Urban flooding poses a significant challenge to the sustainability of rapidly growing Indian cities. Low-impact development (LID) strategies such as green roofs have shown the potential to reduce stormwater runoff and urban flooding worldwide with their ability to mimic natural hydrology. However, implementation of green roofs in practice is often hindered by the lack of agreement on their performance across different studies. Here, we present a performance assessment of green roofs based on building-level implementation scenarios, designed considering their feasibility, in a high-density urbanized catchment in Ahmedabad, India. We further analyse 1200 scenarios for 0-100% GR application at different storm durations and frequencies to understand the minimum GR application rate to reduce runoff effectively. Additionally, contributions of uncertainties in the catchment, green roof, and rainfall intensity parameters to the runoff reduction are quantified. Green roofs can reduce up to 62% flood volumes and 24% stormwater runoff. However, as a standalone strategy, they are reasonably effective only beyond 25% application rates. Further, rainfall intensity contributes significantly more than catchment or green roof parameters to the total runoff reduction uncertainty. These findings highlight the need for an integrated strategy combining LIDs and stormwater system upgradation. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A hydrographic survey can be a cumbersome sometimes. The data can be sparse, providing it can be costly, and it took a lot of manpower and time. Space-borne data like multispectral images can be a helpful tool towards hydrographic survey, especially in the shallow water area. The company like EOMAP and TCARTA make use of Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB) as a tool and product. Would it be great if it also can be applied in Malaysia, especially on the low-risk job or survey planning? Enlarging the survey area and providing a continuous and detailed water depth information is the main objective in this research. In order to complement with convenience and cost reduction, the author used Landsat 8 "(free downloadable images)"in this research. Structuring the procedure is the central part of the process involving pre-processing and processing step until the final product obtained. In this research, the author used various kind of bathymetry algorithms such as Single-Band Algorithm (SBA), Green-Band Algorithm (GBA), and Stumpf. Moreover, the author also uses Principal Component Analysis (PCA) tool from ArcMap and Spear Relative Water Depth: Log-Ratio Transform tool from ENVI to derived bathymetry. All of this bathymetry algorithm gives out a different concept with a different statistical approach. The final result then will be compared and evaluated with Single-Beam Echosounder data (ground truth). © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

A first-principles study on stabilizing disordered LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode material by doping

High-voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) is a promising cathode material for high energy-density Li-ion batteries. The LNMO phase exhibits either ordered or disordered structure;meanwhile, the Mn ions possess 3+ and 4+ mixed valence states. The main challenges of LNMO cathode material for real applications are that the ordered LNMO phase possesses poor rate capability and that the Mn3+/4+ redox reaction leads to Mn dissolution. Doping has been a straightforward approach to address these issues, by enhancing the stability of the disordered LNMO phase and reducing the Mn3+ fraction in LNMO. However, experimental trials involved different setups and uncertainties, which usually cannot be directly compared, and thus an investigation of doping influence on disordered LNMO based on fair comparison is required. Herein, we screened and proposed the best dopants that can improve LNMO performance, and we clarified the corresponding mechanism based on first-principles calculations and thermodynamics. The stable doping systems and preferred doping sites were obtained through phase stability evaluation. Mechanism of disordered LNMO stabilization was obtained through analyzing the relation between the change of transition metal valence states after doping and the ability of dopants to stabilize disordered LNMO. It was found that not only extra-electron dopants stabilize disordered LNMO, as most of the studies reported, but extra-hole dopants could also stabilize disordered LNMO. Furthermore, considering the Mn3+/4+ redox reaction, extra-hole dopants, including Mg, Na, and Zn, were suggested to be the dopants that could improve LNMO performance with simultaneously increasing the fraction of disordered phase and avoiding Mn3+/4+ redox reaction. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

This manuscript is published in Microscopy and Microanalysis (DOI: 10.1093/micmic/ozad083). Modern electron tomography has progressed to higher resolution at lower doses by leveraging compressed sensing methods that minimize total variation (TV). However, these sparsity-emphasized reconstruction algorithms introduce tunable parameters that greatly influence the reconstruction quality. Here, Pareto front analysis shows that high-quality tomograms are reproducibly achieved when TV minimization is heavily weighted. However, in excess, compressed sensing tomography creates overly smoothed 3D reconstructions. Adding momentum to the gradient descent during reconstruction reduces the risk of over-smoothing and better ensures that compressed sensing is well behaved. For simulated data, the tedious process of tomography parameter selection is efficiently solved using Bayesian optimization with Gaussian processes. In combination, Bayesian optimization with momentum-based compressed sensing greatly reduces the required compute time-an 80% reduction was observed for the 3D reconstruction of SrTiO3 nanocubes. Automated parameter selection is necessary for large scale tomographic simulations that enable the 3D characterization of a wider range of inorganic and biological materials. © 2023, CC BY.

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂)/nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) nanocomposite is prepared via a solvent-free hydrothermal reaction. The resulting TiO₂/NG materials exhibit a reduction of the band gap energy compared to pristine TiO₂ from 3.27 eV to 2.69 eV. These materials are characterized by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To prepare biopolymer films with photocatalytic properties, TiO₂ and NG are mixed with biodegradable chitosan and spin-coated on a silicon wafer. Film roughness and thickness are evaluated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). These films are then tested for ciprofloxacin photodegradation by irradiating with visible light. In comparison to the TiO₂/chitosan films, the addition of NG substantially enhances photodegradation efficiency by up to 34 % upon the addition of 5 % w/w of NG. Furthermore, this film is shown to be a good substrate for biomarker detection using laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS). In summary, this nanocomposite-biopolymer film provides good photocatalytic activity towards ciprofloxacin degradation and enhances the ionization efficiency of peptide biomarkers in LDI-MS owing to high efficiency of laser absorption/desorption. This nanocomposite film might be useful for environmental-related and medical application. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

According to fractional order model, the governing equation of viscoelastic plate is established. Using the properties of the shifted Bernstein polynomials, the fractional order equation of viscoelastic plate is resolved, the conversion of fractional differential equations to algebraic equations, and operator matrices represented by Kronecker products are solved in the domain. The convergence study validates the algorithm's efficacy and precision in solving differential equations. The displacement of viscoelastic metal thin plate under different external loads (uniform distribution and linear distribution), the effect of white Gaussian noise on the thin metal plate displacement, the effect of different boundary conditions on thin metal plate displacement under harmonic load are studied, the displacements of metal and polymer plates under different loads are contrasted and stress and strain relationship of two kinds of plates are discussed. Based on the outcomes, it can be concluded that the shift Bernstein polynomial approach is useful for numerically simulating viscoelastic plates. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Coercivity Enhancement in Hematite/Permalloy Heterostructures Across the Morin Transition

Interfacial effects between antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) materials have long been a center of magnetism studies. Aside from the exchange bias occurring at the AFM/FM interface, controlling the coercivity is another significant topic in magnetic recordings. The coercivity of FM materials is often determined through varying grain size, alloy composition, density of defects, etc., which is set during material growth and offers limited room for modification after growth. Hematite ( ) is an AFM material that undergoes a temperature-controlled spin-flip transition, the so-called Morin transition. This transition gives an extra degree of freedom making hematite an intriguing component to study the exchange coupling when interfaced with an FM material. In this work, changes in the magnetic properties of soft magnetic permalloy ( or Py) thin films grown on hematite were studied across the Morin transition. Surprisingly, these samples showed a remarkable change in coercivity during the Morin transition. We attribute this effect to the magnetic domain mixture of hematite during the Morin transition. Our findings present a novel method of controlling the coercivity of plain ferromagnetic thin films. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Over hundreds of years, cats have been domesticated and selectively bred, resulting in numerous pedigreed breeds expedited by recent cat shows and breeding associations. Concerns have been raised about the limited breeding options and the genetic implications of inbreeding, indicating challenges in maintaining genetic diversity and accurate identification in purebred cats. In this study, genetic variability and structure were examined in 5 Thai domestic cat breeds using 15 microsatellite markers and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) D-loop sequencing. In total, 184 samples representing the Wichien Maat (WCM), Suphalak (SL), Khao-Manee (KM), Korat (KR), and Konja (KJ) breeds were analyzed. High genetic diversity (H_o and H_e > 0.5) was observed in all breeds, and mtDNA analysis revealed two primary haplogroups (A and B) that were shared among all domestic cat breeds in Thailand and globally. However, minor differences were observed between Thai domestic cat breeds based on clustering analyses, in which a distinct genetic structure was observed in the WCM breed. This suggests that allele fixation for distinctive morphological traits has occurred in Thai domestic cat breeds that emerged in isolated regions with shared racial origins. Analysis of relationships among individuals within the breed revealed high identification efficiency in Thai domestic cat breeds (P_(ID)sibs < 10⁻⁴). Additionally, diverse and effective individual identification can be ensured by optimizing marker efficiency by using only nine loci. This comprehensive genetic characterization provides valuable insights into conservation strategies and breeding practices for Thai domestic cat breeds. © The Author(s) 2024.

Global environmental challenges and energy crises have driven researchers to develop multifunctional and highly efficient nanomaterials. This study presents dual-functional NiMoO4 (NMO)/NiO hierarchical microspheres that can serve as supercapacitors and photocatalysts prepared using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The α- and β-phase contents of NMO can be regulated by controlling the post-annealing temperature and pH value of the precursor solution. The as-prepared NMO/NiO nanocomposites exhibited dual Faradaic redox reactions attributed to NMO and NiO, leading to remarkable supercapacitor performance. In addition, the constructed heterojunction between NMO and NiO also improved charge separation, leading to excellent photocatalytic capability. Based on the results, NMO with a higher β-phase content showed better supercapacitive and photocatalytic performance owing to its higher conductivity. The optimal NMO/NiO composite displayed a specific capacitance of 943 F g−1 at 1 A/g and excellent cycling stability, with 83.1 % retention at 5 A/g after 4000 cycles. Additionally, it demonstrated an outstanding photocatalytic capability for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), achieving a rate constant of (0.0113 min−1). © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Shallow and Deep States of Beryllium Acceptor in GaN: Why Photoluminescence Experiments Do Not Reveal Small Polarons for Defects in Semiconductors

Currently, only one shallow acceptor (Mg) has been discovered in GaN. Here, using photoluminescence (PL) measurements combined with hybrid density functional theory, we demonstrate that a shallow effective-mass state also exists for the BeGa acceptor. A PL band with a maximum at 3.38 eV reveals a shallow BeGa acceptor level at 113±5 meV above the valence band, which is the lowest value among any dopants in GaN reported to date. Calculations suggest that the BeGa is a dual-nature acceptor with the “bright” shallow state responsible for the 3.38 eV PL band, and the “dark,” strongly localized small polaronic state with a significantly lower hole capture efficiency.
