case study of Thailand

Environmental impacts of small scale industries are still not well investigated, especially for estates where multiple small scale industries are clustered causing cumulative effects potentially impacting most vulnerable groups. This study aimed to investigate the concentrations of heavy metals (Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Pb, Al, Zn, and Cr) and the metalloid (As) in surface soils near the intensely active small-scale industrial area in Thailand, assess the contamination levels in the co-located child care center, and estimate potential human health risks from exposure to the heavy metals. Surface soil heavy metal(loid) elements were evaluated across a background area, area near main roads, a small-scale industrial area, and a child care centre. The concentrations of Al were found be the highest at all investigation sites, with the most elevated concentrations observed in the small-scale industrial area. The concentration of Pb in the industrial area reached 1176 mg/kg, exceeding the national standard and acceptable limit. Moreover, the contamination level for Cu, Pb, and Zn in the industrial area imply a considerable risk with enrichment factor EF > 40, and geo-accumulation index Igeo ≥5. Heavy metal levels (Ni, Cu, Pb) in the soil near the road and the child care center were similar, suggesting shared contamination sources. Conversely, Al, Zn, As, and Cr in the child care center had slightly higher concentrations than near the road but lower than the small-scale industrial area, indicating potential industrial influence on metal levels within the child care center. The principal component analysis showed Mn and Fe distributed in the background, while As, Pb, Ni, Cu, Al, Zn, and Cr accumulated in the small-scale industrial area. The findings indicate that small-scale industrial activities contribute to elevated levels of heavy metals in the soil, particularly within the child care center, posing significant ingestion risks, especially for children (HI > 1). This paper presents the partial discharge (PD) testing on the plug-in gas-insulated switchgear cable termination taken out of service. The shield electrodes were designed to geometrically electric field control in the area of the insulation screen edge of the cable part. The PD test of the cable termination was performed. In addition, a computed radiography technique with X-ray was also performed to evaluate the mechanical integrity of the supporting spring of the cable termination. The fatigue of the supporting spring was evidenced. Moreover, the cable termination was disassembled and re-assembled to perform the PD test again. The PD characteristics, including PD magnitude, PD inception voltage (PDIV), and phase-resolved PD (PRPD) patterns, were reported. The PD test results revealed that the PDIV was lower than the operating voltage. Besides, the PRPD patterns exhibited internal discharge inside the cable termination. From the PD test results and computed radiographic, it was assumed that they might be caused by discharge in the interface between the stress cone and epoxy insulator.

Chlorophenols (CPs) are priority pollutants which persist in the environment for up to 28 years. The release of Chlorophenol derivatives into aquatic environments poses serious risks to living beings because of their mutagenic, carcinogenic, genotoxic, and teratogenic effects. This study highlights the first application of a Sponge Membrane Bioreactor (Sponge-MBR) for treating 3,4-Dichlorophenol (3,4-DCP)-contaminated wastewater. Herein, a lab-scale Sponge-MBR was conducted to treat 3,4-DCP-contaminated wastewater at various hydraulic retention times (HRTs) ranging from 5 to 15 h in terms of organic matter and 3,4-DCP removal, and microbial community shifts. The sludge characteristics were also performed. Results showed that a rise in HRT at 5, 10 and 15 h increased the removal efficiencies of COD (84 – 94%) and 3,4-DCP (90 – 96%). Under 30-day operation period at optimal HRT (15 h), corresponding to OLR of 2.84 ± 0.18 kg COD·m-3·day-1, the removal efficiencies of both 3,4-DCP and COD were 96% with the average removal rate of 356 ± 83 mg COD·g-SS-1·day-1 and 1.62 ± 0.38 mg 3,4-DCP·g-SS-1·day -1. The attached biomass in sponge media was recorded higher than suspended biomass and contributed 49 – 66% of the total biomass, indicating that the microbial community shifts could degrade organic matter and remove 3,4-DCP. Proteobacteria dominated the microbial community because of their adaptability to environmental changes. The findings derived from this study provide useful perspectives on the application of Sponge-MBR treating 3,4-DCP-contaminated wastewater and offer Sponge-MBR as a potential alternative for treating wastewater contaminated with toxic chemicals. © 2024, The Authors. Plastic waste has become the most significant component of marine debris, while research on traces of marine plastic waste related to the condition of Indonesian waters is still limited. Therefore, this study examines the movement patterns of plastic marine debris in Indonesian waters. Simulations were carried out for one year (2013) using the HAMSOM hydrodynamic and Lagrange trajectory. The approach treated the simulated particles as conservative particles floating at sea. Even though the percentage is small (±16%), Indonesia contributes to transboundary marine debris in the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, and the South China Sea due to the influence of the south equatorial currents moving from north and south of Indonesia. Most of the plastic marine debris remains in Indonesian waters (±80-84%) and moves back and forth due to the influence of the monsoon currents. Therefore, the Java Sea becomes a crossing point and accumulates plastic marine debris. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Technological innovation is a dynamic process that spans the life cycle of an idea, fromscientific research to production. Within this process, there are often a few key innovations that significantly impact a technology's development, and the ability to identify and trace the development of these key innovations comes with a great payoff for researchers and technology managers. In this article, we present a framework for identifying the technology's main evolutionary pathway. What is unique about this framework is that we introduce new indicators that reflect the connectivity and the modularity in the interior citation network to distinguish between the stages of a technology's development. We also show how information about a family of patents can be used to build a comprehensive patent citation network. Finally, we apply integrated approaches of main path analysis (MPA)-namely global MPA and global key-route main analysis-for extracting technological trajectories at different technological stages. We illustrate this approach with dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), a low-cost solar cell belonging to the group of thin-film solar cells, contributing to the remarkable growth in the renewable energy industry. The results show how this approach can trace the main development trajectory of a research field and distinguish key technologies to help decision makers manage the technological stages of their innovation processes more effectively. © 2021 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. Navigating crowds: Reconsidering visitor recreational experience and crowding preference for a forest park in Taiwan

As forest recreational activities gain popularity, the potential for crowding and activity-based conflicts to diminish sustainable recreational quality becomes a critical concern. Consequently, it is vital to understand the factors shaping recreational preferences and conflict perceptions in natural settings. This study selected Xitou Nature Education Area, Taiwan's most frequented forest park, as a case study to investigate complex relationships among visitor demographics, crowding perceptions, and recreational behaviors. Using a questionnaire and choice experiment, the study explored perceptions of crowding and recreational conflicts within Xitou, alongside visitors' willingness to travel further to avoid crowded conditions. The analysis showed that visitor preferences differed significantly across socioeconomic groups, with age playing a substantial role in shaping motivations and behaviors. While overall perceptions of crowding were moderate, visitors aged 65 and older demonstrated notable tolerance for crowds. Despite the park's high visitation, the incidence of recreational conflict was relatively low, with primary disturbances attributed to visitors resting in various locations, park staff, and group game participants. Contrary to expectations, visitors did not exhibit strong willingness to pay to avoid crowding. Instead, results surprisingly suggested a slight preference for increased social interaction within the park, challenging the general assumption that crowding is always viewed negatively. Drawing from visitor perceptions of overcrowding, we propose enhanced regulations and stricter monitoring for designated resting and picnicking areas to elevate the forest recreation experience. Crucially, this study highlights that effective park management must acknowledge and cater to diverse visitor motivations, whether they seek physical activity, social engagement, or solitude. © 2025

Assessing the digital maturity of micro and small enterprises: a focus on an emerging market

Digital transformation is challenging the competitiveness of micro and small enterprises (MSEs), especially in emerging markets where factors that inhibit the growth of these businesses traditionally prevail. This paper aimed to assess the digital maturity of MSEs, using the Brazilian context as a study model. A validated digital transformation framework was applied to 346 companies for data collection and subsequent statistical treatment. Almost 60% of the Brazilian MSEs are at primary levels of digital maturity, with 19.1% being unconscious about the digitization process. Digital maturity was shown to be statistically correlated with innovations (p = 0.000) and business revenue (p = 0.009), suggesting that these factors are facilitators in the MSEs digitization. This paper pointed to the urgency of efforts on the part of companies and policy makers in Brazil to implement actions that can foster behaviors, capabilities, and enablers to digital transformation. These findings can allow in-depth discussions and aligned strategies among emerging economies to point out best practices for companies inserted in markets with similar characteristics and challenges.

Deep learning is revolutionizing the field of medical image segmentation. The U-shaped (Unet) model, with its encoder-decoder architecture and skip connections, has become the dominant architecture for this task. However, variations like Nested-Unet are necessary to address the challenge of adapting network size for datasets of varying scales. This study proposes a novel model based on a multilayer Unet architecture that leverages all output features within nodes of a Nested Unet network. We evaluate the proposed model on four key medical image datasets: electron microscopy (EM), nuclei, polyps (CVC-ClinicDB), and skin lesions. The model achieves impressive Dice scores: 94.08% for EM, 92.68% for nuclei, 87.20% for skin lesions, and 93.02% for the CVC-ClinicDB dataset. These outstanding results demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed model compared to recent advancements in the field. Remarkably, the model achieves this performance while maintaining a size that is half that of a traditional Unet model. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The present research explores the behavioral perspective of the millennial generation on job pursuit intention on Multi-Level Marketing companies through social media. Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and technology Acceptance Model (TAM) are used to assess the job pursuit intention. The data were analyzed by Structural Equation Model (SEM). Analysis reveals the strong influence of attitude on job pursuit intention. The result in this research can be used as the theoretical basis that can be very beneficial for MLM companies, investors, and academicians in marketing.
