Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has revolutionized the design and fabrication of bone scaffolds, offering precise and customizable solutions for bone tissue engineering. In this study, we developed polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds that incorporated gold plasmonic blackbodies (AuPBs) to harness photothermal properties for temperature-controlled bone regeneration. The AuPB-PCL scaffolds demonstrated enhanced mechanical strength, a tunable thermal response under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, and improved osteogenic potential. Photothermal stimulation effectively modulated cellular responses, promoting osteoblast proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and mineralization. Notably, mild hyperthermia (39-41 °C) induced by laser irradiation optimized osteogenesis, while excessive temperatures (≥42.5 °C) impaired cellular function due to mitochondrial stress and oxidative damage. These findings highlight the potential of AuPB-PCL scaffolds for controlled photothermal bone regeneration, offering a promising strategy for precise, completely noninvasive stimulation of bone repair. © 2025 The Authors. ATP_mCNN: Predicting ATP binding sites through pretrained language models and multi-window neural networks

Adenosine triphosphate plays a vital role in providing energy and enabling key cellular processes through interactions with binding proteins. The increasing amount of protein sequence data necessitates computational methods for identifying binding sites. However, experimental identification of adenosine triphosphate-binding residues remains challenging. To address the challenge, we developed a multi-window convolutional neural network architecture taking pre-trained protein language model embeddings as input features. In particular, multiple parallel convolutional layers scan for motifs localized to different window sizes. Max pooling extracts salient features concatenated across windows into a final multi-scale representation for residue-level classification. On benchmark datasets, our model achieves an area under the ROC curve of 0.95, significantly improving on prior sequence-based models and outperforming convolutional neural network baselines. This demonstrates the utility of pre-trained language models and multi-window convolutional neural networks for advanced sequence-based prediction of adenosine triphosphate-binding residues. Our approach provides a promising new direction for elucidating binding mechanisms and interactions from primary structure. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

The increasing prevalence of deep hoaxes, such as fake news and phishing schemes, poses a significant threat to cybersecurity, undermining trust and spreading misinformation. In Indonesia, surveys indicate that more than 60% of people exposed to hoax news believe that it is true, emphasizing the urgent need for robust detection methods. Traditional cybersecurity approaches often struggle to keep pace with the growing scale and sophistication of these attacks. To address this challenge, this research investigates the use of deep learning techniques, specifically focusing on text-based hoax detection in the Indonesian language. The study fine-tunes IndoBERT, a pretrained deep learning model optimized for Indonesian text, to enhance the accuracy and scalability of hoax detection. The IndoBERT model was trained on a balanced dataset of 29,552 articles, comprising both hoax and real news content, collected from the Mafindo API and Kaggle's Indonesia News Dataset. The model was fine-tuned using supervised learning and evaluated using several key metrics, including accuracy, F1-score, precision, and recall. The results demonstrate that IndoBERT outperforms existing state-of-the-art approaches, achieving an accuracy of 98.51%, an F1-score of 98.44%, and a precision of 98.23% on the test set. These results highlight the effectiveness of IndoBERT for hoax detection, which offers a scalable solution to improve cybersecurity defenses against deceptive content. This research contributes to the integration of advanced deep learning models into cybersecurity systems, addressing the evolving landscape of cyber threats.

Drought propagation in an Andean basin in South America: a spatio-temporal analysis approach with monitoring indices

Drought is a climatic phenomenon that has increased in severity over time. This study analyzed drought spread in the Alto Patía basin (13,047 km2) in South America, applying the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Vegetation Health Index (VHI), and Streamflow Drought Index (SDI) to assess meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological drought, respectively. Synchronous and asynchronous correlations were estimated, and Wavelet analysis was conducted to verify relationships among drought types. Results show that the lag between drought types varies based on the intensity, temporal continuity, and spatial extent of meteorological drought. A lag of zero months (1–2 months) was observed between meteorological and hydrological drought when moderate (severe) meteorological drought partially (fully) covers the basin. Agricultural drought, however, does not always correspond to meteorological drought during isolated rainfall events. As the first study in Colombia to systematically connect these drought types, this research addresses a gap in understanding how drought impacts progress across systems in regions with complex rainfall patterns. These findings offer critical insights into the interdependencies among drought types, supporting enhanced drought monitoring and early warning systems in similar climatic regions. By identifying specific lags between meteorological and hydrological droughts, this study provides practical guidance for land management, water conservation, and crop planning, offering a foundation for future research on drought resilience strategies.

Interest in artificial intelligence (AI)-driven crowd work has increased during the last few years as a line of inquiry that expands upon prior research on microtasking to represent a means of scaling up complex tasks through AI mediation. Despite the increasing attention to the macrotask phenomenon in crowdsourcing, there is a need to understand the processes, elements, and constraints underlying the infrastructural and behavioral aspects in such form of crowd work when involving collaboration. To this end, this paper provides a first attempt to characterize some of the research conducted in this direction to identify important paths for an agenda comprising key drivers, challenges, and prospects for integrating human-centered AI in collaborative crowdsourcing environments.

HAAQI-Net: A Non-Intrusive Neural Music Audio Quality Assessment Model for Hearing Aids

This paper introduces HAAQI-Net, a non-intrusive music audio quality assessment model for hearing aid users. Unlike traditional methods such as Hearing Aid Audio Quality Index (HAAQI), which requires intrusive reference signal comparisons, HAAQI-Net offers a more accessible and computationally efficient alternative. Leveraging a bidirectional long short-term memory architecture with attention mechanisms and features extracted from a pre-trained BEATs model, it can predict HAAQI scores directly from music audio clips and hearing loss patterns. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared to the traditional HAAQI as the reference, HAAQI-Net achieves a linear correlation coefficient (LCC) of 0.9368, a Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (SRCC) of 0.9486, and a mean squared error (MSE) of 0.0064, while significantly reducing the inference time from 62.52 seconds to 2.54 seconds. Furthermore, a knowledge distillation strategy was applied, reducing the parameters by 75.85% and inference time by 96.46%, while maintaining strong performance (LCC: 0.9071, SRCC: 0.9307, MSE: 0.0091). To expand its capabilities, HAAQI-Net was adapted to predict subjective human scores, mean opinion score (MOS), by fine-tuning. This adaptation significantly improved the prediction accuracy. Furthermore, the robustness of HAAQI-Net was evaluated under varying sound pressure level (SPL) conditions, revealing optimal performance at a reference SPL of 65 dB, with the accuracy gradually decreasing as SPL deviated from this point. The advancements in subjective score prediction, SPL robustness, and computational efficiency position HAAQI-Net as a reliable solution for music audio quality assessment, significantly contributing to the development of efficient and accurate models in audio signal processing and hearing aid technology.

Respiratory rate (RR) monitoring is crucial in clinical and healthcare settings. With advancements in microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology, monitoring respiration using seismocardiogram (SCG) has emerged as a promising approach. This study presents a computationally efficient algorithm for estimating RR from SCG signal. The proposed algorithm consists of two primary steps: first, applying Gaussian averaging filter for pre-processing, followed by computing the averaged spectrum from the scalogram based on complex Morlet wavelet within the specified frequency range. RR is then estimated from the dominant frequency that appears in the averaged spectrum. This study also establishes the analytical relationship between the parameters of Gaussian averaging filter and the sampling frequency of SCG signal, which serves as the design criterion for pre-processing filter. The proposed algorithm undergoes testing on two SCG datasets and demonstrates its feasibility for estimating RR from SCG signal. The algorithm is also tested on both finger and wrist PPG datasets for RR estimation. The test results present high agreement between the RR estimations from SCG (or PPG) signal and those from respiration signal. Furthermore, an experiment using the dataset collected with a magnetic field-based respiration sensor during pulmonary rehabilitation is conducted to validate the algorithm's robustness against motion artifacts. Based on the testing results, the proposed algorithm shows significant potential in clinical and healthcare applications. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

This study presents a novel approach to human keypoint detection in low-resolution thermal images using transfer learning techniques. We introduce the first application of the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test in thermal image computer vision, establishing a new paradigm for mobility assessment. Our method leverages a MobileNetV3-Small encoder and a ViTPose decoder, trained using a composite loss function that balances latent representation alignment and heatmap accuracy. The model was evaluated using the Object Keypoint Similarity (OKS) metric from the COCO Keypoint Detection Challenge. The proposed model achieves better performance with AP, AP50, and AP75 scores of 0.861, 0.942, and 0.887 respectively, outperforming traditional supervised learning approaches like Mask R-CNN and ViTPose-Base. Moreover, our model demonstrates superior computational efficiency in terms of parameter count and FLOPS. This research lays a solid foundation for future clinical applications of thermal imaging in mobility assessment and rehabilitation monitoring. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Classification of single neurons at a brain-wide scale is a way to characterize the structural and functional organization of brains. Here we acquired and standardized a large morphology database of 20,158 mouse neurons and generated a potential connectivity map of single neurons based on their dendritic and axonal arbors. With such an anatomy–morphology–connectivity mapping, we defined neuron connectivity subtypes for neurons in 31 brain regions. We found that cell types defined by connectivity show distinct separation from each other. Within this context, we were able to characterize the diversity in secondary motor cortical neurons, and subtype connectivity patterns in thalamocortical pathways. Our findings underscore the importance of connectivity in characterizing the modularity of brain anatomy at the single-cell level. These results highlight that connectivity subtypes supplement conventionally recognized transcriptomic cell types, electrophysiological cell types and morphological cell types as factors to classify cell classes and their identities. © The Author(s) 2025.
