The efficiency of phonon-mediated heat transport is limited by the intrinsic atomistic properties of materials, seemingly providing an upper limit to heat transfer in materials and across their interfaces. The typical speeds of conductive transport, which are inherently limited by the chemical bonds and atomic masses, dictate how quickly heat will move in solids. Given that phonon-polaritons (PhPs), or coupled phonon-photon modes, can propagate at speeds approaching 1% of the speed of light – orders of magnitude faster than transport within a pure diffusive phonon conductor – we demonstrate that volume-confined, hyperbolic phonon-polariton (HPhP) modes supported by many biaxial polar crystals can couple energy across solid-solid interfaces at an order of magnitude higher rates than phonon-phonon conduction alone. Using pump-probe thermoreflectance with a mid-infrared, tunable, probe pulse with sub-picosecond resolution, we demonstrate remote and spectrally selective excitation of the HPhP modes in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in response to radiative heating from a thermally emitting gold source. Our work demonstrates a new avenue for interfacial heat transfer based on broadband radiative coupling from a hot spot in a gold film to hBN HPhPs, independent of the broad spectral mismatch between the pump (visible) and probe (mid-IR) pulses employed. This methodology can be used to bypass the intrinsically limiting phonon-phonon conductive pathway, thus providing an alternative means of heat transfer across interfaces. Further, our time-resolved measurements of the temperature changes of the HPhP modes in hBN show that through polaritonic coupling, a material can transfer heat across and away from an interface at rates orders of magnitude faster than diffusive phonon speeds intrinsic to the material, thus demonstrating a pronounced thermal transport enhancement in hBN via phonon-polariton coupling. © 2024, CC BY.

Developing biodegradable oil absorption fibrous materials is essential because discarding conventional separation materials could cause secondary pollution due to their nondegradable properties. In this study, highly hydrophobic and superoleophilic porous polylactic acid (PLA) fibers were prepared using centrifugal spinning combined with nonsolvent-induced phase separation. The porous structure of PLA fibers was controlled by the ratio between good solvent and nonsolvent in the spinning solutions. The morphology and physical properties of the obtained PLA fibers were investigated using various measurement techniques. The PLA fibrous membrane prepared from a PLA solution containing chloroform/dimethylformamide (80/20 w/w) indicated not only a high water contact angle but also a high oil sorption value. The porous PLA fibers are a potential candidate for use as green materials for environmental applications. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Damage is defined as any change to the material, geometry or boundary condition that can modify the structure’s properties or response. In the past, damage identification was performed through periodical inspection, non-destructive testing/non-destructive evaluation, or visual observation. Structural health monitoring (SHM) has emerged to transition from offline damage identification to near real-time and online damage assessment. Hence, SHM is a damage detection strategy to monitor a structure for a period using a series of continuous measurement devices, which then collect the system’s characteristics and subsequently perform statistical analysis to assess the current circumstances and health of the structure. One of the first steps for the study of SHM is damage detection followed by monitoring. Machine Learning (ML) techniques can be used to develop viable algorithms to make potential predictions. ML algorithms are therefore providing the tools needed to enhance the capabilities of SHM systems and provide intelligent solutions to past challenges. Preliminary studies have reviewed that the extension of ML into SHM has dramatically increased the system’s capabilities, providing innovative solutions to different research challenges. The decline in physical, cognitive, and sensory functions for most elderly people leads to the development of several health issues such as memory loss, a tendency to fall, dizziness, and reduced ability to care for oneself independently. These can be mitigated using devices designed to monitor vital signs and human activity such as a smart band. However, the application of a smart band is characterized by a disadvantage which involves storing user data in the vendor's cloud and only one device can access the client applications. Therefore, nurses, doctors, and family members cannot simultaneously analyze data and receive alerts when abnormal conditions occur in elderly patients. This study aims to develop a system capable of monitoring the health conditions of multiple elderly individuals and sending alerts during abnormal conditions based on the heart rate value read by the smart band sensor. The process involved installing a database on the Raspberry Pi to store data while a monitoring system was built on the Node-RED platform to display elderly health data and made it accessible locally. The detection of an abnormal heart rate condition in the elderly patient leads the system to send notifications via telegram to multiple receivers registered in the system using their telegram identity. © 2022 IEEE.

Understanding the effect of curvature on the magnetization reversal of three-dimensional nanohelices

Comprehending the interaction between geometry and magnetism in three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures is of importance to understand the fundamental physics of domain wall (DW) formation and pinning. Here, we use focused electron beam-induced deposition to fabricate magnetic nanohelices with increasing helical curvature with height. Using electron tomography and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, we reconstruct the 3D structure and magnetization of the nanohelices. The surface curvature, helical curvature and torsion of the nanohelices are then quantified from the tomographic reconstructions. Furthermore, by using the experimental 3D reconstructions as inputs for micromagnetic simulations we can reveal the influence of surface and helical curvature on the magnetic reversal mechanism. Hence, we can directly correlate the magnetic behavior of a 3D nanohelix to its experimental structure. These results demonstrate how control of geometry in nanohelices can be utilized in the stabilization of DWs and control of the response of the nanostructure to applied magnetic fields. The accurate description of electronic properties and optical absorption spectra is a long-standing challenge for density functional theory. Recently, the introduction of screened range-separated hybrid (SRSH) functionals for solid-state materials has allowed for the calculation of fundamental band gaps and optical absorption spectra that are in very good agreement with many-body perturbation theory. However, since solid-state SRSH functionals are typically tuned to reproduce the properties of bulk phases, their transferability to low-dimensional structures, which experience substantially different screening than in the bulk, remains an open question. In this work, we explore the transferability of SRSH functionals to several prototypical van der Waals materials, including transition-metal sulfides and selenides, indium selenide, black phosphorus, and hexagonal boron nitride. Considering the bulk and a monolayer of these materials as limiting cases, we show that the parameters of the SRSH functional can be determined systematically, using only the band-edge quasiparticle energies of these extremal structural phases as fitting targets. The resulting SRSH functionals can describe both electronic band structures and optical absorption spectra with accuracy comparable to more demanding ab initio many-body perturbation theory (GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation) approaches. Selected examples also demonstrate that the SRSH parameters, obtained from the bulk and monolayer reference structures, display good accuracy for band structures and optical spectra of bilayers, indicating a degree of transferability that is independent of the fitting procedure.

Synthesizing hydrotalcite-like (HT) CO2 adsorbents from blast furnace slag (BFS) is regarded as a promising strategy for valorizing industrial waste while mitigating CO2 emissions in steel industry. However, conventional methods via acid extraction face challenges due to their high reagent consumption and energy-intensive processes. This study proposes an economical alkaline hydrothermal synthesis method for direct conversion of wet-milled BFS slurry into HT-like adsorbents. Synthesized BFS-HT achieves a total CO2 adsorption capacity of 0.27 mmol CO2/g BFS-LDO after calcination at 400 ℃ and subsequent CO2 capture at 200 ℃, representing 68.8% increase compared to unmilled group. HT phases synthesized in Si-rich solutions exhibit a consistent crystalline structure with chemical-sourced layered double hydroxides (syn-LDH). A hydrothermal post-treatment in deionized water partially removes interlayer Si, further increasing CO2 uptake to 0.30 mmol CO2/g BFS-LDO27Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis identifies Al coordination changes during calcination of HT under the impact of interlayer Si by forming Al-O-Si bond. Density functional theory (DFT) modeling reveals the strong interfacial interactions between defective CaO surfaces and silica nanoparticles, potentially inhibiting subsequent carbonation or rehydration reactions. Overall, alkaline-synthesized BFS-HT achieves 24% of the CO2 sorption capacity of syn-LDH, with much lower consumption of acid/alkaline reagents and shorter hydrothermal treatment times compared to conventional acid methods. These results underscore its promising potential for carbon neutralization in the steel industry. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This study provides an initial exploration and further understanding of the factors that are parameters in evaluating the success of Enterprise Architecture (EA) implementation. An evaluation process is needed to ensure that the EA project implementation provides effectiveness, efficiency, and feasibility of the EA information system as well as assessing previous project experience to avoid future EA project risks. The research aims to present a Systematic Literature Review based on the stages of identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion so that 14 main articles are selected for review with strong actual relevance. The study results provide insights and references that can be used to further explore key factors in evaluating the success of EA implementation in the future. It was found that there were ten factors that most influenced the evaluation of the success of EA implementation and it was concluded that two potential factors were the most influential and required further exploration in evaluating the success of EA implementation which could be applied in various sectors/dimensions. This study contributes as an initial reference for overcoming problems in investigating and exploring the factors that influence the success of EA implementation as an effort to assess the success of achieving future organizational goals.
