We employed Periodic Density Functional Theory (DFT) to investigate the catalytic activity of single and double dopant of boron (B), nitrogen (N), and phosphorous (P) anchored on diamond surfaces for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) by analyzing reaction energy profiles. Our findings show that the double-doped catalyst exhibits lower energy barriers in CO2RR compared to the single dopants. Specifically, when considering BB and NN configurations, there is a thermodynamic preference towards the formation of formic acid (HCOOH) with overpotentials of 0.40 and 0.09 V, respectively. The co-doped catalyst comprising B and N (BN) demonstrates a tendency towards the formation of HCOOH without requiring any applied overpotentials. Notably, BN outperforms other catalysts, occupying the top position on the volcano plot, indicating the lowest limiting potential (UL), remarkable thermal stability, and the ability to suppress the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This research provides valuable insights into the product differentiation in the electroreduction of CO2. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Estimating the rank of a corrupted data matrix is an important task in data analysis, most notably for choosing the number of components in PCA. Significant progress on this task was achieved using random matrix theory by characterizing the spectral properties of large noise matrices. However, utilizing such tools is not straightforward when the data matrix consists of count random variables, e.g., Poisson, in which case the noise can be heteroskedastic with an unknown variance in each entry. In this work, we consider a Poisson random matrix with independent entries, and propose a simple procedure termed biwhitening for estimating the rank of the underlying signal matrix (i.e., the Poisson parameter matrix) without any prior knowledge. Our approach is based on the key observation that one can scale the rows and columns of the data matrix simultaneously so that the spectrum of the corresponding noise agrees with the standard Marchenko-Pastur (MP) law, justifying the use of the MP upper edge as a threshold for rank selection. Importantly, the required scaling factors can be estimated directly from the observations by solving a matrix scaling problem via the Sinkhorn-Knopp algorithm. Aside from the Poisson, our approach is extended to families of distributions that satisfy a quadratic relation between the mean and the variance, such as the generalized Poisson, binomial, negative binomial, gamma, and many others. This quadratic relation can also account for missing entries in the data. We conduct numerical experiments that corroborate our theoretical findings, and showcase the advantage of our approach for rank estimation in challenging regimes. Furthermore, we demonstrate the favorable performance of our approach on several real datasets of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), High-Throughput Chromosome Conformation Capture (Hi-C), and document topic *** Codes 62H12, 62H25. General framework for the mechanical response of metallic glasses during strain-rate-dependent uniaxial compression

Experimental data on compressive strength σmax versus strain rate ɛ̇eng for metallic glasses undergoing uniaxial compression show varying strain rate sensitivity. For some metallic glasses, σmax decreases with increasing ɛ̇eng, while for others, σmax increases with increasing ɛ̇eng, and for certain alloys σmax versus ɛ̇eng is nonmonotonic. To understand their strain rate sensitivity, we conduct molecular dynamics simulations of metallic glasses undergoing uniaxial compression at finite strain rates and coupled to heat baths with a range of temperatures T0 and damping parameters b. In the T0→0 and b→0 limits, we find that the compressive strength σmax versus temperature T obeys a “chevron-shaped” scaling relation. In the low-strain-rate regime, σmax decreases linearly with increasing T, whereas σmax grows as a power law with decreasing T in the high-strain-rate regime. For T0>0, σmax(T) deviates from the scaling curve at low strain rates, but σmax(T) rejoins the scaling curve as the strain rate increases. Enhanced dissipation reduces compression-induced heating, which causes σmax(T) to deviate from the b→0 scaling behavior for intermediate strain rates, but σmax(T) converges to the high-strain-rate power-law scaling behavior at sufficiently high strain rates. Determining σmax(T) as a function of b and T0 provides a general framework for explaining the strain rate sensitivity of metallic glasses under compression.

Jakarta is one of the most air polluted cities in the world, it can increase the risk of healthy of commuting worker. As one of the most air polluted cities in the world, Jakarta is at high risk of its commuting worker’s health. They are at risk of being exposed to pollutant. This study aims to determine the factors influencing directly and indirectly to healthy behavior (using masker) for commuting workers who use the KRL Commuterline Bogor - Jakarta. A total of 155 respondents participated in the study and the collected data were then analyzed using descriptive and path analysis. Commuters are aware of the hazard potential related to air pollution during commuting were 137 people (88.4%). Commuters with good perception of pollution were 104 people (67.1%). Commuters used masker during commuting was 125 people (80.6%). Healthy behavior (using masker) in commuting worker using KRL Commuter Line were affected by some factors both directly and indirectly. Knowledge and commuting experience toward healthy behavior using masker were two variables with a significant direct influence on healthy behavior using masker, and knowledge was also the only mediated variable with a significant indirect effect of education to healthy behavior (using masker). © 2021, CC BY.

How Does ChatGPT Perform on the United States Medical Licensing Examination? The Implications of Large Language Models for Medical Education and Knowledge Assessment

Background: Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) is a 175-billion-parameter natural language processing model that can generate conversation-style responses to user input. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the performance of ChatGPT on questions within the scope of the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 and Step 2 exams, as well as to analyze responses for user interpretability. Methods: We used 2 sets of multiple-choice questions to evaluate ChatGPT’s performance, each with questions pertaining to Step 1 and Step 2. The first set was derived from AMBOSS, a commonly used question bank for medical students, which also provides statistics on question difficulty and the performance on an exam relative to the user base. The second set was the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) free 120 questions. ChatGPT’s performance was compared to 2 other large language models, GPT-3 and InstructGPT. The text output of each ChatGPT response was evaluated across 3 qualitative metrics: logical justification of the answer selected, presence of information internal to the question, and presence of information external to the question. Results: Of the 4 data sets, AMBOSS-Step1, AMBOSS-Step2, NBME-Free-Step1, and NBME-Free-Step2, ChatGPT achieved accuracies of 44% (44/100), 42% (42/100), 64.4% (56/87), and 57.8% (59/102), respectively. ChatGPT outperformed InstructGPT by 8.15% on average across all data sets, and GPT-3 performed similarly to random chance. The model demonstrated a significant decrease in performance as question difficulty increased (P=.01) within the AMBOSS-Step1 data set. We found that logical justification for ChatGPT’s answer selection was present in 100% of outputs of the NBME data sets. Internal information to the question was present in 96.8% (183/189) of all questions. The presence of information external to the question was 44.5% and 27% lower for incorrect answers relative to correct answers on the NBME-Free-Step1 (P<.001

Local and global measures of the shear moduli of jammed disk packings

Strain-controlled isotropic compression gives rise to jammed packings of repulsive, frictionless disks with either positive or negative global shear moduli. We carry out computational studies to understand the contributions of the negative shear moduli to the mechanical response of jammed disk packings. We first decompose the ensemble-averaged, global shear modulus as 〈G〉=(1−F−)〈G+〉+F−〈G−〉, where F− is the fraction of jammed packings with negative shear moduli and 〈G+〉 and 〈G−〉 are the average values from packings with positive and negative moduli, respectively. We show that 〈G+〉 and 〈|G−|〉 obey different power-law scaling relations above and below pN2∼1. For pN2>1, both 〈G+〉N and 〈|G−|〉N∼(pN2)β, where β∼0.5 for repulsive linear spring interactions. Despite this, 〈G〉N∼(pN2)β′ with β′≳0.5 due to the contributions from packings with negative shear moduli. We show further that the probability distribution of global shear moduli P(G) collapses at fixed pN2 and different values of p and N. We calculate analytically that P(G) is a Γ distribution in the pN2≪1 limit. As pN2 increases, the skewness of P(G) decreases and P(G) becomes a skew-normal distribution with negative skewness in the pN2≫1 limit. We also partition jammed disk packings into subsystems using Delaunay triangulation of the disk centers to calculate local shear moduli. We show that the local shear moduli defined from groups of adjacent triangles can be negative even when G>0. The spatial correlation function of local shear moduli C(r⃗) displays weak correlations for pnsub2<10−2, where nsub is the number of particles within each subsystem. However, C(r⃗) begins to develop long-ranged spatial correlations with fourfold angular symmetry for pnsub2≳10−2.

A Human-Centered Design Approach to SOVTE Straw Phonation Instruction

Objectives: Extensive research has demonstrated that straw/tube phonation exercises produce positive effects on the voice quality of the user. The purpose of this study was to explore pedagogical practices employed by a range of voice professionals when using SOVTEs by applying human-centered design approaches to examine workflow and communication between teachers and students. Method/Design: The researchers conducted a series of five participatory role-playing workshop activities at a multi-disciplinary vocology conference that included speech-language pathologists, voice scientists, physicians, singing teachers, acting voice teachers, choral directors, and singers. Volunteers were asked to assume the role of teaching or learning straw phonation exercises. The other participants from each workshop were asked to provide written and verbal feedback regarding the teacher/student dynamics and what they found most important and relevant in terms of best practices for SOVTEs. Expert evaluators subsequently provided similar feedback based on video recordings of the workshops. Results: While there was variability noted in teaching techniques and results, common themes emerged in the analysis. Successful and unsuccessful student and teacher techniques were identified by the workshop participants. Through the video analysis, the research team identified themes in instructional teaching, experiential learning, and straw articulation and mechanics. Conclusions: The benefits of straw/tube phonation exercises on voice quality have been well-established and are clear. As we continue to refine best practices in SOVTEs and, in particular, straw phonation, involvement of experts in HCD as part of multidisciplinary teams may lead to the eventual design of SOVTE tools that provide greater precision, consistency, and effectiveness both in clinical and pedagogical settings, and aid in the differentiation of SOVTE approaches within the taxonomy of vocal habilitation and rehabilitation te

HiPoNet: A Topology-Preserving Multi-View Neural Network For High Dimensional Point Cloud and Single-Cell Data

In this paper, we propose HiPoNet, an end-to-end differentiable neural network for regression, classification, and representation learning on high-dimensional point clouds. Single-cell data can have high dimensionality exceeding the capabilities of existing methods for point clouds which are tailored for 3D data. Moreover, modern single-cell and spatial experiments now yield entire cohorts of datasets (i.e. one on every patient), necessitating models that can process large, high-dimensional point clouds at scale. Most current approaches build a single nearest-neighbor graph, discarding important geometric information. In contrast, HiPoNet forms higher-order simplicial complexes through learnable feature reweighting, generating multiple data views that disentangle distinct biological processes. It then employs simplicial wavelet transforms to extract multiscale features—capturing both local and global topology. We empirically show that these components preserve topological information in the learned representations, and that HiPoNet significantly outperforms state-of-the-art point-cloud and graph-based models on single cell. We also show an application of HiPoNet on spatial transcriptomics datasets using spatial co-ordinates as one of the views.
