A planing hull high-speed ferry with a stepped hull becomes a well-liked mode of water transportation for archipelago countries. On the other hand, the shape of steps on the bottom hull has not been recently taken into explicit consideration regarding the speed requirement and hydrodynamic properties. In this study, the step W shapes, were adopted to find the improved hydrodynamic performance in the planing conditions. To provide a more precise prediction of the pressure, velocity fields, and void fraction, the CFD was applied the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and coupled with Volume of Fluid Method (VOF) to capture air cavity The numerical conditions of the planing hull were trimmed by the stern with 2, and 3 degrees. This study discussed the air cavity that occurred behind the stepped area that can affect the hydrodynamic behaviour. © 2023 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

In the event of loss of roadbed on an electric railway line due to typhoon or heavy rain damage caused by abnormal weather, or damage to a subway pole due to an unexpected train derailment, installation of catenary poles for emergency recovery is necessary to restore the electric railways. Conventional emergency catenary poles are made of steel, so they are very heavy, and the length per unit is large, making transportation and installation inconvenient. Also, there is a risk of industrial accidents due to workers' musculoskeletal disorders. In this study, we developed an emergency recovery catenary pole using aluminum, a lightweight material, and researched and developed a slimmer rail fastening device that can also be applied to concrete ballast. The developed product underwent factory testing and reference testing, was assembled and installed on a field test, and then a safety test was performed. The product developed is expected to minimize disruption to train operations and prevent industrial accidents for related workers by safety and quickly restoring electric railways. Air-side economizers are increasingly used to take advantage of“free-cooling”in data centers with the intent of reducing the carbon footprint of ***,they can introduce outdoor pollutants to indoor environment of data centers and cause corrosion damage to the information technology *** evaluate the reliability of information technology equipment under various thermal and air-pollution conditions,a mechanistic model based on multi-ion transport and chemical reactions was *** model was used to predict Cu corrosion caused by Cl_(2)-containing pollutant *** also accounted for the effects of temperature(25℃and 28℃),relative humidity(50%,75%,and 95%),and *** also identified higher air temperature as a corrosion barrier and higher relative humidity as a corrosion accelerator,which agreed well with the experimental *** average root mean square error of the prediction was 13.7Å.The model can be used to evaluate the thermal guideline for data centers design and operation when Cl_(2)is present based on pre-established acceptable risk of corrosion in data centers’environment.

Recently, urban floods have frequently occurred and severely affected urban activities in developing cities. To minimize the impacts of transport from urban flooding, it is essential to implement adaptation measures in the transport field. Firstly, it is crucial to understand the impacts of travel behaviors and traffic states from urban flooding. Therefore, this study focused on the relationship between travel speed and inundation depth and evaluating adaptation measures in the transport field. The relationship between travel speed and inundation depth was analyzed based on the probe data. A traffic assignment model was developed to evaluate the raising arterial road measure as an adaptation measure in the transport field while reflecting the analysis results of relationships between travel speed and inundation depth. This found that the implementation in raising arterial road measure for the western bypass could be an effective adaptation measure by reducing Vehicle Kilometer Traveled (VKT) by 65% while decreasing the number of detoured by 5000 vehicles compared to the flooding situation without taking any adaptation measures. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Facilitating Emergency Vehicle Passage in Congested Urban Areas Using Multi-agent Deep Reinforcement Learning

Emergency Response Time (ERT) serves as a pivotal metric of urban resiliency and public safety, encapsulating a city’s capacity to respond promptly and effectively to medical, fire, and crime emergencies. Over the last decade, increasing urbanization and traffic congestion have severely exacerbated ERT, undermining emergency management systems and public trust. In New York City (NYC), average ERT for medical emergencies has surged by 72% from 7.89 minutes in 2014 to 14.27 minutes in 2024, with over 50% of delays attributable to prolonged Emergency Vehicle (EMV) travel times. These escalating delays have dire consequences: every minute of delay during a stroke can lead to the loss of 2 million brain cells, and survival rates for cardiac arrest diminish by 7–10% per minute. This underscores the urgency of addressing EMV travel inefficiencies through advanced routing and traffic management strategies. This dissertation responds to these critical challenges by advancing the state of EMV facilitation through three substantive contributions. First, it introduces EMVLight, a decentralized multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) framework that dynamically integrates EMV routing and adaptive traffic signal pre-emption. EMVLight leverages real-time traffic data and decentralized coordination between agents to optimize EMV travel paths while reducing disruptions to non-EMV traffic. Experimental results demonstrate a 42.6% reduction in EMV travel times and a 23.5% decrease in the average travel time for non-EMVs across synthetic and real-world traffic networks. Second, the dissertation develops the Dynamic Queue-Jump Lane (DQJL) system, which employs Multi-Agent Proximal Policy Optimization (MAPPO) to enable coordinated lane-clearing maneuvers in mixed-traffic environments comprising autonomous and human-driven vehicles. Wrong-way driving(WWD)has been a long-lasting issue for transportation agencies and law enforcement,since it causes pivotal threats to road *** being rare,crashes occurring due to WWD are more severe than other types of *** order to analyze WWD crashes,there is a need to obtain WWD incidents or crash ***,it is time-consuming to identify actual WWD crashes from potential WWD crashes in large crash *** often involves large man-hours to review hardcopy of crash narratives in the police ***,it may cause an overestimation or underestimation of WWD crash *** fill this gap,the present study,as the first-of-its-kind,aims at identifying actual WWD crashes from potential WWD crashes in police reports by using machine learning ***,Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers(BERT)models have shown promising results in natural language *** this study,we implemented the BERT model as well as five conventional classification algorithms,including Naïve Bayes(NB),Support Vector Machine(SVM),Decision Tree(DT),Random Forest(RF),and Single Layer Perceptron(SLP)to classify crash report narratives as actual WWD and non-WWD ***-validation and different performance metrics were used to evaluate the performance of each classification *** indicated that the BERT model outperformed in identifying actual WWD crashes in comparison with other algorithms with an accuracy of 81.59%.The BERT classification algorithm can be implemented to reduce the time needed to identify actual WWD crashes from crash report narratives.

As the end-users increasingly can provide flexibility to the power system, it is important to consider how this flexibility can be activated as a resource for the grid. Electricity network tariffs is one option that can be used to activate this flexibility. Therefore, by designing efficient grid tariffs, it might be possible to reduce the total costs in the power system by incentivizing a change in consumption patterns. This paper provides a methodology for optimal grid tariff design under decentralized decision-making and uncertainty in demand, power prices, and renewable generation. A bilevel model is formulated to adequately describe the interaction between the end-users and a distribution system operator. In addition, a centralized decision-making model is provided for benchmarking purposes. The bilevel model is reformulated as a mixed-integer linear problem solvable by branch-and-cut techniques. Results based on both deterministic and stochastic settings are presented and discussed. The findings suggest how electricity grid tariffs should be designed to provide an efficient price signal for reducing aggregate network peaks.

Computer vision has been used in many areas such as medical, transportation, military, geography, etc. The fast development of sensor devices inside camera and satellite provides not only red-greed-blue (RGB) images but also multispectral dataset with some channels including RGB, infrared, short-wave, and thermal wave. Most of the dataset is panchromatic (black and white) and RGB, for example Google Map and other satellite-based map applications. This study examines the effects of multispectral dataset for semantic segmentation of land cover. The comparison between RGB with band 2 to band 7 of Landsat 8 Satellite shows an improvement of accuracy from 90.283 to 94.473 for U-Net and from 91.76 to 95.183 for DeepLabV3+. In addition, this research also compares two well-known semantic segmentation methods, namely U-Net and DeepLabV3+, that shown that DeepLabV3+ outperformed U-Net regarding to speed and accuracy. Testing was conducted in the Karawang Regency area, West Java, Indonesia. © 2023 IEEE.

As Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) gain popularity, managing their charging becomes crucial for grid stability. Smart charging programs can help utilities manage this demand and integrate more renewable energy by controlling when and how BEVs are charged. However, these programs require participation from BEV owners, who may be hesitant to freely provide such control. This study uses a discrete choice experiment (also called conjoint analysis) to measure BEV owners' willingness to participate in smart charging programs under various incentives and features. We examine two types of smart charging: Supplier-Managed Charging (SMC), which controls charging times, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), allowing BEVs to return power to the grid. In an online survey conducted via Facebook and Instagram ads, we collected 858 valid responses, with 815 responses for SMC program choices and 414 for V2G program choices. We used mixed logit (MXL) models to quantify respondents' willingness to participate. The findings indicate a general reluctance to participate in both programs without some form of incentive, with respondents being most sensitive to recurring monetary incentives. For SMC, there is also concern about ensuring sufficient battery levels in the mornings. Simulations were conducted to predict enrollment rates based on different program features. Additional data will be collected to refine the models in the coming months.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system can be considered as an Internet-of-Things (IoT) system implemented to engineering structure to provide real-time information on the integrity of the structure. In doing so, the system acquires data from various sensors distributed across the structure and infers damage sensitive quantities. In the research, we proposed a damage index derived from the governing dynamics of the structure in the frequency domain. The proposal was empirically verified by applying the index to analyze the case of a cracked cantilever beam subjected to a harmonic load. The value of the damage index was computed at some points surrounding the crack to understand the effect of the distance of the monitoring point to the crack to the index sensitivity. The results suggest that the index is sensitive to the crack particularly when the observation point is near the crack. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
