Solvents play an essential role in many areas of chemistry and is the cornerstone of understanding reactivity in solution‐phase reactions. Solvent effects have been widely observed in intercalation reactions; however, understanding of the influence of solvents on the thermodynamics and kinetics remains largely elusive in intercalation chemistry. Now, the solvent‐dependent kinetics of ferrocene intercalation into a layered vanadyl phosphate (VOPO 4 ⋅2 H 2 O) host is presented, with a special focus on primary alcohols. From methanol to 1‐hexnaol, the intercalation rate peaks in 1‐propanol (80 times faster than the slowest case in methanol). Similar kinetics of exfoliation are also found in these solvents without ferrocene. The correlation between intercalation and exfoliation is understood at atomic level by DFT calculations, which reveal the role of pre‐intercalated solvent molecules play in intralayer interactions, interlayer expansion, and layer sliding.

This work presents the effect of gamma irradiation on the physicochemical, mechanical, thermal and antibacterial properties of HPMC/ZnO bionanocomposite (BNC) films exposed to a Cobalt – 60 gamma source of average energy 1.25 MeV for various (0-250 kGy) doses. X-ray diffraction (XRD) study revealed that the crystallite size ( L XRD in Å) and crystallinity of the nanocomposites significantly increased up to 100 kGy, then decreased as the radiation dose increased. At lower dosage nanocomposites showed improved Young’s modulus and load capacity, and at higher dosage, the decrease in tensile strength ( TS ) and percentage elongation at break ( E ), suggesting degradation process in the HPMC matrix. Contact angle (CA) studies demonstrated HPMC/ZnO nanocomposites are more hydrophilic after gamma irradiation. The antibacterial activity of HPMC/ZnO nanocomposite films were effective even after gamma irradiation, making it suitable for food and pharmaceutical packaging applications
