A revision of Union College's Introduction to engineering and computer Science course is presented. The change include the introduction of a design project and competition, the presentation of engineering and computer science concepts under a unifying theme, and the introduction of weekly talks from outside speakers. The course instruction also changed from a series of modules taught by different faculty to a structure in which all the faculty taught all the topics in the course. If this approach is used with a group of cooperative faculty, the benefits of the exposure to different teaching styles and understanding of other disciplines can be positive.

Precision farming is an optimized management farming scheme that seeks to link the real-time needs of crops with the nutrients to be administered. Sensing platforms that can monitor the physiological status of crops in situ are key to enabling timely and localized interventions. However, the underdevelopment of plant sensing strategies limits the potential of precision farming. In this Review, we discuss the challenges and advancements in phyto-monitoring, focusing on strategies that are applicable to a wide range of plant species and suitable for field deployment. We explore species-agnostic sensors, including optical and electrochemical sensors, whose operation is based on principles that are widely applicable to all plant species. These platforms enable real-time monitoring of the physiological state of crops by assessing key biomarkers, such as plant hormones, and metabolites such as salicylic acid and reactive oxygen species. Evaluating these systems, we conclude that an integrative sensing approach is necessary to compensate for the limitations of the individual methods and can provide a holistic view of crop health. Cost-effective species-agnostic sensors are thus needed to provide information that can be used to minimize the resource footprint of farming and meet the growing global demand.

Purpose: Collaborating with startups is a fast track to green technological innovation (GTI) implementation for tech firms. On the other hand, startups’ opportunistic behavior during the collaboration could lead to GTI failure and a waste of tech firms’ investment. Accordingly, it is essential to conduct a dynamic analysis of the evolutionary behavior of tech firms and startups over time. In this regard, under government intervention, we consider a collaborative structure between two populations, including tech firms and startups. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, an evolutionary game structure based on system dynamics was developed to explain the tech firms’ and startups’ evolutionary trends, emphasizing investment mechanisms and the startup’s commitment level through a feedback process. For this purpose, the influence of the startups’green innovative efforts on the system’s evolution under two feedback loops was investigated. Furthermore, the effects of tech firms’ penalty strategies and government intervention on system evolutionary behavior was analyzed. Findings: The simulations revealed that applying the dynamic punishment policy can control the game’s oscillations in the evolutionary model and increase the startup’s and tech firm’s stability rate. When the penalty values change, and the startups’ credibility level is a variable under the impact of the green technological innovation features, it affects the evolutionary behavior of players over time through the positive feedback loop. It was also found that, despite the startups' opportunistic behaviors, effective government interference could raise the tech firms' tendency to invest in startups. Originality/value: Unlike previous studies, we focus on a dynamic analysis approach to investigate the collaborative structure between tech firms and startups.
