The advantage of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided surgery, in which MR images taken during surgery are used to guide the surgery, has been recognized recently. However, there is a problem, due to long imaging time of MRI, that it is difficult to capture the respiratory organ motion. It is often a constraint that the patient must hold his or her breath, especially in the treatment of the abdominal region. Consequently, this paper proposes a method of eliminating this constraint in MRI-guided surgery by real-time monitoring of the movement of the organ involved in the surgery by means of the signal derived from MRI. Specifically, the navigator echo is extracted in imaging during surgery. The movement of the organ involved in surgery is detected on the basis of the change in the calculated projection profile, and the results are presented to the surgeon. In this study, the procedure is built into a 1.5-T clinical MRI system. The feasibility of the proposed system was examined under clinical conditions by evaluating its accuracy and delay in a phantom experiment, and also in an in vivo experiment on the liver of a volunteer. The USAID PRIME Security Program Manager Computer Sciences Corporation in Arlington Virginia. He has MS degrees in information and telecommunications systems management and in military science. Cleveland has over 20 years of experience in the planning and management of a wide variety of functions including business process reengineering and IT security.

This article is derived from a Best Security Practice (BSP) developed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Bureau for Management, Information Resources Management (M/IRM), Information systems Security Team. The USAID is an independent agency that provides economic, development, and humanitarian assistance around the world in support of the foreign policy goals of the United States. We present the use of the polysaccharide chitosan for immobilizing biomolecules on microfabricated device surfaces. The main advantages of chitosan are its abundance of primary amine groups and its ability to be electrodeposited. Biomolecules are easily attached to chitosan 's amines by standard glutaraldehyde chemistry. The electrodeposition of chitosan allows accurate spatial and temporal control of biomolecule placement. We have demonstrated this biofunctionalization method for two different bioMEMS devices: a biophotonic sensor and a micromechanical biosensor. We have successfully assembled probe DNA on each of them and detected hybridization with target DNA as a demonstration of sensor operation. Here, we briefly present the fabrication procedure and testing results for both of these bioMEMS sensing devices

A member of the University of Idaho College of Engineering faculty. She graduated from the University of California at Davis. Frincke is the co-director and co-founder of the university's Center for Secure and Dependable Software (CSDS). She was the program chair for the 2nd International Workshop on Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection (RAID). A professor of Computer Science at the College of Integrated Science and Technology at James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in philosophy from the University of Houston. Reynolds is the Director of Information System Security Education at James Madison University. Since 1997 Reynolds has led the development of the first remote Internet-based curriculum that leads to an M.S. degree in computer science with a concentration in information security. Thus far 160 students have completed this program. A professor of computer information systems at Idaho State University and the manager of its Simplot Decision Support Center.

An integral part of the curriculum in the recently developed Master of Science in Telecommunications systems program at the University of Oklahoma - Tulsa is a laboratory course. The course is designed to enhance student understanding of fundamental computer networking principles and to expose students to research tools that can be used in carrying out their capstone research projects. Through a series of sequential laboratory modules, students learn to setup and configure simple to complex computer networks and to effectively employ commercial software tools for network design and performance analysis. Near the end of the course, working independently, each student is required to complete a final project that assimilates much of the reinforced and/or newly acquired knowledge and skills. This paper provides a detailed description of the laboratory course and its key project modules.

This paper presents a hybrid integration approach for heterogeneous heavy tailed traffic from multiple classes over a channel of known capacity, where the service times follow lognormal distribution. Using our hybrid integration approach, we formulate a procedure that can minimize delay while improving the channel utilization. We show that this approach yields lower delays than either the integrated or segregated approach described in published literature.

Motive, form and function of international R&D alliances: Evidence from the Chinese IT industry

This article adds to the research literature on international R&D alliances by focusing on alliances formed by multinational corporations with Chinese organizations. Using publicly available information, we developed a sample of 80 international R&D alliances between multinational corporations and Chinese organizations in the information technology industry in China formed during the period from 1997 to 2003. We use these data to test hypotheses on the connections between the declared motives, organizational form and R&D activity function of such alliances. Our analysis shows that the two most frequent motives of multinational corporations when establishing R&D alliances with Chinese organizations are establishing vertical linkages and obtaining human resources. Within the context of a strong preference for non-equity-based cooperative agreements, our analysis also provides some evidence for an association between the choice of form and motive, strong evidence for an association between function and motive, and strong evidence for an association between the form and function. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. Mathematical models are often used in system identification applications. The dynamics of most systems, however, change over time and the sources of these changes cannot always be directly determined or measured. To maintain model accuracy, it is desirable to design system identifiers that can adapt to these dynamical shifts. We use reinforcement learning to train an agent to recognize dynamical changes in a modeled system and to estimate new parameter values for the model. The subsequent actions of this agent are characterized as "moving" the parameterized model on an optimal trajectory in model parameter space. It is found that this method is capable of quickly and accurately discerning the correct parameter values. © 2005 IEEE.

Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) systems offer a solution for broadband access and high data rate transmission of multimedia services with distinct Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements through a wireless medium. IEEE 802.16 Standard specifies the PHY and MAC layers for BWA systems. However, in spite of including the possibility for QoS support, the standard does not define how to schedule different types of traffic. This article propose a new MAC protocol for BWA systems that incorporates a traffic scheduling mechanism based on messages and/or stations priorities. An analytical model to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol is also developed and results obtained for the messages waiting times of different traffic classes are presented. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper discusses performance enhancement in G/G/l queuing systems by segregating traffic flows with disparate characteristics into separate channels. It also presents a hybrid integration approach to lower the mean packet delay. We formulate a procedure for determining the optimal hybrid arrangement using an approximate analytical model for calculating the mean packet delay in G/G/l queues. We apply our findings to different interarrivai and service time distributions, namely, the lognormal and the Pareto distributions. We validate our analytical results with simulations.
