Productivity and feed management strategies of sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) at the special purpose forest area (KHDTK) of Aek Nauli

The availability of feed plants is one of the most important components in improving the breeding ability of sambar deer in captivity. Planting program and productivity assessment of feed plants are necessary to ensure the availability of feed plants for deer, including deer management demonstration plot at Aek Nauli KHDTK. This study was aimed to observe the productivity and nutritional contents of sambar deer feed plants in Aek Nauli KHDTK. This study was performed at the deer feed plant plot. Sampling activities were conducted in the 1x1 m2 plot (for grass) and 2 x 2 m2 (for non-grass such as shrubs and herbs). The results showed that the productivity of 6 feed plants is about 51,56 kg day-1 (fresh weight) or 19,52 kg day-1 (dry weight); indicating that these plants meet the needs of 5 deer which are requiring 38.82 kg feed day-1. The average productivity of feed plants in the dominant dry days was about 33,342.75 kg ha-1 year-1 (fresh weight) or 14,977.17 kg ha-1 year-1 (dry weight). The productivity of feed plants in the dominant rainy days was about 60,687.33 kg ha-1 year-1 (fresh weight) or 20,287.92 kg ha-1 year-1 (dry weight). Nutritional contents of feed plants are water content (56.3-66.0%), protein (0.037-0.156%), ash content (5.891-7.199%), fat content (1.751-10.089%), and carbohydrate (21.597-33.932%). Required feed management strategies are regular weeding, block division, rotational harvesting system, fertilizing, watering (during the dry season), and providing additional feeds and supplements such as Pennisetum purpureum, Calliandra callothyrsus, Artocarpus heterophyllus, and Manihot utilissima.

Ambon City, located in Maluku Island, experiences flood disaster every year. It has been considered that the flood in this city occurs more often compared to the other city in the same island. One of the river that is related to the flood occurrence in Ambon City is Wai Batu Merah River. This study aims to find appropriate structural measurement by using modelling simulation to control flood disaster in Wai Batu Merah River Basin. The modelling used HEC-RAS 5.0.7 software for coupled 1D and 2D hydraulic simulation. Flood discharge was calibrated by applying flood event in 2013. The SCS method was selected to generate flood hydrograph by using synthetic method. The records of water depth in the flood event were compared to the hydraulic model results and it showed good agreement. Based on the model, flood control scenarios i.e. normalization and dike were exercised for 25 year return period as required by government regulation. The combination of both scenarios can manage flood in Wai Batu Merah River Basin effectively. However it might need high cost to construct the structures. Therefore, it is necessary to have priority between the scenarios.

Ambitious initiatives to conserve large swaths of land and water by 2030 have recently gained traction to address emerging socio-environmental challenges in the face of rapid global change. The successful formation of protected areas to help accomplish this goal hinges on management strategies that are inclusive of local voices and that recognize the array of values held by surrounding communities. Group-based processes that involve deliberation about protected area management—particularly social learning— hold promise to advance inclusive conservation by identifying and creating a shared understanding of the landscape. However, few studies have empirically investigated how the value basis of stakeholder deliberation changes over time in relation to social learning. This study provided a novel platform for local stakeholders from communities in the Denali region of Interior Alaska to deliberate on protected area management in ways that shifted their value orientations. In particular, we used a pre-test post-test experimental design involving mixed methods to measure how different types of values changed as a result of social learning through an online discussion forum. We found evidence that social learning: 1) activated and formed values that were previously hidden through building a relational understanding of others, and 2) shifted values that spanned three levels of psychological stability. As hypothesized, social values that represented expressed preferences for landscape change were most likely to shift in association with social learning, whereas both individual and eudaimonic values required deeper levels of learning situated within a regional context. Overall, this longitudinal study highlights how social learning facilitated through deliberation presents opportunities to align values across stakeholder groups and thus incorporate diverse viewpoints into protected area management and decision-making about global environmental change. © 2022, The Authors. Indonesia is recognized as a biodiversity hotspot within the Coral Triangle and is rapidly expanding its network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). MPAs are critical tools for conserving coral reefs, and MPA management plans serve as the foundational guidelines for conservation. Their effectiveness depends partly on how adequately coral reefs' stressors are addressed and integrated into actionable mitigation strategies. This study assessed the inclusion of stressors in current government-issued Indonesian MPA management plans. We analyzed the inclusion of stressor words within the comprehensive management plans and reviewed the action plan. By 2022, only 20 % of Indonesian MPAs had comprehensive management plans, comprising an introduction, zoning plan, and action plan. We found that most plans address stressors related to fishing. In contrast, less than one-third of the plans address land-based stressors, with nutrient pollution and plastic waste largely overlooked. While climate change was identified in about half of the plans, specific climate change impacts, such as rising sea surface temperature, were identified in only very few plans. Most management plans were broad, non-specific, and highly similar across locations, with stressors identified in the introduction rarely integrated into zoning and action plan sections, which may limit site-specific conservation efforts. Nevertheless, some plans showed a more targeted approach by addressing local stressors and proposing actionable responses. This study highlights the need for more site-specific and adaptive MPA plans. It offers a checklist to assess stressors in future Indonesian MPA management plan development, guiding increased responsiveness to evolving environmental challenges. © 2025

The 2018 Sulawesi Earthquake and Tsunami severely damaged the coast of Palu City, Indonesia. The city did not have adequate mitigation system for a tsunami. A tsunami inundation map is required. This study based on modelling four scenarios of possible earthquake-induced tsunami. The earthquakes were identified based on data from PUSGEN. The generated tsunami wave is simulated using Delft3D and Delft Dashboard. The wave propagation is modeled using nesting method. This method couples different grid sizes. Nesting process helps to ensure the model efficiency and accuracy. The results provide the maximum inundation map along the Palu City Coast. These results can be used by decision maker to develop the coastal zone management of Palu City. Furthermore, they can be utilized to propose a disaster risk management plan.

With advancements in the science of detection and attribution studies, the influence of climate change over many events has now been quantified. Because of the rapidly increasing temperatures, vulnerable populations (adults older than 65 years, and children younger than one year of age) were exposed to 3·7 billion more heatwave days in 2021 than annually in 1986–2005 (indicator 1.1.2), and heat-related deaths increased by 68% between 2000–04 and 2017–21 (indicator 1.1.5), a death toll that was significantly exacerbated by the confluence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the local cooling and overall health benefits of urban greenspaces, only 277 (27%) of 1038 global urban centres were at least moderately green in 2021 (indicator 2.2.3), and the number of households with air conditioning increased by 66% from 2000 to 2020, a maladaptive response that worsens the energy crisis and further increases urban heat, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. The SARS-CoV-2 virus has caused a public health crisis globally. Against the backdrop of global resilience, studies have demonstrated the therapeutic value of home gardening as a measure to strengthen human health. However, there is a lack of comparative studies on its benefits across countries. Studies need to examine the role of home gardening in improving public health in various societies to understand and encourage this practice broadly and effectively. We chose Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam as case studies, which have suffered substantial pandemic impacts, with millions of infections and thousands of deaths. We explored and compared the perceptions of people on home gardening and its health benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted online surveys in three countries between May 1 and September 30, 2022, with a total of 1172 participants. Data were collated on perceived pandemic stress, challenges and solutions in gardening, home gardening intentions, and mental and physical health benefits. In these countries, we found that perceived pandemic stress positively affects home gardening intentions, whereby the motivation of Vietnamese people is the highest. Challenges hinder gardening intentions, while the solutions only positively affect gardening intentions in Taiwan and Vietnam. Home gardening intentions positively affect mental and physical health, whereby there are higher mental health benefits in Taiwanese people than in Thai people. Our findings potentially support public health recovery and promote healthy lifestyles during the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2023, The Author(s).

Characteristics and community perception on mitigation of Human-Tapanuli Orangutans conflict around Dolok Sipirok Natural Reserve, South Tapanuli

The frequency of human-tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis) conflict has been increased with the widespread on degradation and fragmentation at Batangtoru Forest, South Tapanuli Regency. Orangutans often come on community lands to look for food, especially while the durian fruit season. This study aims to obtain information on socio-economic characteristics and public perception index to mitigate on human-tapanuli orangutan conflict around the Dolok Sipirok Nature Reserve, South Tapanuli Regency. Data was collected using a questionnaire distribution, interviews and descriptive observations, starting from October 2019 to January 2020. Respondents were selected by purposively sampling method, i.e. people had met and interacted with orangutans as many as 61 respondents from three villages. Data analyzed using frequency tables, likers scale and spearman rank correlation. The results showed that the community is Muslim majority, productive age, education below senior high school, farmers and income below IDR. 4,000,000. The public perception has declared orangutans as animals that consume community plants. They will drive away the orangutans found in processed land. The perception of conflict mitigation has strongly agreed with the program that must be done including providing compensation for losses, increasing patrol programs, developing local wisdom and building corridors in state forests. The characteristics were a significant (α <0.01) influence on the perception index assessment i.e. the level of education, household member and family income.

The results of the study showed that Sembilang Dangku Landscape had known two types of soil namely peat soil and mineral soil. Detail information for peat soil in this area namely Typic Haplosaprists and Typic Haplohemists meanwhile, for mineral soil, there are two types of soil that have been identified at these locations namely Inceptisols (Typic Endoaquepts and Typic Humaquepts) and Entisols (Typic Sulfaquents). This study aimed to analyze the production of oil palm plantations in lowland areas on marginal land. This research was conducted at six locations of oil palm plantations in Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra province. The methods used were descriptive quantitative and qualitative calculation of FFB (fresh fruit bunches) production that compared the standard potential production of the Palm Oil Research Center (PPKS referred in Indonesia). The yield of FFB oil palm productivity (ton/ha) on marginal land showed that Typic Haplosaprists, Typic Haplohemists and Typic Endoaquepts, Typic Humaquepts did not have a significant effect because yield from plantation management produced FFB production oil palm was quite good. The effect that has quite a different production is Entisols (Typic Sulfaquents) or L6 locations. Based on this research, the type of soil is a factor that greatly affects the productivity of oil palm. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Utilization of critical land as woody biomass plantations need to be supported by information on the potential of critical land. The objective of this research was to delineate a critical land using remote sensing and GIS techniques combined with Analytical Hierarchy Process method. The parameters used were land use/cover, slope, rainfall erosivity, tolerable soil erosion, soil erodibility, land management, and land productivity. The Analytical Hierarchy Process method was used to provide the weight of each parameter. Land use/cover map was interpreted from SPOT-7 satellite imageries acquired in 2017. The other parameter maps were built based on reference maps, secondary and field data collection as well as soil sample analysis. The resulted map showed that 32.7% area of East Lombok Regency was categorized as a critical area. Based on the land status, the critical land area located in the State Forest was smaller (42%) than on the Area for Other Utilization (58%). Utilization of critical land as woody biomass plantation should be prioritized on the shrub-covered land using community forest scheme, while for the area of State Forest, the plantation can be only planted in the production forest area applying industrial plantation forest or community plantation forest scheme. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
