The paper presents a dynamic provisioning mechanism through which service providers can exploit the unused allowable down time of the connections to serve the additional upcoming requests. The algorithm work based on the holding time of the connections and the failure arrival rate over the selected primary or backup paths. The proposed mechanism in this paper routes the requests in a way that any service level agreement (SLA) violation is either avoided or minimized. To achieve this goal, the already established paths are flagged with a newly proposed path metric, path risk factor, to create a memory-aware mechanism of paths' history showing the risk tolerance to SLA violation. This path attribute can be disseminated over the network as a metric of prospective connections. The algorithm takes advantage of the already established connections' history to select the best path regarding the SLA violation with the lowest cost. Simulation results verify that the proposed mechanism has better performance in terms of the blocking rate, the availability satisfaction rate, and the resource utilization than existing algorithms. Performance evaluation is done over two different simulation environments, the network with high link failure arrival rate and the network with normal link failure arrival rate. In addition to the better performance over both network topologies, the algorithm provides more revenue for service providers compared to standard and existing algorithms. © 2011 HTE.

A dual-mode deep transfer learning (D2TL) system for breast cancer detection using contrast enhanced digital mammograms

Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are gold-standard techniques for breast cancer detection. The newly contrast-enhanced digital mammography (CEDM) integrates the complementary strengths of FFDM and MRI, and is being incorporated into the practice of leading institutions. The current clinical practice using CEDM is sub-optimal because it is primarily based on clinicians' trained eyes. Automated diagnostic systems under the conventional machine learning paradigm suffer from drawbacks, such as the requirement for precise segmentation, extraction of shallow features that do not suffice for diagnostic images, and adoption of a sequential design without a global objective. We propose a deep learning (DL)-empowered diagnostic system using CEDM, the core of which is a novel dual-mode deep transfer learning (D2TL) model. The proposed system is innovative in several aspects, including (1) a dual-mode deep architecture design;(2) use of transfer learning to facilitate robust model estimation under small sample-size;(3) development of visualization techniques to help interpret the model results and facilitate inter- and intra-tumor malignancy quantification;and (4) minimization of human bias. We apply D2TL to classify benign vs. malignant tumors using the CEDM data collected from the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. D2TL outperforms competing models and approaches. © 2019, © 2019 “IISE”.

The purpose of this research aims to show a thesis motivation strategy for systems engineering and electronic engineering undergraduates that allow them to obtain their bachelor's degree and professional title according to the three-stage methodology, first: know the technology developments of companies and universities from developed countries, second: to select research topics taking into account the global development, companies issues and the community of university environment, third: disseminate the selected topics and conduct research on these issues with students in their courses. As a methodology application, two universities were visited, one in Germany and another in the United States;each professor developed a research topics portfolio related to their research lines, professional interest and specialization. Students are able to start their final thesis research when they are at the fifth or sixth level. © 2019 IEEE.

The professional training of the electronic engineer must include competencies such as research, technological development and innovation. According to Peruvian Technical Standard NTP 732.001, technological development is the application of knowledge for the creation or improvement of products or processes or management up to the level of demonstrative pilots, and the technological development project activity (TDP), is linked to the design and implementation of a prototype that solves a requirement of reality. The research question is, which approach should address the management of activities RDI so that technological development projects allow contributing to develop new competencies in the engineer and preserve the knowledge generated? The UNPRG's Electronic engineering program aims to be a successful program thanks by its competitive professionals, its links with companies for activities RDI, valued by the knowledge generated by its students and professors, and the appropriate approach should be based on knowledge management and interdisciplinarity. © 2019 IEEE.

To improve the vocabulary ability is very important in language learning. Thus, if we can learn and remember a word very effectively, then we will be able to master a language more quickly. Therefore, many scholars began to propose related research. Due to the learning mechanism of human brain, sometimes when people learn a new knowledge they may forgot at a short time. In order to make the consideration more complete, after analyzing Hermann Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve experiment, we added two variables, one is the acceptance of each word by the same person, and the other is the ability of different people to remember vocabulary. With the above two parameters, we want to design a system to help user to review the vocabulary which may be forgetting before. The forgetting curve can be personalized, and it is more accurate to calculate the best time for each user to review the vocabulary. © 2019 IEEE.

Since October 2005, the business and engineering faculties of the Milwaukee School of engineering (MSOE) have been working on a novel effort to integrate entrepreneurship into the engineering curricula. Our methods bring together business and engineering students, two groups that normally do not interact in their course of study, to work together on a team design project. The challenge is to introduce entrepreneurship education without significantly increasing the workload on faculty and students. With the help of a grant from the Kern Entrepreneurship Education Network (KEEN) and the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA), MSOE will offer entrepreneurship education to engineering students by formally integrating business topics into already ambitious business and engineering programs. In this paper, we present the joint findings and progress of the engineering college and the business school to develop an entrepreneurial spirit on our campus. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

This paper describes a co-evolutionary algorithm for generating simple spatially oriented tactics and considers whether students can learn better by playing against co-evolved opponents or by playing against an expert system or other similar hard-coded opponent. Although a number of artificially intelligent tutoring and e-learning systems exist, our work looks at using co-evolution to generate competent opponents for human students to learn from. This paper describes and discusses early results on using computationally intelligent opponents for tactical training of human students. Initial results indicate that the learning environment for human players, measured by game difficulty and transfer of training, is comparable across co-evolved and hard-coded computer opponents. © 2010 IEEE.

The current state of the world economy has made Software-As-A-Service (SaaS) an appealing concept for organizations with a small budget for IT infrastructure investment. In a SaaS setup, companies subscribe software applications on a pay-per-use system from external service providers over the internet. However, these companies are looking for a decision framework that can be used to prioritize business software applications for SaaS migration. This paper attempts to fill in this gap by proposing a hybrid methodology which is composed of a total system life cycle (SLC) cost analysis for cost estimation and the analytic network process (ANP) for prioritization. Real test case data is used to validate the decision making capability of the framework. Sensitivity analysis was done to determine the robustness of the recommendations using Monte Carlo simulation. Results show that the proposed methodology could aid managers prioritizes software application projects for SaaS migration. © 2012 Newswood Limited. All rights reserved.

For companies to have a competitive advantage, they need to extract relevant information from data and for that, they need to complement their own data with other data sources. Data marketplaces are platforms on which data providers and data consumers do business. However, every data interaction incurs a monetary cost. Therefore, data consumers are interested in buying a set of interesting views that fit their (goal and) budget. Views allow data to be represented visually, enabling users to make sense of patterns and insights. Besides allowing for easier cost control, buying a set of views bundled together increases the chance of finding what consumers want over buying them view-by-view. Selecting the suitable views to compose an interesting bundle is non-trivial, due to the vast number of view combinations that potentially meet the data consumer's needs. In this paper, we address the problem of view bundle recommendation in data marketplaces, in which the utility of a bundle depends on the interplay among candidate views. We propose the use of Self-Organizing Maps as a means to compute this interplay and use a Genetic Algorithm to design near-optimal bundles. Our empirical results demonstrate that our approach can effectively aid data consumers to find relevant view bundles under budget constraints. © 2022 IEEE.
