The critically endangered West Pacific Ocean subpopulation of the leatherback turtles has faced a significant population decline in the past decades. One of the reasons for this is the loss of nesting habitats in the region. In this pilot study, turtle nesting habitats are remotely monitored employing satellite imageries. This methodology has been used to investigate the extent of habitat loss in the Kamiali wildlife management area along the Huon coast in Papua New Guinea which serves as a major hotspot for the leatherback turtles. Moreover, the conservation of this turtle species is increasingly at risk due to the intensification of community-level conflicts and paucity of donors;data collection endeavors along the Huon coast have been halted since 2014. Using Landsat 8 satellite images for the period 2013 to 2019, a 22.44 % (0.179 km2) decrease in sandy beach areas is noticable, resulting primarily from shrubs-mixed vegetation expansion and coastal squeeze following erosion. The research results highlight the urgency to revamp turtle conservation and data collection initiatives and emphasize the key role remote sensing can play in turtle habitat monitoring, particularly in areas experiencing a conflict of conservational interests. Based on the observations, the study propose four urgent technology-oriented measures-(i) revamping data collection strategies, (ii) developing turtle nesting sensitivity maps, (iii) surveying nesting habitats using drones, and (iv) investigating the influence of logging activities-to enhance leatherback turtle conservation efforts in the Kamiali region, that are expected to have wider applications across the globe especially in the West Pacific and to other sea turtle species. © 2021 IEEE.

One mechanism proposed to explain high species diversity in tropical systems is strong negative conspecific density dependence (CDD), which reduces recruitment of juveniles in proximity to conspecific adult plants. Although evidence shows that plant-specific soil pathogens can drive negative CDD, trees also form key mutualisms with mycorrhizal fungi, which may counteract these effects. Across 43 large-scale forest plots worldwide, we tested whether ectomycorrhizal tree species exhibit weaker negative CDD than arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species. We further tested for conmycorrhizal density dependence (CMDD) to test for benefit from shared mutualists. We found that the strength of CDD varies systematically with mycorrhizal type, with ectomycorrhizal tree species exhibiting higher sapling densities with increasing adult densities than arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species. Moreover, we found evidence of positive CMDD for tree species of both mycorrhizal types. Collectively, these findings indicate that mycorrhizal interactions likely play a foundational role in global forest diversity patterns and structure. © 2023, Springer Nature Limited.

The study aims to analyze the land-use changes from paddy fields to non-paddy fields, examine the future sustainability of the paddy fields, and analyze the impact of the paddy fields' conversion on the socio-economic and environmental aspects. The study was carried out at Ciampea Sub-district, Bogor Regency, West Java Province. Conversion of paddy fields was analyzed through visual interpretation of Ciampea Sub-district 2016 and 2019 imageries using GIS software of ArcGIS 10.5. and later was used to measure the average annual conversion rate and predict the future sustainability of the paddy field, and to measure the impact of the land conversion using the economic valuation method (financial analysis and replacement cost approach). The results showed that, first, during the year of 2016 to 2019, the paddy fields in Ciampea Sub-district transformations were dominated by settlements. Second, the conversion rate was relatively high, by 51.45 hectares per annum. Third, the impact of reduction of paddy field area was relatively high: a potential loss of 3,098.06 tons of food crop production. Meanwhile, the cost for replacing the function of flood, erosion, and sedimentation control reached IDR 257.68 billion.

A Spatial decision support system (SDSS) is an integrated computer-based system that can be used to support decision makers in addressing spatial problems through iterative approaches with functionality for handling both of spatial and non-spatial databases, analytical modelling capabilities, decision making support, as well as effective data and information presentation utilities. Previously, many studies have proven that this kind of decision support system is also useful in addressing wildfires problems effectively. Considering this technological advancement, this study is primarily aimed to develop a peatland fires management system by implementing the concept of SDSS. Developed system in this study is consisting of two separate sub-system, namely prediction and prevention sub-systems, which are then integrated into one whole working scheme using loose coupling method. Overall, it can be concluded that such integrated prediction and prevention system has various advantages. Firstly, it is useful to establish rapid coordination among involved stakeholders in deciding suitable approaches to prevent peatland fires. Secondly, promoting a more pro-active fire management system that is relied on predict-and-prevent approach. Thirdly, avoiding further delay on fires prevention while minimizing error in resources allocation. Lastly, this kind of decision support system can be rapidly updated following on-going technological and field situation developments.

Inland fisheries are a significant sector especially for those living in villages as a source of both nutritious yet affordable food and the community's income. The increasing pressure on inland fisheries causes a reduction in the amount and size of fish caught as well as the rarity of some species of fish. One measure taken to intensify inland fisheries is by implementing inland aquaculture. Unlike any other controlled condition aquaculture, inland aquaculture is done with adjustment to the water condition. This study aims to describe characteristics of several inland waters of Ogan Komering Ilir regency, South Sumatera Province, Indonesia in particular as well as to provide a guideline for inland aquaculture based on the characteristics of the waters. The description is done by reviewing a number of academic journals and publications which are verified by academics and expert judgment. The main points in describing inland fisheries are water typology, fish resource, water quality, and social community characteristics. After analyzing the inputs from inland fishery characteristics based on the 4 main points previously mentioned, a guideline is created for conducting fish farming in terms of farming methods, seed selection, seed stocking criteria, and institutional arrangement in fish ownership issue.

The rate of population growth and the increase in food needs for consumption have made the need for paddy fields higher. Moreover, the concerns about food security and food sovereignty have become critical issues. The high demand for land utilization has caused pressure on paddy fields in the Citarum watershed. The objective of this study is to build a model for maintaining paddy fields in the Citarum watershed. The study was conducted from June to September 2015. The method of this research is a modelling using system dynamics approach by simulating time series data. From the simulation, it can be concluded that the rate of conversion of paddy fields will still be high if there is no specific policy in its protection. This fact can be seen from various scenario conditions, either in existing circumstances, in the optimistic scenario, as well as in a moderate scenario. The strategy that can be done is that paddy fields should be specially protected or owned by the government to minimize the rate of conversion.
