It’s important to explore ways to integrate bus and rail transit by combining both the effects of the built environment and their competition. Using Wuhan city in China as a case study, this study develops gradient boosting decision trees(GBDTs) to examine the threshold range of built environment impacts on bus transit trip rates and to further explore the competitive impacts of rail transit on bus transit within these threshold ranges. The results show that when the number of service point-of-interests(POIs) within a 500 m radius of bus stop reaches 350 and the distance to the destination is 5 km, the model split of bus transit is the highest. The competition impact shows that rail transit promotes bus transit trip rates in urban fringe areas, but restricts in high-density central areas and the regions dominated by short distance trips. These findings provide technical support for optimizing spatial layouts through transit-oriented development. © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Public parks are critical urban infrastructures offering health, environmental, social, and cultural benefits to people. However, the idea of park quality has lacked a clear operational definition and normative standard for measurement. We provide critical insights into existing park quality instruments and advocate for an alternative approach. First, due to the significant diversity in parks, inherent ambiguity and subjectivity in the idea of quality, and previous instruments ' inconsistent operationalizations of park quality, we recommend that future research shift its focus from creating instruments for universal application and standardized measurement to developing an inventory or list of park quality indicators that researchers and practitioners can selectively choose for their unique park contexts. Second, through our multidisciplinary examination, we identify five limitations in existing park quality instruments: (1) lack of attention to the histories of marginalized communities, (2) overemphasis on physical activities and public health, (3) lack of attention to ecological function and biodiversity, (4) lack of subjective measurements, and (5) insufficient consideration of multiple parks or a park system. Overall, a more flexible and site -specific approach to park quality measurement and the adoption of new indicators of parkquality are expected to accomplish a more comprehensive and fairer assessment of park quality, contributing to park equity research and practice.

Detecting spatial heat vulnerability in the city considering spatiotemporal population distribution: A focus on the elderly during daytime

Escalating heatwaves induced by climate change are giving rise to a range of health issues. Traditionally, government policies focus on residential vulnerability, neglecting dynamic population shifts during workday heat peaks away from their residences. This study explores the influence of spatiotemporal population dynamics on the distribution of heatwave damage. Utilizing the data from Seoul, South Korea between 2017 and 2019, we assessed the relative risk of emergency visits for heat-related illnesses during heatwaves across hospital service areas. A multilevel regression approach was employed to examine the contributions of daytime and residential populations of vulnerable groups, while controlling for established heat vulnerability indicators. The results revealed a significant correlation between the relative risk of heat-related emergencies and the proportion of the daytime elderly population. These findings suggest that the daytime population, as compared to the residential population, can better capture vulnerable areas and individuals in the context of an urban heatwave. Consequently, the study proposes that local heat response policies consider the dynamic locations of vulnerable populations.

Most energy exchanges take place through the building skin. The skin characteristics play a decisive role in the extent of these exchanges, but they are somewhat more varied in the double skin façade (DSF). Among these characteristics, cavity segmentation has a noticeable effect on the implementation of the DSF in different directions during the hot and cold seasons. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of DSF segmentation in energy consumption and natural ventilation of high-rise buildings in hot and dry climates. This study used DesignBuilder software to study sixty-four segmentation component scenarios in an eight-story residential building in Isfahan, Iran. Moreover, a proposed hybrid model utilizing the hybridization of the Hunger Game Search and Gradient Boosting (HGS-GB) algorithm was employed to estimate energy consumption in various scenarios involving lighting, heating, cooling, and total scenarios. The available outcomes revealed that the HGS-GB model had a better performance in comparison with other individual models, such as Gradient Boosting (GB), Random Forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbors (KNN). The R2 values for lighting, heating, cooling, and total energy estimation were 0.9993, 0.9958, 0.9991, and 0.9922, respectively. The findings of this study suggest the significance of DSF segmentation in energy consumption and natural ventilation in high-rise buildings in hot and dry climates. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

In recent decades, the number of farmer's markets has increased dramatically across the country. Though farmers markets have been described as White spaces, they can play important roles in reducing food insecurity. This is particularly true in Michigan where farmer's markets were crucial collaborators in pioneering programs such as Double-Up Food Bucks that help low-income residents and people of color gain access to fresh, healthy, locally grown food. This article examines the questions: (1) What are the demographic characteristics of the farmers market managers, vendors, and customers and how do these influence market activities? (2) To what extent do farmers markets participate in programs aimed at reducing food insecurity? (3) To what extent do farmers markets serve low-income residents and people of color? and (4) How has the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19) affected the operations of farmers markets. This article discusses the findings of a 2020 study that examined the extent to which Michigan's farmer's markets served low-income customers and people of color and participated in food assistance programs. The study examined 79 farmers markets and found that 87.3% of the farmer's market managers are White. On average, roughly 79% of the vendors of the markets are White and almost 18% are people of color. Most of the vendors in the markets participate in nutrition assistance programs. Market managers estimate that about 76% of their customers are White and about 23% are people of color. Farmers markets operated by people of color attract higher numbers of customers and vendors of color than those operated White market managers. Almost half of the farmer's markets started operations later than usual in 2020 because of the pandemic. More than a third of the markets reported that their funding declined during the pandemic. With the development of the city, the advantages of the integrated pipe gallery are becoming more and more obvious. In recent years, the government departments have also intensified efforts to promote the construction of urban integrated pipe gallery. The prefabricated pipe gallery can save all the template costs, and there is no wet operation on site. Most of the process is completed in the prefabrication plant, the labor cost is greatly reduced, and the construction period is greatly shortened. Improve and optimize the design and installation technology of unequal gantry cranes and pipe lifting and installation technology, and improve the overall ergonomics of prefabricated pipe installation through rapid installation of prefabricated pipes. During the installation process of the prefabricated pipe gallery, according to the characteristics of the installation of the pipe gallery, the new technology and new equipment are used for the flow-through operation, which can realize the integrated construction work of quick unloading, hoisting, turning and installation of components, greatly improving the installation efficiency. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This study provides theoretical grounds for planning smart cities using multidisciplinary approaches, offering insightful suggestions to researchers and policy- and decision-makers. It will emphasize how the Internet of Things and related technologies will collaborate to develop an antivirus-built environment against future pandemics. A paradigm shift from segregated water management to an integrated approach is receiving increasing attention since fragmentation affects urban water availability. Integrated urban Water Management (IUWM) may enhance coordination between policies and actors, thereby establishing internal and external coherence for the efficient use of water resources, equitable and universal water distribution, and environmental conservation. However, studies on understanding urban water integration tend to focus on formal and structural forms without exploring informal processes as a broader perspective to achieve water sustainability. Meanwhile, non-prescribed, non-official rules and actions can be fundamental to overcoming fragmentation in urban water management. Therefore, this study explores informal mechanisms for pursuing an integrated approach to urban water management in Indonesia. Makassar is selected as a case study because of its variety of urban water issues and rich context of informal actions. The case offers lessons for other cities in Indonesia and beyond. We ask the following main questions: What informal actions facilitate internal and external integration in urban water management in Makassar, and how do these informal mechanisms affect Integrated urban Water Management? The methodology comprises a qualitative content analysis to identify the mechanisms by analysing policy documents, reports, newspaper articles, social media, and previous studies. Semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders confirm and explain the content analysis results. The study finds that Makassar's IUWM approach extends beyond aligning formal mechanisms: informal processes determine water use conflicts, inadequate water access, and water scarcity.
