This article provides a survey and critique of several arguments advanced to support the claim that gentrification is unjust. I describe eight distinct injustices have been linked to gentrification: deprivation, estrangement, erasure, domination, censure, exploitation, disrespect, and marginalization. Scholars seeking to provide a comprehensive account of the injustices associated with gentrification must contend with the plural and contested nature of gentrification-induced injustice, the pervasiveness of domination as a distinct form of injustice and a component or contributor to other forms of injustice, and the difficulty of accommodating individual and collective forms of injustice within a single conception of justice. Although landlords, property owners, developers, and gentrifiers share blame for inflicting the harms of gentrification, states ultimately have the moral obligation to rectify the injustices of gentrification through the establishment of policies and institutions that discourage unjust actions.

StarGAN Model to Translate Interior Style Trained with Virtual Images

Interest in personalized interior design remains robust, yet it involves time-consuming processes such as 3D modeling and rendering. The image-to-image translation model, an offshoot of deep learning technology, offers the potential to simplify design tasks by transforming the styles of indoor scene images. Even with the challenges of acquiring an interior image dataset before the model development, combining virtual images can help circumvent inconsistency and copyright restrictions. In our research, we synthesized virtual images of indoor scenes in various interior styles using a procedural generation algorithm in Unreal Engine, which enabled fast, real-time rendering. Using the virtual images, we trained an image-to-image translation model called StarGAN to enhance the generator network with skip connections. The model trained with a virtual dataset yielded more practical outcomes than training with only a limited number of real images. Our study underscores the utility of virtual images for training deep-learning models in interior design. The model can enhance existing design tools by providing quick and convenient image generation. © 2025 U-turn Press LLC.

Study on the spatial distribution patterns and formation mechanism of religious sites based on XGBoostSHAP and spatial econometric models: a case study of the Yangtze River Delta, China

Religious sites are a significant embodiment of a nation's faith and culture, with their spatial distribution resulting from the interplay of sociocultural, historical, and environmental factors. Preserving religious heritage aids in the transmission of ethnic culture and promotes the development of cultural diversity. This study employs kernel density estimation and spatial autocorrelation to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics of religious sites in the Yangtze River Delta. Additionally, it utilizes the XGBoostSHAP machine learning model to investigate the importance of the driving factors, and combines this with spatial econometric models for validation. The results reveal that: (1) Religious sites in the Yangtze River Delta exhibit significant clustering with an irregular distribution. Coastal areas have a high density, forming a beltlike distribution centered around Wenzhou and Taizhou, while inland areas are sparse, creating an edge effect;(2) The spatial distribution of religious sites is primarily influenced by social and historical cultural factors, with minimal impact from natural factors. Policy support and public transportation have the greatest influence, while ethnic culture also play important roles;(3) Among natural factors, Higher slope values and NDVI, along with lower elevation, are conducive to the clustering of religious sites. although developed water systems may pose disaster risks. Social factors such as policy protection, transportation accessibility, economic development level, and moderate population density are crucial. Historical and cultural factors, including ethnic religious cultural heritage and tourism, are also significant. This study is of great importance for formulating reasonable strategies for the protection and sustainable development of religious cultural heritage in the context of rapid urbanization.

The object of study of this paper is the Church of Cristo Obrero y Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, in the city of Atlántida, Uruguay, designed and built by Uruguayan engineer Eladio Dieste between 1956 and 1960, and proclaimed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. Furthermore, the object of study is the outset of Eladio Dieste's experimentations with reinforced brickwork, which resulted in innovative thin-shell structural typologies. Hence, the objective of this article is to verify the geometrical relationships within the continuous gaussian vaults of the Cristo Obrero' roof and the ruled surfaces of its lateral walls. The proposed methodological procedures for this research were the in situ visitation of the object of study, followed by the consultation of original construction drawings, as well as the exploratory parametric modeling and polynomial regression of the architectural geometry of the Church of Cristo Obrero. Amongst the expected contributions for this research reside the dissemination of Latin-American modern architectural heritage sites within European academic journals, digital design technologies within Latin-American research centres, as well as the fostering of the comprehension of the design and construction process of the Uruguayan engineer Eladio Dieste. © 2023 F. Impact of sudden public crises on spatial distribution patterns and driving factors of the urban catering industry: a case study of Shanghai's catering POI data before and after COVID-19

This study uses Shanghai to explore the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the spatial distribution patterns and driving factors of the urban catering industry. Through quantitative analysis of restaurant point-of-interest data and influencing factors in Shanghai's main urban area from 2016 to 2022 using geographic information technology, machine learning, and spatial econometric models, this study predicts spatial changes in the catering industry. The number of restaurants in Shanghai's main urban area continuously decreased from 2016 to 2022, with a significant pre-pandemic decline. The catering industry in this area has a significant spatial correlation in the spatial distribution, showing a pattern of "one core dominance with multiple cores coexisting," with Jing'an and Huangpu Districts having the highest densities, which is expected to continue. Target markets remain a decisive factor in restaurant location selection post-COVID. Restaurant aggregation is most favorable when the population density is between 0 -50,000 people/km(2), GDP is between 0-20 billion yuan/km(2), housing prices are between 20,000 -130,000 yuan/m(2), school density is between 0-20/km(2), hospital density is between 0-10/km(2), and attraction density is between 0-40/km(2). Transportation conditions have no apparent threshold;the more developed the transportation, the more favorable the conditions for the catering industry. Post-COVID-19, areas with high housing prices and around tourist attractions are less likely to attract many restaurants. Areas around hospitals maintain restaurant aggregation, although this will decrease. Areas around schools will become popular for restaurants in the future. [GRAPHICS}.

This paper analyzes the development pattern of 35 megacities from 1980 to 2020 and examines the impact of megacity's growth on the city system. We use primacy, urban concentration, Zipf's coefficient, and entropy to characterize the city system in a country with a megacity. Our analysis finds the following:(1) The growth rates of megacities are faster than the totals of the national population and national urban population in general;(2) the growth of megacities makes the city system diverge;(3) the development of megacities tends to be companied by the shrinking of small cities; and(4) emerging megacities has substantial impacts on urbanization strategy, urban planning, and policy.

Semi-arid cities in the borderlands of the southwestern United States of America are becoming critical frontiers in the socio-ecological challenges emerging at the confluence of climate change, social justice, and sustainable development. While the emerging literature emphasizes the potential role of circular food systems, there has been little scholarly and policy attention to circular food-oriented Community-based Organizations (CBOs) in medium-sized semi-arid cities experiencing intense drought and growing social inequalities. Using an exploratory qualitative design, this paper examined the circular food practices of three major CBOs in Tucson, Arizona. Through in-depth interviews with staff and volunteers and on-site observations, the study found that circular food practices in Tucson are implemented to address social, environmental, and economic challenges facing marginalized populations. Our paper illuminates how localizing circular food systems generates co-benefits that support sustainable development by reducing food waste, reusing excess products, and repurposing by-products. This paper provides new insights for environmental policymakers and planners to support the development of synergies and linkages among CBOs, enhance resource capacity, and integrate circular food practices to foster equity-focused sustainable development of semi-arid cities confronted with socio-ecological stressors. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The so-called "Corona Blue" decline in mental health after the COVID-19 outbreak. This study examines how COVID-19 risk perception affects mental health via urban space usage in Seoul, Korea, and Shanghai, China. It uniquely explores direct PR-MH and OS-MH effects, along with indirect effects mediated by pandemic-driven changes in urban space utilization. Results reveal that visits to urban destinations and open spaces mediate the relationship between perceived risk and MH, with differing significance levels between the two cities. In Seoul, disruptions in daily life negatively affected mental health through decreased interactions with urban destinations and outdoor spaces, with a statistically significant impact on stress through urban destinations. This suggests that maintaining access to and engagement with these spaces is crucial for mental health during crises. Conversely, Shanghai showed indirect effects predominantly through perceptions of safety, which significantly influenced anxiety levels through urban destinations, but did not manifest similarly through interactions with outdoor spaces. Caution in interpretation is necessary for better generation, but the outcomes of this study underscore the importance of considering cultural, historical, and political contexts in understanding the varying impacts of future pandemic policies on mental health.

Gainesville's Forgotten Neighborhood An Examination of Narratives in planning

Problem, research strategy, and findings This study contributes to our understanding of how planning reproduces the "dominant narratives" of the most powerful, especially those that stigmatize minority neighborhoods, but also how equity-minded planners can identify and apply residents' views, or their "counternarratives." To enable the focus on social equity, we used critical race theory (CRT) to examine enduring racial stigma, particularly against African Americans, in historical and current planning narratives. Specifically, we conducted a case study of more than 5 decades of neighborhood planning in the Porters neighborhood of Gainesville (FL) to understand how planners' roles in storytelling and narratives reinforce inequity. Using a thematic narrative analysis, we discovered patterns and relationships in stories and narratives from within and outside the neighborhood and how dominant narratives became embedded in planning documents. The thematic narrative analysis of the Porters case was informed by our 2017-2018 research project to pilot a participatory neighborhood narrative for use in local planning. Through this analysis of practice in an African American community within a Deep South college town, we conclude that narratives matter and have profound consequences. Although neighborhood planning has shifted to include participatory methods, planners often fail to examine their own biases and the racist presumptions of planning culture and institutions before crafting policy. Takeaway for practice Narratives are not only externally imposed on locales by surrounding residents but are also integrated and reproduced in planning documents. Reflective equity-minded planners can use narrative inquiry and CRT to deliberately examine the prevailing narratives within their historic and current policies. With increasing demands for biodiversity monitoring, the integration of camera trapping (CT) and deep learning automation holds significant promise. However, few studies have addressed the application potential of this approach in urban areas in Asia. 4064 CT images targeting 18 species of urban wildlife in South Korea were collected and used to fine-tune a pre-trained object detection model. The performance of the custom model was evaluated across three levels: animal filtering, mammal and bird classification, and species classification, to assess its applicability. A comparison with existing universal models was conducted to test the utility of the custom model. The custom model demonstrated approximately 94% and 85% accuracy in animal filtering and species classification, respectively, outperforming universal models in some aspects. In addition, recommendations regarding CT installation distances and the acquisition of nighttime data were provided. Importantly, these results have practical implications for terrestrial monitoring, especially focusing on the analysis of local species. Automating image filtering and species classification facilitates efficient analysis of large CT datasets and enables broader participation in wildlife monitoring.
