The reliability on Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) is critical for the safe operation of many industrial applications. In particular, SIS play an important role in oil and gas processing plants. SIS are responsible not only for the continuous operation of the plant, it also keeps the plant in a safe state, avoiding damages to the environment and minimizing risks to employees. Therefore, the correct behavior of such systems is an important goal to achieve when building industrial plants. Verification and testing of SIS programs is a very hard task to accomplish. This happens mainly for two reasons. First, testing the real system is very expensive and sometimes it may take a huge amount of time, weeks or even months. Second, those systems deal with a huge number of variables. It is not always possible for a human tester to check if all of them are correct when performing tests. Providing an automatic and formal testing approach for such systems is an important contribution for the development of such systems. In this work we introduce a new method for generating test cases for SIS programs running on programable Logic Controller (PLC). As we did on previous work, ISA 5.2 diagrams are used as specification of the systems, but now we are using a hardware-in-the-loop technique, and the target artifact is a software running on a PLC. To avoid the execution of redundant tests, we introduced a new test case generation algorithm that is based on equivalence classes. Finally, we discussed a study case in which our method is used to detect error, that were introduced on purpose, on a simple system.

Generally, playing music tones can be done in two ways, melody and chord. Chord is a harmonization of three or more pitch that sounding simultaneously. In MIDI, one command only for sounding one tone. For chord, need three or more command that run together. If implemented in an application, the formulation is required. So MIDI commands can be generated by the program without having to write MIDI commands one by one manually. © 2012 IEEE.

The biggest challenge for text and data mining is to truly impact the biomedical discovery process, enabling scientists to generate novel hypothesis to address the most crucial questions. Among a number of worthy submissions, we have selected six papers that exemplify advances in text and data mining methods that have a demonstrated impact on a wide range of applications. Work presented in this session includes data mining techniques applied to the discovery of 3-way genetic interactions and to the analysis of genetic data in the context of electronic medical records (EMRs), as well as an integrative approach that combines data from genetic (SNP) and transcriptomic (microarray) sources for clinical prediction. Text mining advances include a classification method to determine whether a published article contains pharmacological experiments relevant to drug-drug interactions, a fine-grained text mining approach for detecting the catalytic sites in proteins in the biomedical literature, and a method for automatically extending a taxonomy of health related terms to integrate consumer-friendly synonyms for medical terminologies.

The new trend in the process of data-intensive management indicates the importance of a distributed file system for both Internet large scale services and cloud computing environments. I/O latency and application buffering sizes are two of a number of issues that are essential to be analysed on different class of distributed file systems. In this paper, it is presented a research work comparing four different high performance distributed file systems. Those systems were employed to support a medical image server application in a private storage environment. Experimental results highlight the importance of an appropriate distributed file system to provide a differential level of performance considering application specific characteristics.

A step-based tutoring system for linear circuit analysis is being developed with the capabilities to automatically generate circuit problems with specified characteristics, including randomly generated topologies and element values. The system further generates fully-worked, error-free solutions using the methods typically taught in such classes, and accepts a rich variety of student input such as equations, matrix equations, numerical and multiple-choice answers, re-drawn circuit diagrams, and sketches of waveforms. A randomized, controlled study was conducted using paid student volunteers to compare the effectiveness of two of our tutorials in comparison to working conventional textbook-based problems. The average learning gain was only 3/100 points for the textbook users, but 29/100 points, about 10 times higher, for the tutorial users. The effect size on the post-test scores was 1.21 pooled standard deviations (Cohen d-value) and was statistically significant. A motivational survey administered to these students yielded a 0.53 point higher rating for the software than for the textbook (on a 1-5 scale). The system is being used in Spring 2013 by over 340 students in EEE 202 at Arizona State and two community colleges. About 99% of these students rated the system as “very helpful” or “somewhat helpful”.

Distributed Collaborative Environments provide a common user interface that enables collaborative tasks of geographically dispersed users in a specific context. In such environments, many features can be provided, such as asynchronous and synchronous communication mechanisms, a repository for shared resources, and concurrent (synchronous) edition of content. However, it is clear that there is still a shortage concerning the security support in such environments. This becomes even more severe when the context in which these environments are inserted deals with sensitive data, such as patient data and their medical records. The present work proposes a security model for distributed collaborative environments focusing the support for medical researches.

Metabolomic analysis can indeed enhance the prime variable dataset for the monitoring of perfusion cultures by providing a higher resolution view of the metabolic state. Metabolic profiles can capture physiological state shifts over the course of the perfusion cultures and indicate a metabolic "signature" of the phase transitions, which is not observable from prime variable data. Notably, metabolomics provides orthogonal (to prime variables) evidence that all cultures follow this same metabolic state shift with cell age, independently of bioreactor scale. Additionally, this analysis can increase the information content of process development experiments by helping better understand the impact of changes in bioreactor operating conditions on cell physiology. In this context, metabolic profiling could be integrated into the monitoring of cell physiology in perfusion cultures. © IFAC.
