Computation of heat transfer in magnetised Blasius flow of nano-fluids with suspended carbon nanotubes through a moving flat plate

This paper examines a two-dimensional steady, incompressible and laminar hydro-magnetic flow along with the transfer of heat above a plane plate that contains water and ethylene glycol-based nano-fluids with multi- and single-wall CNTs. The plate surface is subjected to variable wall temperatures. The transfer of heat has been contemplated in suspended CNTs above a plane plate. Navier–Stokes and the concept of the Prandtl boundary layer have been used to determine the governing equations of heat transfer and flow. Since the attained governing equations representing energy and flow are non-linear PDEs, they are altered into non-linear ODEs accompanied by analogous boundary conditions by applying several appropriate similarity transformations. Hence, the ‘bvp4c’ function is used to solve them numerically. Various graphs with physical interpretation demonstrate the consequence of determining terms on the characteristics of the flow. The plate velocity parameter and volume fraction have a positive effect. Temperatures are elevated markedly for most of the governing parameters. The rate of heat transfer and temperature exponent are enhanced by a magnetic field. SWCNTs give more substantial heat transfer than MWCNTs. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

This paper introduces the development and implementation of a Top-order Multi-step Block Method (TMBM) tailored for the numerical solution of third-order boundary value problems (BVPs) in ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Traditional numerical methods often face challenges in accurately solving such complex problems, especially in scenarios where higher-order accuracy and computational efficiency are paramount. The methodology adopts the principle of collocation and interpolation in its derivation. The TMBM combines the benefits of higher-order accuracy and block processing techniques to provide robust solutions while maintaining computational tractability. Through a comprehensive analysis and three numerical experiments, the efficacy and advantages of the TMBM are demonstrated, showcasing its potential for addressing a wide range of third-order BVPs encountered in various scientific and engineering applications. © 2024 IEEE.

Effects of Catheter, Stenosis and Thrombosis in Non-Newtonian Blood Flow Through Narrow Arteries with Clinical Applications: A Mathematical Model

This study analyses the rheological characteristics of non-Newtonian Carreau fluid model for nanoparticles suspended flow of blood through constricted arteries in the presence of stenosis, thrombosis and catheters. Analytical expressions, such as, velocity distribution, temperature, pressure gradient, wall shear stress and resistive impedance to flow are obtained by implementing the perturbation method and through the extensive use of MATLAB and MATHEMATICA programming tools, the results are presented graphically and tabularly. It is found that temperature of the fluid lessens with the increase in stenosis shape parameter and depth of stenosis which results in the reduction of flow of blood in the artery. It is discovered that a rise in Weissenberg number results in the decrease of fluid’s velocity and skin friction. The magnitude of resistance to blood flow reduces with the upsurge of flow rate and stenosis shape parameter and the reverse character is recognized when Weissenberg number, the depth and axial displacement of blood clot increases. When the angioplasty catheter of radius 0.3 is inserted to the clear the constrictions in the artery, the resistance to flow surges considerably in the range of 6.75–8.78 when the stenosis position extends in the axial direction from 0.1 to 0.3. It is also recorded that when the catheter guidewire radius is 0.18, the pressure gradient in blood flow is found to vary in the range of 1.21–1.43 when the axial variable z varies from 0.2 to 0.8 and it decreases from 1.36 to 1.32 when the blood clot position displaces from 0.2 to 0.6. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature India Private Limited.

This paper focuses on using zero-stable multistep formulae with evenly spaced off-grid points to numerically simulate differential equations originating from applied mathematics and engineering. The new multistep formulae used the differential system's collocation and power series interpolation as an approximated solution. In order to concurrently provide numerical solutions for the problems under consideration, the primary integrator and its auxiliary integrators are combined and applied. The integrators' theoretical analysis was examined and determined to be consistent with the current linear multistep method theorem. The techniques's theoretical analysis were determined such as the order and error constants, consistency, zero-stability, convergency and the stability were also determined. The numerical outcomes of the techniques's analysis contrasted with those of a few previously used techniques. The findings showed that the approach would provides greater accuracy than several other approaches already in use in the literature, making it a significant improvement over those approaches. © 2024 IEEE.

This study presents the generalized third-order difference operator with constant coefficients and inverse, allowing us to construct a sequence similar to the generalized k-Fibonacci sequence. We refer to this sequence as the generalized Tribonacci sequence and prove certain lemmas and theorems regarding its generalized Tribonacci sums. CONTEXT Dropout from engineering studies at tertiary level remains a persistent global problem. The social psychology theory of mindset explains how behaviour necessary for successful engagement with challenging academic content can be derailed by beliefs about intelligence as fixed-at-birth rather than growth mindset beliefs that intelligence can always be further developed. Given the complexity of research involving humans and the early stage of mindset research in tertiary settings, it is not surprising that the results of a recent systematic literature review on growth mindset interventions in engineering education did not identify a leading intervention. However, the review suggested that growth mindset interventions should address the broader education context and not only individual students. PURPOSE OR GOAL Of all subjects, mathematics is one where fixed mindset beliefs are more frequently seen in the general population. High performing students may be at risk from the negative effects of a fixed mindset when they encounter new challenges at university. This research explores the potential of creating growth or fixed mindsets through the words used in mathematics questions. Examples from mathematics assessment tasks will be analysed to see how they align with mindset principles described in a taxonomy by Boaler (2015). APPROACH OR METHODOLOGY/METHODS A modified version of the Delphi Technique was used to reach consensus on the applicability of Boaler's taxonomy to undergraduate mathematics courses. Questions from past assessments from first-year mathematics courses were compiled, based on their potential to match the categories in Boaler's taxonomy. In six meetings over three months, all three authors discussed and classified the selected questions into the categories from Boaler's taxonomy. Where questions did not fit, modifications were brainstormed to see if modified questions could align with one or more categories from the taxonomy. ACTUAL OR ANTICIPATE

This study developed a novel generalized family of probability distributions known as the Odd F generalized family of distribution. The compound Odd F-Weibull distribution was introduced from the Odd F generalized family. This distribution is an alternative to various current distributions, such as the Beta-Weibull distribution, Generalized Modified Weibull, Log-Logistic-Weibull, Frechet-Weibull and Exponentiated Exponential-Weibull distributions. We obtained the distributions of quantile function, moments and information-generating function. Moreover, the parameters of its estimates were derived using the maximum likelihood approach. Furthermore, monthly Nigerian Naira to British Pound exchange rate data was analyzed to verify the viability of developed model. The findings demon-strate that the Odd F-Weibull model outperformed better than competitive distributions by having minimal corrected akaike information and Bayesian information criteria values. © 2022 IEEE.

First-order growth models are fundamental in economics, finance, and various scientific disciplines for modeling dynamic processes. Solving these models numerically is often challenging due to their complex nature. Hybrid block methods have emerged as promising tools for efficiently and accurately solving such models. This article provides a comprehensive development, analysis and implementation of hybrid block method applied to the numerical solution of first-order growth models. We discuss the theoretical foundations, algorithmic implementations, and practical applications of these methods, highlighting their advantages and limitations. Additionally, we present numerical examples and comparisons with other numerical techniques to assess the performance of hybrid block method. Through these insights, we aim to provide insights into the state-of-the-art techniques for solving first-order growth models numerically. © 2024 IEEE.

A fractional-order tuberculosis model with efficient and cost-effective optimal control interventions

This study is concerned with applying fractional calculus in modelling tuberculosis (TB) transmission dynamics. A new six-dimensional fractional-order mathematical model in the sense of the Caputo derivative operator is formulated to capture memory effects in the spread process of tuberculosis. Some key features such as vaccination, forces of TB infection, and exogenous re-infection by two actively infectious classes are considered. Banach fixed point theory is employed to prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution for the fractional-order model. Equilibrium points and effective reproduction number of the model are determined. Analysis reveals that the model exhibits backward bifurcation where stable TB-free and TB-present equilibrium points co-exist when the effective reproduction number is below unity. Some sensitive parameters of the model are identified to help design intervention measures against the disease. Hence, four time-dependent controls, namely advocacy effort against infection and re-infection, vaccination control, prophylaxis against latent infection, and treatment control, are considered to form a fractional-order optimal control model. The controls are characterized using Pontryagin's maximum principle. Efficiency and cost-effectiveness assessments are conducted to quantify the most efficient and cost-effective intervention plan to minimize TB spread in the population. Behaviours of the fractional-order TB model at varying values of the order of the Caputo derivative are extensively explored to show memory effects in the transmission dynamics of the disease. © 2023 The Author(s)
