极端干旱和食草昆虫可以共同影响植物群落,并且它们的交互作用可能受到干旱模式的影响。然而,目前尚缺乏相关的观测证据。本研究以半干旱草原为研究对象,通过控制实验探讨了不同极端干旱模式与食草昆虫的交互作用对植物群落的影响。实验设置了3种干旱处理,分别为对照(自然降雨量)、慢性干旱(生长季5–8月减少66%降雨量)和急性干旱(6–7月完全无降雨)。在各小区设置了两种食草昆虫处理,分别是有食草昆虫和无食草昆虫。结果表明,食草昆虫和极端干旱及二者的交互作用对物种丰富度无显著影响。食草昆虫缓解了慢性干旱对总盖度的负面影响,而这种缓解作用在急性干旱下较低。食草昆虫对慢性干旱带来的负面效应具有更强的缓解作用,这主要是因为食草昆虫导致慢性干旱下适口性较高的杂类草(具有较低叶片碳含量、叶片干物质含量,以及较低叶片淀粉、钙、镁、锰含量)的大幅降低,进而降低了禾草的负面效应。上述结果表明,干旱和食草昆虫的交互作用受干旱模式的影响。通过调节植物的适口性来控制食草昆虫的采食行为,可以减轻极端干旱对草原生态系统的影响。

Mass transit is a key transport strategy in helping cities decarbonize, adapt to an era of rapid climate change, and guide rapid urbanization. Central to transit planning is the ability to accurately estimate demand for an effective, efficient, and equitable deployment of infrastructures and services. Instrumental to this effort is direct-demand modelling (DDM), which has evolved and become more nuanced in predicting ridership at station-level and station-to-station levels and in shedding light on key ridership and performance determinants. Local and Metropolitan accessibility as predictors of transit patronage has been shown significant in recent DDM studies at station-level, with an apparent synergistic relationship. This, however, has not been explored on a station-to-station passenger flow level. In several ways this is a more valid unit of analysis for rail ridership studies as it captures critical factors between and at both ends of the trip that are experienced by the transit rider. It is also well documented that the sensitivity of transit patrons to key ridership determinants varies across income levels. In some jurisdictions income level strongly correlates with race/ethnicity and/or class, due in part to historical legacies of classism and/or racism. Segregation because of class and/or race prejudice, often found in US cities, might yield spatial heterogeneity in whole-network DDM model parameters and introduce bias that could potentially mislead transit analysts, policy makers, and systemwide effectiveness. We explored and tested these possibilities and considered modelling and policy implications as we leveraged Atlanta’s legacy of racial and income segregation in studying MARTA’s Origin-Destination (O-D) passenger flow patterns. Surakarta City is intersected by three major rivers which could become the city's source of clean water. However, pollution of the rivers makes processing this surface water a necessity to create clean water for domestic uses. This study aims to establish a river typology based on the riverbank characteristics and the potential of the surface water to be discharge into clean water. This paper uses spatial analysis to develop typologies and describe the riverbanks characteristics by using the Pepe River in Surakarta as a case study. This is one of the polluted major rivers that flow through Surakarta City. The study found that the Pepe's riverbanks are dominated by residential and commercial areas. Due to the lack of waste infrastructure, the community (household and small-scale industries) disposes its untreated wastewater directly into the drainage channel. With regard to this problem, five river typologies were established to function as the basis of recommendations to improve the water quality of the river so that it can be used as an urban clean water source. The result shows that all typologies major problems are the lack of wastewater management. The study proposes interventions in waste management, wastewater treatment system, and land use control. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Site-focused hydrogeological studies are often touted as a fundamental requirement for the effective conservation of groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs) as they unveil important detail about processes that threaten groundwater and connected ecosystems. We used a hydrogeochemical and isotopic approach to characterise groundwater source, movement and recharge in a highly complex coastal dune system, the Cooloola Sand Mass in south-east Queensland, Australia. For a relatively small area (620 km2), Cooloola contains a large variety of GDEs including wetlands, fens, lakes, and streams. GDEs within Cooloola are exposed to a myriad of threats including over-abstraction, saltwater intrusion and climatic drying. Conservation approaches are broadly applied to these valuable habitats, where greater hydrological understanding could inform management actions. Major ions, trace elements, stable water isotopes (δ18O and δ2H) from 83 sites, as well as isotope tracers (3H and 14C) from 12 sites were used to characterise groundwater sources, movement, recharge processes and estimate mean residence time (MRT). Estimated MRTs ranged from 12 to 100 years, with recharge of the regional aquifer reliant on high monthly rainfall totals (>150 – 200 mm) associated with La Niña phases across eastern Australia. Results highlight the complex nature of the groundwater system with GDEs depending solely on the regional aquifer, shallow perched aquifers, or a mix of both sources. Each of these sources are exposed to different threats depending on recharge mechanisms, coastal proximity and surrounding land-use. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

评估极端干旱对优势植物物种光合速率(Pn)的影响对于我们理解极端干旱影响生态系统功能的机制至关重要。极端干旱可能由降雨量减少或降雨频率减少造成。这两种不同模式的极端干旱可能造成不同的影响。此外,不同草原类型可能对这两种极端干旱模式表现出不同的敏感性。然而,目前尚不清楚这两种极端干旱模式对草原优势植物物种Pn的影响有何差异,以及在不同草原类型这两种不同模式的极端干旱的效应是否改变。为此,我们于2014年在内蒙古草原两个不同类型的草原(荒漠草原vs.典型草原)站点各进行了一项多年的极端干旱(CHR:将生长季期间每次降雨事件的降雨量减少66%***:完全排除生长季内一段较短时间的降水)模拟实验。于2017年的7月和8月,我们在这两个草原站点各测量了两种优势物种的Pn。结果发现,CHR和INT均显著降低了优势物种的Pn。无论草原类型如何,INT对Pn造成的负面影响都更大。在荒漠草原,极端干旱对Pn的负面影响普遍大于典型草原,尤其是对于CHR处理下的羊草(Leymus chinensis)。这些结果表明,与降雨量减少相比,降雨频率减少所引起的极端干旱对Pn的负面影响更大。草地类型可能会改变极端干旱模式效应的程度,但不会改变其方向。这些发现强调了应对未来极端干旱的草原生态系统管理应考虑极端干旱模式和草地类型的影响。

Understanding informal mechanisms in integrated urban water management (IUWM): Evidence from Makassar, Indonesia

A paradigm shift from segregated water management to an integrated approach is receiving increasing attention since fragmentation affects urban water availability. Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM) may enhance coordination between policies and actors, thereby establishing internal and external coherence for the efficient use of water resources, equitable and universal water distribution, and environmental conservation. However, studies on understanding urban water integration tend to focus on formal and structural forms without exploring informal processes as a broader perspective to achieve water sustainability. Meanwhile, non-prescribed, non-official rules and actions can be fundamental to overcoming fragmentation in urban water management. Therefore, this study explores informal mechanisms for pursuing an integrated approach to urban water management in Indonesia. Makassar is selected as a case study because of its variety of urban water issues and rich context of informal actions. The case offers lessons for other cities in Indonesia and beyond. We ask the following main questions: What informal actions facilitate internal and external integration in urban water management in Makassar, and how do these informal mechanisms affect Integrated Urban Water Management? The methodology comprises a qualitative content analysis to identify the mechanisms by analysing policy documents, reports, newspaper articles, social media, and previous studies. Semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders confirm and explain the content analysis results. The study finds that Makassar's IUWM approach extends beyond aligning formal mechanisms: informal processes determine water use conflicts, inadequate water access, and water scarcity. It is established that informal processes occur through Tudang sipulung, Ngopi and Silaturahmi for establishing conversation places, and Dana bergulir and Gotong-royong for fostering community contributions. Assessing Flood Mitigation Preparedness in Nebraska's Rural Communities Through Local Comprehensive Plans

In the United States, research to date has primarily focused on mitigating urban coastal flood risks, with limited knowledge available on the planning capacity and effectiveness of flood mitigation in rural inland areas. This study addresses the gap by analyzing 162 publicly accessible local comprehensive plans from local jurisdictions across Nebraska, evaluating their preparedness for managing floodplains and reducing flood risks. The research examines how well Nebraska's communities, particularly rural ones, are prepared for flood risk reduction and whether they have adopted more proactive measures following the historic 2019 flood disaster. The evaluation criteria focus on three key areas: vulnerability assessment, policy toolkits, and coordination mechanisms. The findings reveal a mix of strengths and weaknesses across these categories. Overall, vulnerability assessment is generally low, with a score of 26.7%, indicating limited awareness and inadequate use of federal and state floodplain datasets to support rural planning. Policy toolkits, scoring 58.7%, are moderately available, suggesting that local communities have taken broader steps to address local flood risk reduction. Coordination mechanisms are relatively well-established within local planning frameworks as found in 74.5% of the plans, showing promise for collaborative flood risk reduction efforts. In rural communities, particularly, the quality of plans is lower compared to urban communities. However, following the 2019 floods, rural communities have shown some improvement in enhancing floodplain management and planning. This research contributes to resilience planning theories, particularly for resource-limited and disadvantaged rural communities in the United States. © 2025 The Author(s). Global soybean trade intensifies the impacts of dietary transition on human mobility

Soybeans have experienced massive growth in trade due to diet transitions. Large imports reduce expected returns for soybean growers in importer countries, influencing occupational choices and potentially facilitating population mobility, though the distant correlation's impact remains unclear. We develop a framework integrating diet dynamics, trade indexes, and human mobility. We found: (1) dietary transition promotes human mobility through global soybean trade;(2) rural areas contribute far less than urban areas, illustrating decoupling between rural regions and international trade;(3) enhancing rural-trade coupling could improve dietary and crop flow in rural regions;(4) the study provides a new perspective on how dietary transition promotes human mobility. These findings help policymakers identify soybean trade strategies for socioeconomic development and formulate interventions to optimize population distribution. By addressing rural decoupling, we emphasize aligning rural areas with global trade to mitigate mobility pressures and socioeconomic disparities, without altering original terms. © 2025 The Authors

Climate literacy, critical for understanding both the individual's impact on climate and the consequential effects on society and the biosphere, is comprehensively examined in this study through scientometric analysis. Spanning research from 1981 to 2024 and utilizing the Web of Science database, this study maps the evolution of publication trends, pinpoints central themes, and identifies pivotal publications within the domain. Leveraging advanced visualization tools like CiteSpace, the research employs dual-map overlays and document co-citation analysis to uncover the intricate web of interconnections among scholarly works. Findings highlight a significant surge in publications after 2015, mirroring the escalating global consciousness of climate-related issues. Predominant research clusters identified include “bad news,” “mental health,” and "farmers' perceptions,” showcasing the field's thematic diversity. These insights emphasize the indispensable role of interdisciplinary methods in advancing public knowledge and active participation in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts, fostering a well-informed community poised to address environmental challenges. © 2024

Assessment of Decontamination and Reuse of Disposable Filter Funnels Used in Microbiological Water Quality Tests

To monitor safely managed drinking water services, an increasing number of countries have integrated water quality testing for Escherichia coli into nationally-representative household surveys such as the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS). However, plastic waste generated during such water quality testing programs, mostly through the use of pre-sterilized disposable materials, is non-negligible. The objective of this study was to evaluate several re-use protocols for disposable filter funnels used by the MICS water quality test kits. Decontamination and re-use protocols were assessed in centralized laboratory and decentralized field settings and neither yielded positive results. Re-use of 100 mL sterile funnels decontaminated with an alcohol wipe resulted in a higher incidence of false positive results (i.e., positive contamination when processing sterile water), both in the laboratory and field;therefore, a higher proportion of positives tests can be expected if these components are re-used. Further improvements to the decontamination technique and training are needed before material re-use can be reliably adopted. Autoclaving the funnels for re-use is feasible, provided that there is capacity to re-package and distribute funnels in a sterile manner. © The Author(s) 2021.
