Postdoctoral training positions are becoming more common in the human factors and ergonomics (HFE) discipline. However, conversations related to training in the HFE discipline have largely focused on undergraduate and graduate education. This panel assembles both postdoctoral mentors and former trainees who collectively have a diverse set of HFE-related postdoctoral experiences. By panelists discussing their experiences, observations, and recommendations related to postdoctoral training with the audience, the panel session will support HFE faculty and students in making more informed decisions about if and how a postdoctoral experience (either as a mentor or trainee) could be a part of their career development in HFE. © 2023 Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

The XHSTT was proposed as a standard format to express a wide range of School Timetabling problems. Although the format is powerful to represent different timetabling features, its application to University Course Timetabling (UCT) problems was not formally studied. The goal of this work is to present encodings from Curriculum-Based Course Timetabling (CB-CTT) and Post-Enrolment Course Timetabling (PE-CTT) to XHSTT and to evaluate how a state-of-art XHSTT solver performs on these problems. Computational experiments performed suggested that this approach is suitable for dealing with UCT: XHSTT solver would be ranked as fourth in CB-CTT track of the Second International Timetabling Competition (ITC2007) and it achieved feasible solutions for most PE-CTT instances within one hour. Although the results do not outperform the best known approaches for these problems, XHSTT solvers were designed to handle a wide range of features and constraints beyond the ones present in these models, making it able to fit the specific requirements of several universities. © PATAT *** rights reserved.

The creation of tools, techniques and methodologies to support the manipulation of large data sets has been receiving special attention of both scientific and industrial communities, in order to discover new ways of dealing with the underlying information, including learning purposes, identification of patterns, decision making support, amongst others. However, making use of computing resources to enhance awareness and understanding of software information and the software itself is still a challenge in software/systems engineering, since it involves the identification of suitable mechanisms, adequate abstractions, and studies on stimulation of the human perceptive and cognitive abilities. This paper presents some of the challenges in this context, based on current trends of software development lifecycle, program comprehension, and software engineering education. At the end, a special focus is given on ongoing research on using and improving current mechanisms for supporting software reuse practices and software comprehension in general.

In clinical diagnosis of mood disorder, a large portion of bipolar disorder patients (BDs) are misdiagnosed as unipolar depression (UDs). Clinicians have confirmed that BDs generally show "reduced affect'' during clinical treatment. Thus, it is expected to build an objective and one-time diagnosis system for diagnosis assistance by using machine-learning techniques. In this study, facial expressions of BD, UD and control group (C) elicited by emotional video clips are collected for exploring temporal fluctuation characteristics of intensities of facial muscles expression among the three groups. The differences of facial expressions among mood disorders are investigated by observing macroscopic fluctuations. To deal with these problems, the corresponding methods for feature extraction and modeling are proposed. From the viewpoint of macroscopic facial expression, action unit (AU) is applied for describing the temporal transformation of muscles. Then, modulation spectrum is used for extracting short-term variation of AU. The multilayer perceptron (MLP)-based disorder prediction model is then applied to obtain the prediction results. For evaluation of the proposed method, 12 subjects for three group are included in the K-fold (K=12) cross validation experiments. The experiment results reached 61.1% classification accuracy, and outperformed the other baseline methods.

This study proposes a long-short term memory (LSTM)-based approach to text emotion recognition based on semantic word vector and emotional word vector of the input text. For each word in an input text, the semantic word vector is extracted from the word 2vec model. Besides, each lexical word is projected to all the emotional words defined in an affective lexicon to derive an emotional word vector. An autoencoder is then adopted to obtain the bottleneck features from the emotional word vector for dimensionality reduction. The autoencoder bottleneck features are then concatenated with the features in the semantic word vector to form the final textual features for emotion recognition. Finally, given the textual feature sequence of the entire sentence, the LSTM is used for emotion recognition by modeling the contextual emotion evolution of the input text. For evaluation, the NLPCC-MHMC-TE database containing seven emotion categories: anger, boredom, disgust, anxiety, happiness, sadness, and surprise was constructed and used. Five-fold cross-validation was employed to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Experimental results show that the proposed LSTM-based method achieved a recognition accuracy of 70.66%, improving 5.33% compared with the CNN-based method. Besides, the proposed method based on integration of the semantic word vector and emotional word vector of the input text outperformed that using the individual feature vector.

Generative adversarial network (GAN) has achieved impressive success on cross-domain generation, but it faces difficulty in cross-modal generation due to the lack of a common distribution between heterogeneous data. Most existing methods of conditional based cross-modal GANs adopt the strategy of one-directional transfer and have achieved preliminary success on text-to-image transfer. Instead of learning the transfer between different modalities, we aim to learn a synchronous latent space representing the cross-modal common concept. A novel network component named synchronizer is proposed in this work to judge whether the paired data is synchronous/corresponding or not, which can constrain the latent space of generators in the GANs. Our GAN model, named as SyncGAN, can successfully generate synchronous data (e.g., a pair of image and sound) from identical random noise. For transforming data from one modality to another, we recover the latent code by inverting the mappings of a generator and use it to generate data of different modality. In addition, the proposed model can achieve semi-supervised learning, which makes our model more flexible for practical applications.

This paper describes a design of an educational platform for a mobile learning architecture, which is a state of the an topic in distance education. The product will allow users to interact in an efficient, flexible, and transparent fashion with a web-based education environment, in this case Module Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment （Moodle）, using Android mobile devices. In order to provide a strong and lasting architecture, the Service Oriented Architecture （SOA） methodology is used given that it allows easy software re-utilization as well as integration of heterogeneous services. The architecture is based on web services implemented with Representational State Transfer （REST）, as it has been demonstrated to be lighter and less consuming than other protocols, for devices with limited resources such as mobile devices. Web services provide the communication means between the server side and the client side of the architecture, whereas agents are used to deliver the services itself. The authors propose the development of an environment that facilitates the integration of various educational resources to support m-learning. An important aspect of the proposal is the offering of a tool to provide customized alerts for students and teachers, enabling them to remain updated about activities taking place in the courses.

Multimedia tutorials available online are becoming popular as a means of providing canned explanations for difficult material for brick and mortar classes and online courses. The availability of free multimedia products like Flashplayer by Macromedia ©and the increasing proliferation of high speed access also provides the perfect set of circumstances to produce and make obtainable tutorials for K-12 children who may be especially challenged in some way. For instance, these tutorials would be appropriate and helpful for non-English speaking children to help them learn English and acclimate to their new American environment. This is the perfect time with the increasing Hispanic population within the borders of the United States. Students in the Computer Sciences and Computer Information systems programs at Florida Institute of Technology have been working on such tutorials that have video, animation, audio, text, and images to help get across new ideas and topics to school age children. At the same time, software engineering methods for designing such tools are being developed and explored. The scope of this research is being extended to include audio in multiple languages for non-English speaking students. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

This paper proposes a distributed-memory parallel routing algorithm for FPGAs based on the partitioning of the routing graph under special FPGA architectural constraints. Coarse-grain parallelism is adopted by assigning different processors to the routing of nets within different partitions of the routing graph. The experimental results have demonstrated that TDR can achieve linear and superlinear speedups in relation to the state-of-art VPR router even when it is running on an Ethernet cluster of workstations. However, it usually requires more tracks than VPR for routing the same circuit. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.
