Culture-Based Fisheries in Rawa lebak lebung, South Sumatera, is it Applicable?

Rawa lebak lebung is a part of inland waters in South Sumatera which mostly used as the auction object, by granting a monopoly on fishing to Pengemin (auction winners). As an open-access resource, allowing a monopoly is considered to prevent conflicts of resource struggle and overuse. But in practice, the auction is precisely the cause of overexploitation, and the local community loses access to fishing. This study is intended to describe the suitability of Culture-Based Fisheries (CBF) implementation in the rawa lebak lebung in Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) Regency based on practices under the auction regime, water quality, and aquatic biota communities. Increasing fish stocks and community involvement with CBF possible to develop with some adapted. This concept is carried out by spreading fish seeds to grow and harvest following fishing seasons, where local communities play an essential role. The analysis shows that the stock enhancement can be carried out in a limited way of the seed stocked. Poor swamp water quality requires the process of adaptation of seeds to be stocked. Community involvement is carried out by managing hatcheries, whose production is purchased by pengemin as an obligation to restore the environment.

Species’ traits and environmental conditions determine the abundance of tree species across the globe. The extent to which traits of dominant and rare tree species differ remains untested across a broad environmental range, limiting our understanding of how species traits and the environment shape forest functional composition. We use a global dataset of tree composition of >22,000 forest plots and 11 traits of 1663 tree species to ask how locally dominant and rare species differ in their trait values, and how these differences are driven by climatic gradients in temperature and water availability in forest biomes across the globe. We find three consistent trait differences between locally dominant and rare species across all biomes;dominant species are taller, have softer wood and higher loading on the multivariate stem strategy axis (related to narrow tracheids and thick bark). The difference between traits of dominant and rare species is more strongly driven by temperature compared to water availability, as temperature might affect a larger number of traits. Therefore, climate change driven global temperature rise may have a strong effect on trait differences between dominant and rare tree species and may lead to changes in species abundances and therefore strong community reassembly. © The Author(s) 2025.

Traditional data sources are not sufficient for measuring the United Nations Sustainable development Goals. New and non-traditional sources of data are required. Citizen science is an emerging example of a non-traditional data source that is already making a contribution. In this Perspective, we present a roadmap that outlines how citizen science can be integrated into the formal Sustainable development Goals reporting mechanisms. Success will require leadership from the United Nations, innovation from National Statistical Offices and focus from the citizen-science community to identify the indicators for which citizen science can make a real contribution.

An essential prerequisite to safeguard pollinator species is characterisation of the multifaceted diversity of crop pollinators, and identification of the drivers of pollinator community changes across biogeographical gradients. The extent to which intensive agriculture is associated with the homogenisation of biological communities at large spatial scales remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the relationships between different drivers of bee diversity for 644 species/morphospecies in 177 commercial apple orchards across 33 countries and four global biogeographic zones. We provide evidence for a significant community-level taxonomic dissimilarity between zones, driven by biogeography. Despite taxonomic dissimilarity, species across zones belong to similar higher-level phylogenetic groups with similar combinations of ecological and behavioural traits (i.e. functional traits). This phylogenetic and functional clustering is likely due to habitat filtering caused by a perennial monoculture system managed intensively for crop production. Bee communities visiting apple orchards were largely dominated by honey bee species, while other managed/manageable and wild species were collected in lower numbers. Overall, our study sheds light on the importance of large-scale analyses contributing to the emerging fields of functional and phylogenetic biogeography, which can be related to ecosystem function to promote biodiversity as a key asset in agroecosystems in the face of global change pressures. © 2023, The Authors. Biotic interactions are expected to influence species' responses to global changes, but they are rarely considered across broad spatial extents. Abiotic factors are thought to operate at larger spatial scales, while biotic factors, such as species interactions, are considered more important at local scales within communities, in part because of the knowledge gap on species interactions at large spatial scales (i.e., the Eltonian shortfall). We assessed, at a continental scale, (i) the importance of biotic interactions, through food webs, on species distributions, and (ii) how biotic interactions under scenarios of climate and land-use change may affect the distribution of the brown bear (Ursus arctos). We built a highly detailed, spatially dynamic, and empirically sampled food web based on the energy contribution of 276 brown bear food species from different taxa (plants, vertebrates, and invertebrates) and their ensemble habitat models at high resolution across Europe. Then, combining energy contribution and predicted habitat of food species, we modelled energy contribution across space and included these layers within Bayesian-based models of the brown bear distribution in Europe. The inclusion of biotic interactions considerably improved our understanding of brown bear distribution at large (continental) scales compared with Bayesian models including only abiotic factors (climate and land use). Predicted future range shifts, which included changes in the distribution of food species, varied greatly when considering various scenarios of change in biotic factors, providing a warning that future indirect climate and land-use change are likely to have strong but highly uncertain impacts on species biogeography. Formulating peatland fire prevention strategy in Bengkalis Regency: An application of analytical hierarchy process

Bengkalis has been widely known as one of the regencies in Riau Province that is dominated by peatland. Nevertheless, this regency is also known for its almost annually recurring peatland fires. Considering this issue, this study primarily aims to formulate peatland fire prevention strategy in Bengkalis Regency. This study was conducted through the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology. While having a high degree of consistency ratio among involved experts, the results of this study revealed that shrubs was the type of peatland cover that must be given priority attention. Meanwhile, the key criteria in implementing peatland fire prevention was budget availability. Besides, local governmental institution that should be prioritized to receive authority as the coordinator for peatland fires prevention was the Regional Disaster and Fire-Fighting Agency (BPBD-Damkar). In the meantime, sequentially, it seems that the best prevention alternative was to build and / or repair existing canal blocks; strengthened by the implementation of regional integrated security patrols; constructing and/or repairing of water reservoirs and boreholes; as well as the provision of zero-burning incentives to traditional cultivators. These findings are useful to support the local government in preparing a more proactive prevention approach in addressing peatland fires.

The recent Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) sets ambitious goals but no clear pathway for how zero loss of important biodiversity areas and halting human-induced extinction of threatened species will be achieved. We assembled a multi-taxa tracking dataset (11 million geopositions from 15,845 tracked individuals across 121 species) to provide a global assessment of space use of highly mobile marine megafauna, showing that 63% of the area that they cover is used 80% of the time as important migratory corridors or residence areas. The GBF 30% threshold (Target 3) will be insufficient for marine megafauna's effective conservation, leaving important areas exposed to major anthropogenic threats. Coupling area protection with mitigation strategies (e.g., fishing regulation, wildlife-traffic separation) will be essential to reach international goals and conserve biodiversity.

Assessing scenic beauty of culture-based landscapes in North Toraja Regency

Toraja is a popular tourist destination in the sacred highlands of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It has been widely known for its unique traditional culture. The combination of nature, agriculture, and culture is landscape beauty as area potential tourism. However, the management of tourism objects and attractions has not given much attention to the quality of the landscape aesthetic. This paper shows the results of scenic beauty assessment of culture-based landscape in the North Toraja Regency. Field survey and analysis using Scenic Beauty Estimation (SBE) were used as the method of this research. The results showed that the SBE score represented by 40 landscape pictures ranged from -42 to 234. The landscape that achieved the highest SBE score of 234 was Lolai To'tombi, while the landscape with the lowest SBE score of -42 was Limbong Agrotourism. The preferred landscape has a unique characteristic, in order, having a harmonious blend of hardscape elements and vegetation, and the presence of green open space or blue sky in the landscape. Managers of tourism objects need to consider the character of the landscape in developing tourism objects and attractions to improve the quality of landscape beauty.
