Knowledge acquisition is important for innovation and adaptation of organizations including universities. New knowledge and capabilities can be acquired from inside or outside of the institution. There are large body of literature discuss the interaction of universities and the other Triple-helix model's agents, but rarely found and discuss intra helices interactions. This research explores the characteristics of Indonesian academic inventors' knowledge acquisition strategy for patenting in Indonesia. There are two points of view of this research: firstly, the study discusses the knowledge acquisition strategy of Indonesian universities in regard of the knowledge diversity among two collaborating universities and secondly, how is the magnitude of knowledge gaps between two entities influencing the decision for inhouse or out of university *** the data from Sinta, knowledge diversity index is measured using Shannon entropy index of the academic inventor' expertise, university's department, and university's division. The research recognition's gap between two collaborating inventors is measured using the difference of their Scopus' h-indices. The findings show some interesting facts of how academic inventors strategize their collaboration patterns. First, interuniversity collaborations for patenting reveal more diversity on the academic inventors' knowledge than those are in intra-university collaborations. Second, collaborations for patenting with different universities expect better knowledge spill-overs than collaborations within a university. But, this knowledge spill-over only significant at individual level but not at institutional level. It seems that individual recognition is more important than institutional recognition when choosing a collaboration partner. © 2023 IEEE.

In today's highly competitive markets, firms can no longer ensure competitive advantage through the development of highly complex technologies or differentiation based solely on technological and functional factors. Simultaneously, there is growing recognition that design and aesthetic factors can contribute to firms' competitive advantage and profitability. Hence, this study examines the effects of design innovation, captured by formal design registration, on firms' financial performance. We investigated the relationship between technology complexity, design innovation, and firm performance to unveil design innovation's role in exploiting complex technologies. Our main hypothesis is that design innovation positively moderates the negative effect that technology complexity yields on firm performance. We used a unique dataset that aggregates all patent data published by US-headquartered publicly-traded firms to the parent company level. We combined this with firms' financial information and design patent data from the Computat and PATSTAT databases based on their matching firm identifier. Focusing on 1,765 US firms from 1980 to 2015, we calculated firm-level technology complexity based on the structural diversity of technologies. The results confirmed our hypotheses. This study contributes to firms' resource-based view by recognizing design as a strategic resource that firms can utilize to gain a competitive advantage and by discovering design innovation's role in generating economic profits. © 2023 Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited. Hydraulic infrastructures, such as reservoirs and water diversion channels, cause altered streamflow worldwide. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the coupled impacts of reservoir operations and water transfer on downstream streamflow over 42 years (1979–2020) for a tropical river in Vietnam, the Vu Gia Thu Bon (VGTB). We also quantified variations in the multi-sub-basin contributions to the water budget associated with hydraulic structure development. Therefore, a semi-distributed hydrological model, SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool), was developed for the entire VGTB basin considering two plausible scenarios: with a dam and without a dam. In this study, reservoirs substantially affected the streamflow during the 2011–2020 period when 12 cascading hydropower dams were constructed in the Vu Gia sub-basins. The cascading reservoirs across the Vu Gia River reduced the annual average streamflow by 28.1% during this period, whereas their influence was augmented by 13.9% at reaches further downstream. In contrast, the local reservoir and flow diversions created on the Thu Bon River resulted in a 6.5% increase in streamflow. The upstream reservoir operation significantly increased streamflow at the midstream stations by 27.8% compared to the no-dam period. The streamflow decreased in the dry season by 5.6% in the Vu Gia sub-basins and increased by 61.7% in the Thu Bon sub-basins. However, the impacts decreased in the wet season by 41.3% due to the operation of reservoirs, in which Dak Mi 4 had the most significant influence. It was found that the water diverted to the Thu Bon River was governed and reduced by the cascading hydropower dams. Therefore, the operation of 11 reservoirs has partially compensated for the lost water in the Vu Gia sub-basins, to which the Dak Mi 4 plant has transferred 19.7 m3/s (14%). Our findings classify the impact of cascading dams and diversion structures and their interaction with climate change. © 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Despite technological advancements, ensuring aircraft safety remains a challenge, however, Machine learning (ML)-based approaches for predicting future incidents play a crucial role in addressing flight safety. As ML models increase in complexity, their decision-making process becomes less transparent, posing significant challenges to trustworthiness. While simpler models demonstrate lower accuracy, more intricate models such as deep neural networks achieve higher accuracy but sacrifice interpretability. In this study, we enhance trustworthiness in aircraft safety prediction by leveraging a dataset of past accidents and incidents to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future. To achieve this, we apply Random Forest and Extreme Gradient Boosting models to classify different categories of aircraft incidents. Additionally, we apply two powerful explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques: Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME) and Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to provide insights into both local and global predictions made by the models. Notably, our results reveal high accuracy in these predictions while maintaining trustworthiness. This research contributes to the advancement of XAI and offers valuable insights for safety-critical applications and decision support systems. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Perceptions and Pedagogical Responses of Construction Educators During COVID-19

COVID-19 impacted academia across the globe. Given the scale and sudden pandemic onset, limited empirical studies identify the transition’s impact on the US construction educators and education imparted. The study determined the pedagogical responses of educators associated with construction programs within the US during COVID-19 and tested six relationships in the areas of university support, technological access and infrastructure, and educator proficiency improvements. An online survey method was utilized with the instrument emailed to nearly 1,883 educators associated with construction programs/departments across the US. The study used 163 complete responses from US educators based on predefined parameters and identified the baseline operational paradigm (pre-COVID) for construction educators and programs across the US. The study determined the changes after the transition and investigated the impacts of the transition on faculty proficiency with online teaching, existing technological infrastructure, and communication with students. The study identified a moderate relationship between the University’s level of support and educators’ experiences in developing and delivering online materials during the transition. A moderate relationship was also identified between proficiency with online content delivery and total teaching experience. Finally, only a few respondents felt construction education could be delivered entirely online, based on their experiences. © 2022 Associated Schools of Construction.

Universal nanocomposite coating with antifouling and redox capabilities for electrochemical affinity biosensing in complex biological fluids

Electrochemical affinity biosensors have the potential to facilitate the development of multiplexed point-of-care diagnostics in complex biological fluids. However, their commercial viability has been hindered by challenges such as electrode biofouling and the lack of inherent redox properties. To address this unmet need, we have developed a universal nanocomposite coating which is unique in its ability to not only allow oriented conjugation of the biorecognition element but also specific detection directly in complex biological fluids like serum and urine owing to its built-in antifouling and redox capabilities, thus improving suitability for point of care testing. This multifunctional coating comprises a 3D porous crosslinked bovine serum albumin matrix for oriented conjugation and antifouling properties with embedded graphene nanosheets modified with amino-ferrocene for enhanced conductivity and mediator-free biosensing. The coating showed minimal signal degradation despite prolonged exposure to 1% bovine serum albumin, artificial urine and untreated human serum for up to 30 days. To demonstrate its utility, we fabricated and tested proof-of-concept electrochemical immunosensors for bladder cancer protein biomarkers, specifically interleukin-8 (IL-8) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The practical feasibility was highlighted by the excellent sensitivity and specificity observed for IL-8 and VEGF with a limit of detection of 41 pg mL−1 and 67 pg mL−1, respectively. Consequently, this universal nanocomposite-based electrochemical biosensing platform can be extended to the point of care testing of a broad spectrum of biomarkers present in complex biological fluids, thus enabling reliable and early diagnostics. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry

Rail freight transportation is one of the essential modes of freight transport. It is regarded as a cheap means of transportation and is appropriate for moving containers, agricultural items, and bulk materials. However, for a number of reasons, rail freight transit in Thailand has been constrained. One of the most worrisome issues from the perspective of the clients is the ability to track and trace the shipments. Due to the lack of efficient information flow among all parties involved in transportation, customers are unable to track down shipments and determine when they will arrive at their destination. This study used information flow diagrams to show where the information was lacking. As a case study, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) practice is utilized to analyze the issues and make improvement recommendations. Finally, in order to enhance the information flow for rail freight transportation, a traceability system for rail freight has been developed. © 2023 IEEE.

In this article, the Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) has been applied to find an optimal solution for a one-dimensional cutting-stock problem (1D-CSP). It aims to improve the productivity of the Film Roll cutting design as a 1D-CSP using a mathematical program. The proposed model has been implemented and tested in a case study factory. Four factors, namely, 1) the total number of rolls, 2) the percentage of the total scraps, 3) the percentage of utilization, and 4) the processing time;have been examined. The results show that film roll cutting design using the mathematical programs with GSA takes faster processing time than a traditional staff's ruling cutting design. Also, the initial film roll usage lessens by 9 percent and the number of scraps left from cutting decreases by 1.27 percent when compared with the staff's cutting method. Ultimately, the observed cost-saving during our experiment reduces up to 6,500 USD. © 2022 ACM.

The garment industry in Vietnam is one of the country’s strongest industries in the ***,the production process still encounters problems regarding scheduling that does not equate to an optimal *** paper introduces a production scheduling solution that resolves the potential delays and lateness that hinders the production process using integer programming and order allocation with a make-to-order manufacturing viewpoint.A number of constraints were considered in the model and is applied to a real case study of a factory in order to viewhowthe tardiness and latenesswould be affected which resulted in optimizing the scheduling time ***,the constraints considered were order assignments,production time,and tardiness with an objective function which is to minimize the total cost of *** results of the study precisely the overall cost of delay of the orders given to the plant and successfully propose a suitable production schedule that utilizes the most of the plant *** study has shown promising results that would assist plant and production managers in determining an algorithm that they can apply for their production process.

This paper examines the reproducibility of massive information analytics under particular factors. The paper proposes the 'performing Scalable Inference' technique to cope with scalability troubles and to exploit current big statistics platforms for efficient computing and statistics garage of the statistics. In particular, the paper describes how to perform leak-free, parallelizable visible analytics over massive datasets using present extensive records analytics frameworks such as Apache Flink. This method presents an automated manner to execute analytics that preserves reproducibility and the ability to make adjustments without re-running the entire technique. The paper also demonstrates how these analytics may help several real-world use instances, explore affected person cohorts for studies, and develop stratified patient cohorts for hospital therapy. In the end, the paper observes how the proposed method may be exercised within the real world. Actively scalable inference for massive information analytics is pivotal in optimizing decision-making and allocation of assets. Typically, such inferences are made based on information accumulated from numerous sources, databases, unstructured data, and different digital sources. So one can ensure scalability, a complete cloud-primarily based platform has to be hired. This solution will permit the ***, deploying the essential records series and evaluation algorithms are prime here. It could permit the platform to recognize the styles inside the statistics and discover any ability correlations or traits. Additionally, predictive analytics and system mastering strategies may be incorporated to provide insights into the results of the information. In the long run, by leveraging those techniques, the platform can draw efficient inferences and appropriately compare situations in an agile and green way.. © 2023 IEEE.
