To model the periodicity of beats, state-of-the-art beat tracking systems use 'post-processing trackers' (PPTs) that rely on several empirically determined global assumptions for tempo transition, which work well for music with a steady tempo. For expressive classical music, however, these assumptions can be too rigid. With two large datasets of Western classical piano music, namely the Aligned Scores and Performances (ASAP) dataset and a dataset of Chopin's Mazurkas (Maz-5), we report on experiments showing the failure of existing PPTs to cope with local tempo changes, thus calling for new methods. In this paper, we propose a new local periodicity-based PPT, called predominant local pulse-based dynamic programming (PLPDP) tracking, that allows for more flexible tempo transitions. Specifically, the new PPT incorporates a method called 'predominant local pulses' (PLP) in combination with a dynamic programming (DP) component to jointly consider the locally detected periodicity and beat activation strength at each time instant. Accordingly, PLPDP accounts for the local periodicity, rather than relying on a global tempo assumption. Compared to existing PPTs, PLPDP particularly enhances the recall values at the cost of a lower precision, resulting in an overall improvement of F1-score for beat tracking in ASAP (from 0.473 to 0.493) and Maz-5 (from 0.595 to 0.838). © 2014 IEEE.

Power consumption can be significantly reduced in systems-on-Chip (SoC) by scaling down the voltage levels of the Processing Elements (PEs). The power efficiency of this Voltage Islanding technique comes at the cost of energy and area overhead due to the level shifters between voltage islands. Moreover, from the physical design perspective it is not desirable to have an excessive number of voltage islands on the chip. Considering voltage islanding at an early phase of design as during floorplanning of the PEs can address various of these issues. In this paper, we propose a new cost function for the floorplanning objective different from the traditional floorplanning objective. The new cost function not only includes the overall area requirement, but also incorporates the overall power consumption and the design constraint imposed on the maximum number of voltage islands. We propose a greedy heuristic based on the proposed cost function for the floorplanning of the PEs with several voltage islands. Experimental results using benchmark data study the effect of several parameters on the outcome of the heuristic. It is evident from the results that power consumption can be significantly reduced using our algorithm without significant area overhead. The area obtained from the heuristic is also compared with the optimal, and found to be within 4% of the optimal on average, when area minimization is given the priority.

The last few years have seen considerable interest in the wireless networking research community in analyzing the connectivity of wireless ad-hoc networks formed by a set of nodes distributed in a two dimensional plane (deployment area) with a (i) uniform probability density function and (ii) uniform transmission range. Although several important and interesting results are known in this domain, most of the connectivity studies consider a fault-free scenario where all nodes are available for network formation and do not consider failures among nodes caused by one reason or another. In very few studies where faults are considered, they are usually considered to be random in nature, i.e., the probability of a node failing is independent of its location in the deployment area. However, such fault scenario is inadequate to capture many realistic situations where the faulty nodes are spatially correlated. This is particularly true in combat environment where an enemy bomb can destroy a subset of nodes confined to a region. In this paper we investigate the impact of region-based faults on the connectivity of wireless networks. Through analysis and simulation, we provide results relating the probability of a network being connected as transmission range and the size of fault-region are varied. If d min (G) denotes the minimum node degree of the network, we provide the analytical expression for P(d min (G) ¿ k), which represents the probability of the minimum node degree being at least k, for k = 1. Moreover, we compute P(¿(G) ¿ k), where ¿(G) represents the connectivity of the graph G formed by the distribution of nodes in the deployment area and examine the relationship between P(d min (G) ¿ k) and P(¿(G) ¿ k) when k = 1.

In this paper strategies to control the speed of a generic DC motor system are discussed. They range from the conventional, like PID and state-feedback, to reference model adaptive algorithms such as MRAC, VS-MRAC and DMARC. The goal of this study is to determine the best control strategy for high-performance applications regarding to stability, robustness and optimal controller effort. In theory and sometimes in practice, all these control strategies proof themselves reliable, however, in heavy-duty set-point references the application requires high performance of the controller under disturbances, unmodeled dynamics and variable speed reference conditions. The use of appropriate control strategies can highly contribute to this purpose. To support the conclusions, the control strategies have been embedded in a microcontroller PIC18F4520 and applied to a test motor in order to obtain experimental results. © 2018 IEEE.

Energy efficient mapping and voltage islanding for regular NoC under design constraints

Computational energy consumption of the processing elements (PEs) of a NoC can be significantly reduced by scaling down their voltage levels. This creates clusters of adjacent PEs operating at the same voltage level, known as voltage islands. Excessive number of voltage islands is undesirable from the physical design perspective and due to the overhead of level shifter energy consumption between adjacent voltage islands. Considering these issues during mapping of the PEs to the NoC routers, can potentially lead to acceptable solutions with reduced overall energy consumption. In this paper, we formulate the mapping problem as an optimisation problem. We present both optimal solution, obtained by solving a mixed integer linear program (MILP), and heuristic solution based on random greedy selection. Experimental results using benchmark and real applications show that the heuristic finds near-optimal solution in almost all cases in a very small fraction of the time required to achieve the optimal solution. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications are currently an appealing concept for organizations with a small budget for IT infrastructure investment. By definition, in a SaaS setup, companies subscribe software applications on a pay-per-use system from external service providers over the internet. However, managers are looking for a decision framework that can be used to prioritize business software applications for migration into a SaaS environment. This paper attempts to fill in this gap by proposing a hybrid methodology which is composed of a total system life cycle (SLC) cost analysis for cost estimation and the analytic network process (ANP) for prioritization. Real test case data is used to validate the decision making capability of the framework. Sensitivity analysis was done to determine the robustness of the recommendations using Monte Carlo simulation. Results show that the proposed methodology could aid managers prioritizes software application projects for SaaS migration.

The Swift parallel scripting language allows for the specification, execution and analysis of large-scale computations in parallel and distributed environments. It incorporates a data model for recording and querying provenance information. In this article we describe these capabilities and evaluate the interoperability with other systems through the use of the Open Provenance Model. We describe Swift's provenance data model and compare it to the Open Provenance Model. We also describe and evaluate activities performed within the Third Provenance Challenge, which consisted of implementing a specific scientific workflow, capturing and recording provenance information of its execution, performing provenance queries, and exchanging provenance information with other systems. Finally, we propose improvements to both the Open Provenance Model and Swift's provenance system. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Speech content is closely related to the stability of speaker embeddings in speaker verification tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture based on self-constraint learning (SCL) and reconstruction task (RT) to remove the influence of phonetic information on speaker embedding generation. First, SCL is used to reduce the divergence of frame-level features, which can avoid ambiguity between the resulting embeddings of the two utterances being compared. Second, RT is used to further remove phonetic information in frame-level layers, focusing on speaker-discriminative feature transformation. In our experiments, the speaker embedding models were trained on the VoxCeleb2 dataset and evaluated on the VoxCeleb1, Librispeech, SITW and VoxMovies datasets. Experimental results on VoxCeleb1 show that the proposed DROP-TDNN system reduced the EER by 7.5%, compared to the state-of-the-art ECAPA-TDNN system. Furthermore, the proposed DROP-TDNN system also outperformed the ECAPA-TDNN system in the experiments on SITW, Librispeech and VoxMovies under cross-dataset conditions. In the experiments on SITW, the proposed system reduced the EER by 3.4% compared to the ECAPA-TDNN system. In the experiments on Librispeech, the proposed system demonstrated the advantage of removing phonetic information under the clean speech condition, with a significant reduction of 25.5% in EER compared to the ECAPA-TDNN system. In the experiments on VoxMovies, the proposed system reduced the EER by up to 7.9% compared to the ECAPA-TDNN system under different pronunciation and background conditions. © 2014 IEEE.

Real-time social interactions and multi-streaming are two critical features of live streaming services. In this paper, we formulate a new fundamental service query, Social-aware Diverse and Preferred Organization Query (SDSQ), that jointly selects a set of diverse and preferred live streaming channels and a group of socially tight viewers for organization of a live multi-streaming soiree. We prove that SDSQ is NP-hard and inapproximable within any factor, and design SDSSel, a 2-approximation algorithm with a guaranteed error bound. Moreover, we study SDSQ-T, a special case of SDSQ, where the social graph is a threshold graph, and propose TDSSel, a 2-approximation algorithm without any error to SDSQ-T. We propose two pruning strategies, PCP and CDP to boost SDSSel and TDSSel. We further propose a more challenging but practical service query, Generalized Social-aware Maximum Preferred and Diverse Query (GSPQ), a generalization of SDSQ. We design GPDSel, a 4-approximation algorithm for GSPQ with a guaranteed error bound. We propose a strategy to improve the approximation ratios of the proposed algorithms. A user study on Twitch validates SDSQ, and the large-scale experiments on real datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithms over several baselines for live-streaming services. © 2008-2012 IEEE.

Dual-lifecycle software processes have the potential to significantly improve the way in which suites of software applications are generated and sustained. However, several outstanding issues need to be more adequately addressed before the full potential of this philosophy can be realized. Detailed strategies for maintaining domain architectures in parallel with suites of fielded applications are at present particularly conspicuous by their absence. In this paper, we present a dual-lifecycle maintenance process that was developed for the ROSE (Reusable Object Software engineering) project, a major reengineering and repository-building effort in the domain of flight design and dynamics. We present the major features of the process, the rationale behind these features, and changes which we feel would be beneficial based on lessons learned from the application of the process. The process is presented using a variant of the Fusion object-oriented design method known as Profusion.
