This paper examines the conservation history of the Ankara Acropolis, today named 'Haci-Bayram District', and the spatial change in this historic environment linked to the development of urban conservation since the foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923. We drew upon archival research such as old maps, aerial images, former analyses, technical plans and project reports, legal decisions by conservation boards and a field survey to illustrate the morphological change triggered by conservation attempts. Haci-Bayram District is a unique heritage site located in the old town of Ankara, the capital of Turkey, and has a symbolic square in which religious histories co-exist through the Augustus Temple and Haci-Bayram Veli Mosque on top of the city's ancient Acropolis. This historic district was one of the first in which urban conservation and development projects were implemented, during the construction of the modern Turkish capital, and has witnessed dramatic transformation, in the name of urban renewal. The findings of this study demonstrate an exceptional spatial representation of changing concepts of conservation in line with the Turkish planning system.

Throughout history, societies have produced spaces that meet their needs and reflect their lifestyles/cultures. The produced space, on the other hand, later appeared in front of people as an element that supports or hinders social development. The advanced level reached by globalization and the dazzling developments in technology have brought the relationship between society and space back to the centre of the scientific agenda in the wind of digitalization. The research aims to explore how Turkish society's relationship with space can best be shaped in the digital era. The data was collected with the methods of document analysis, in-depth interviews with experts, psychometric test;and analysed with psychometric assessment and content analysis. The psychometric test, which was prepared uniquely for this study, revealed the dilemmas and socio-spatial preferences of Turkish society in the digitalization process. The findings show that Turkish society cares about the urban innovation and efficiency promised by spatial digitalization and likes the facilitation and helping side of smart technology. On the other hand, Turkish society is disturbed by the controlling, intrusive and managerial aspects of digitalization in urban spaces. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The spatial differentiation mechanism of intangible cultural heritage and its integration with tourism development based on explainable machine learning and coupled coordination models: a case study of the Jiang-Zhe-Hu in China

As a vital carrier of traditional culture, Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) not only preserves historical value but also fosters cultural identity and confidence. This study utilizes explainable machine learning and coupled coordination models to analyze the spatial distribution and formation mechanisms of ICH resources in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai (Jiang-Zhe-Hu). The results indicate that (1) ICH resources in the Jiang-Zhe-Hu exhibit a clustered distribution pattern characterized by "three primary cores and two secondary cores." The primary core areas are Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou, while the secondary core areas are Yangzhou and Nanjing. (2) Population, number of religious places, and GDP have a significant positive impact on the distribution of ICH in the Jiang-Zhe-Hu. NDVI and road mileage have relatively minor effects on ICH distribution. (3) In terms of ICH resources, Zhejiang Province overall has a higher level than Jiangsu Province, with Lishui having the highest evaluation value and the most abundant resources. Regarding the level of tourism industry development, Shanghai has the highest comprehensive evaluation value, followed by Suzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou, all of which have relatively high levels of tourism development. (4) According to the coupled coordination model analysis, Shanghai demonstrates the best coupling degree between ICH resources and the tourism industry, achieving a good coordination level. In Jiangsu Province, the integration of ICH resources and the tourism industry is relatively better in the southern (e.g., Nanjing, Suzhou), but there are still imbalances in development in the northern. Zhejiang Province has an overall higher degree of integration between ICH and the tourism industry compared to Jiangsu, with more balanced development. However, there is still room for improvement in the deep integration of ICH resources with the tourism industry.

Neighborhood Characteristics, Deprivation, and Attachment: Evidence From Guangzhou, China

Housing reform since the 1990s has created a new sociospatial structure in Chinese cities. However, neighborhood deprivation remains one of the key challenges for urban housing policies. This study investigates the relationship among perceived neighborhood characteristics, deprivation, and attachment, based on a survey of 59 neighborhoods across Guangzhou, China. We adopt an objective approach to measure the index of multiple deprivation (IMD) on the neighborhood scale. The descriptive statistics indicate that while residents in deprived neighborhoods generally report lower level of perceived neighborhood physical environments and neighborhood attachment, their evaluations of neighborhood social environments are not necessarily lower. Results from the hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) show that perceived housing conditions, perceived neighborhood environment, neighborhood ties, and sense of security are significantly correlated with neighborhood attachment. Furthermore, the moderation analysis reveals that the effect of perceived housing conditions on neighborhood attachment is stronger in more deprived neighborhoods. We propose that residents' subjective feelings, timely and direct measurement of IMD, and context-based strategies should be used in urban housing policies to reduce the negative impacts of neighborhood deprivation.

Impact of corridor highway system on communities: Built environment and travel mode choices

Conventional corridor management has focused on travel speed and efficiency while ignoring interactions between highway corridors and surrounding areas. This study investigates the interaction between the corridor highway system and the built environment around highways by estimating sustainable mode choices with respect to the land use characteristics of surrounding corridor highways throughout 29 regions in the U.S. The results indicate that the D variables at the corridor level matter. D variables at the corridor level, such as activity density, job-population balance, percentage of accessible jobs within 10 min by car, intersection density, percentage of 4-way intersections, and transit stop density, were highly associated with internal capture, walking trips, and transit use. The neighborhoods with higher activity density, job-population balance, intersection density, and better employment accessibility by transit experienced reduced VMT. The likelihood of internal trips, walking trips, and transit use decreased with household size and income;the opposite signs were found with VMT. The regional gasoline price had significant effects on all trips. In conclusion, this study provides planning and transportation researchers and practitioners with new evidence on the importance of built environmental characteristics (D variables) to encourage sustainable mode choices in the proximate neighborhoods of corridor highways.

The effect of extremely low sky view factor on land surface temperatures in urban residential areas

Cities are becoming hotter due to global climate change and urban heat island intensification. This has resulted in an increased number of hospitalizations and deaths during heatwaves. Previous studies have reported a positive correlation between moderate to high sky view factor (SVF) values and land surface temperature (LST), but extremely low SVF situations that occur in urbanized residential areas have not been fully studied. This study investigated the relationship between SVF and summertime LST for urbanized residential areas ranging from very open to very closed considering external factors. Similar to previous studies, the results showed that low-rise detached housing was associated with a higher SVF and a higher LST than high-rise multifamily housing because the ground surface received more direct solar radiation. However, when the SVF was extremely low (less than 0.2) because of being surrounded by high-rise high-density flat-type apartments, this relationship was reversed due to the higher anthropogenic heat, lower ventilation performance, lower green infrastructure, and decreased longwave radiation even though daytime. This has major implications for the health and well-being of residents in high-density urban residential areas as they will receive a higher terrestrial radiation load than previously thought, a dangerous situation in the event of heatwaves. Nature-based solutions (NBS) are championed for providing co-benefits to cities and residents, yet their environmental justice impacts are increasingly debated. In this paper, we explore whether and how hybrid governance approaches, such as Mosaic Governance, may contribute to just transformations and sustainable cities through fostering long-term collaborations between local governments, local communities, and grassroots initiatives. Based on case studies in three major European cities, we propose and then exemplify six possible pathways to increase environmental justice: greening the neighborhood, diversifying values and practices, empowering people, bridging across communities, linking to institutions, and scaling of inclusive discourses and practices. Despite the diversity of environmental justice outcomes across cases, our results consistently show that Mosaic Governance particularly contributes to recognition justice through diversifying NBS practices in alignment with community values and aspirations. The results demonstrate the importance of a wider framing of justice in the development of NBS, sensitive to social, cultural, economic and political inequities as well understanding potential pathways to enhance not only environmental justice, but also social justice at large. Especially in marginalised communities, Mosaic Governance holds much potential to advance social justice by enabling empowering, bridging, and linking pathways across diverse communities and NBS practices.

Attributes of the Positive Side of urban Shrinkage: Evidence from Seoul

While most studies on shrinking urban areas have focused on the negative consequences of urban change, scholarly interest in reinventing urban shrinkage continues to grow. Nevertheless, research on the possible benefits of urban shrinkage remains insufficient. Thus, this study used a cross-case analysis to investigate the positive attributes of shrinkage as well as their utilization processes and associated benefits in three shrinking districts in Seoul. The results indicate that the following opportune circumstances could arise: collective actions prompted by people feeling despair after shrinkage;the initiation and spread of small-scale projects that replace a grand plan;the availability of less competitive land and built property for transformative uses;and the rediscovery of local industrial values and know-how. These attributes influence the growth of social capital and civic engagement in local planning and the revitalization of stagnant local economies. The findings suggest that even if an urban district declines, opportunities for reinvention may occur if stakeholders effectively capitalize on the favorable features of urban shrinkage.

This study proposes a framework integrating Routine Activities Theory into a hybrid physical-virtual space. Utilizing a space-time path metaphor, it explores phishing susceptibility in relation to daily activities in the hybrid physical-virtual environments. The mixed-method approach includes surveys and experiments, such as simulated phishing emails, to assess response patterns in both settings and investigate travel behavior's impact on cyber victimization. This hybrid model seeks to understand how physical and virtual interactions affect cybercrime vulnerability, aiding in developing prevention strategies. Additionally, the research underscores the role of visual analytics in cybersecurity, turning complex data into visual forms for effective threat analysis.

Impacts of Rail Transit Accessibility on Firm Spatial Distribution: Case Study in the Metropolitan Area of Washington, DC

Agglomeration economies can arise in areas with high concentrations of firms, which can be facilitated by improved transportation accessibility. Accessibility can be improved by public transit infrastructure, especially in combination with careful planning for transit-oriented development (TOD) that creates compact, high density, mixed-use, and pedestrian-friendly built environments in proximity to public transit infrastructure. Although the literature on TOD has increasingly shown positive effects on residential development and property values, its effects on commercial and industrial development, location of firms, and associated agglomeration economies are less clear and require more empirical study. This study analyzes firm location patterns by industry/sector in the metropolitan area of Washington, DC and examines whether significant spatial clusters have developed in relation to: 1) the presence of Metrorail stations;and 2) the presence of specific industry firms in the earlier year, using kernel density analysis and multinomial logit (MNL) regression. The analysis results indicated that firms in certain industries, such as finance and insurance/real estate and public administration, are more likely to benefit from proximity to Metrorail stations than other industries. Furthermore, firms in several industries show the effects of agglomeration within the same industry while several combinations of industries exhibit cross-industry agglomeration effects. The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of which industry sectors are more likely to be located in proximity to rail transit stations and TOD areas and to the understanding of agglomeration effects within the same industry and between different industries.
