Empirical mode decomposition of near-infrared spectroscopy signals for predicting oil content in palm fruits

Oil content estimation in palm fruits is a precious property that significantly impacts oil palm production,starting from the upstream and *** content can be used to monitor the progress of the oil palm fresh fruit bunch(FFB)and be applied to identify product *** on the near-infrared(NIR)signals,this study proposes an empirical mode decomposition(EMD)technique to decompose signals and predict the oil content of palm ***,350 palm fruits with Tenera varieties(Elaeis guineensis ***),at various ages of maturity,were harvested from the Cikabayan Oil Palm Plantation(IPB University,Indonesia).Second,each sample was sent directly to the laboratory for NIR signal measurements and oil content ***,the EMD analysis and arti-ficial neural network(ANN)were employed to correlate the NIR signals and oil ***,a robust EMD-ANN model is generated by optimizing the lowest possible *** on performance evaluation,the proposed technique can predict oil content with a coefficient of determination(R2)of 0.933±0.015 and a root mean squared error(RMSE)of 1.446±*** results demonstrate that the model has a good predictive capacity and has the potential to predict the oil content of palm fruits directly,without neither solvents nor reagents,which makes it environmentally ***,the proposed technique has a promising potential to be applied in the oil palm *** like this will lead to the effective and efficient management of oil palm production.

The general aim of the research was to analyse the scientific production on the circular economy of water in the Web of Science database. The systematic and integrative review used the Methodi Ordinatio, which made it possible to identify the most relevant articles on the circular economy of water. The main findings were the identification of 38 articles on the circular economy of water, in which the years 2018 and 2020 were the years with the most publications. The contexts already studied demonstrated that the circular economy is related to assessing the life cycle, the techniques related to the reuse and recovery of water, education models and strategic issues. The areas surveyed were mainly associated with the public area, tourism, entrepreneurship and manufacturing. It is essential to emphasise the importance of research related to water since the concern with this resource has been observed. The discussions are far from being exhausted;therefore, a proposal for a future agenda has been presented, indicating the direction for future research about the theme. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

Effect of surface plastic deformation on hydrogen embrittlement in Al-Zn-Mg alloy

Al-Zn-Mg alloys in T6 temper are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking based on hydrogen-induced intergranular cracking. Over-aging is effective to suppress hydrogen embrittlement, but results in loss of strength. In this study, sliding friction treatment (SFT) and subsequent aging treatment were applied to an Al-4.4mass%Zn-1.4mass%Mg ternary alloy in order to suppress hydrogen embrittlement without decreasing strength. Mechanical properties and hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility were evaluated by tensile tests in two environments: dry nitrogen gas and humid air. Hardness measurement showed that SFT resulted in increment of the hardness near the specimen surface. The specimen processed by SFT and subsequent aging showed the higher strength compared to the T6-tempered one. Moreover, hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of the specimen processed by SFT and aging was lower than that of T7-tempered one. Fracture surface observation revealed that intergranular cracking was suppressed by SFT and aging. Therefore, SFT followed by aging was effective for the concurrence of high strength and resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. © 2024 The Japan Institute of Light Metals.

An immobilized hydrogen-producing consortium investigated biohydrogen production from food waste using a combination of sodium alginate and cassava rhizome biochar. We investigated the effect of varying the biochar concentration from 0 to 3% and the size of immobilized cells from 1 to 7 mm. Immobilized cells were prepared using 50% (v/v) enriched hydrogen-producing consortium, 2% (w/v) sodium alginate, and 0 to 3% (w/v) cassava rhizome biochar. The optimal conditions for achieving the highest hydrogen production in the batch fermentation reactor were identified as a biochar concentration of 2% (w/v) and an immobilized cell size of 2 mm. The highest hydrogen yield, maximum hydrogen production rate, and lag time recorded were 0.69 mmol H2/g-COD, 0.02 mmol H2/g-COD.h, and 41.51 h, respectively. This research highlights the potential of cassava biochar technology for efficient biohydrogen production from food waste, contributing to renewable energy generation and sustainable waste management. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Circular economy (CE) has emerged as a strong contender for illuminating the path toward sustainability. Although companies are seen as the most important agents of change, the definition of goals and indicators for assessing the adoption of CE at the company level is still in the early phases. A company that wants to contribute to the CE, whether due to the ambition of the stakeholders or legal requirements, needs to understand what is really within its responsibilities and sphere of influence. However, measuring and evaluating the performance of circularity is still not a common practice in companies. In this context, this paper presents the development of the Overall Circularity Effectiveness (OCE) index to assess the circularity level of manufacturing companies by analyzing inputs and outputs. The index was developed following the design research methodology (DRM) with interactions between theory and practice, based on literature review, survey with companies, development, testing, and evaluation with companies. The paper also presents an application of the proposed index into a case study and discusses its usability and usefulness, comparing it with the existing company-level CE measurement approaches. The OCE was constructed to be simple to understand, practical to calculate through quantitative measures, relevant to the CE context, and generic to be applied in any type or size of manufacturing company. Although the index was developed to be used by any manufacturing company, it was applied in only four companies and all with material from the technical cycle. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Automatic essay scoring for discussion forum in online learning based on semantic and keyword similarities

Purpose: The authors constructed an automatic essay scoring (AES) model in a discussion forum where the result was compared with scores given by human evaluators. This research proposes essay scoring, which is conducted through two parameters, semantic and keyword similarities, using a SentenceTransformers pre-trained model that can construct the highest vector embedding. Combining these models is used to optimize the model with increasing accuracy. Design/methodology/approach: The development of the model in the study is divided into seven stages: (1) data collection, (2) pre-processing data, (3) selected pre-trained SentenceTransformers model, (4) semantic similarity (sentence pair), (5) keyword similarity, (6) calculate final score and (7) evaluating model. Findings: The multilingual paraphrase-multilingual-MiniLM-L12-v2 and distilbert-base-multilingual-cased-v1 models got the highest scores from comparisons of 11 pre-trained multilingual models of SentenceTransformers with Indonesian data (Dhini and Girsang, 2023). Both multilingual models were adopted in this study. A combination of two parameters is obtained by comparing the response of the keyword extraction responses with the rubric keywords. Based on the experimental results, proposing a combination can increase the evaluation results by 0.2. Originality/value: This study uses discussion forum data from the general biology course in online learning at the open university for the 2020.2 and 2021.2 semesters. Forum discussion ratings are still manual. In this survey, the authors created a model that automatically calculates the value of discussion forums, which are essays based on the lecturer's answers moreover rubrics. © 2023, Bachriah Fatwa Dhini, Abba Suganda Girsang, Unggul Utan Sufandi and Heny Kurniawati.

The aroma of fragrant rice is one of the grain quality attributes that significantly influenceconsumer preferences and prices in world markets. The volatile compound 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2AP) isrecognized as a key component of the aroma in fragrant rice. The variation in grain 2AP content amongvarious fragrant rice varieties is associated with the expression of the badh2 gene, with 19 alleles havingbeen identified so far. The grain 2AP content is strongly influenced by environmental and managementfactors during cultivation as well as post-harvest conditions. This review pinpointed the major abiotic andbiotic factors that control grain 2AP content. Abiotic factors refer to water, temperature, light quality,fertilizer application (both macro- and micro-nutrients), and soil properties, including salinity, while bioticfactors include microorganisms that produce aromatic compounds, thus influencing the grain aroma infragrant rice. Post-harvest management, including storage and drying conditions, can significantly impactthe grain 2AP content, and proper post-harvest conditions can intensify the grain aroma. This reviewsuggests that there are rice varieties that can serve as potential sources of genetic material for breedingrice varieties with high grain aroma content. It offers an overview of recent research on the major factorsaffecting the aroma content in fragrant rice. This knowledge will facilitate further research on theproduction of high-quality rice to meet the demands of farmers and consumers.

I'm not a puppet, I'm a real boy! Gender presentations by virtual influencers and how they are received

Virtual influencers, or computer-generated virtual characters, have attracted numerous followers on social media like Instagram with their unconstrained physical bodies and persona profiles. Due to the characteristic of visibility and hyperconnectivity of social media, virtual influencers' public presentations can influence their followers and how they respond to virtual influencers and similar influencers as a collective phenomenon. Through a content analysis of 517 posts and 21,724 user comments from 17 of the most popular English-speaking human-like virtual influencers on Instagram, our study investigates how virtual influencers leverage the flexibility in presenting their affect, sexual display, virtual nature, and humanness (biological senses) and how their followers respond to these dimensions accordingly. We compared if female and male virtual influencers followed gender stereotypes in their self-presentations and if the followers responded accordingly. Our findings show that the most popular virtual influencers do not seem to leverage their flexible gender identity, but often present themselves according to gender stereotypes and receive corresponding comments based on their gender. Male virtual influencers are significantly more likely to "pass" as an actual human, while female virtual influencers are more likely to disclose their virtual nature. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd
