Lyapunov Function Based Steering Law for Generalized Voronoi Diagram (GVD) Construction by a Mobile Robot

Motion planning of an autonomous robot in an unknown environment is a challenging task. The prerequisite of any motion planning task is collision avoidance. This paper aims on designing a steering control-law for constructing Generalized Voronoi Diagram (GVD) of an unknown environment. The GVD is a roadmap which offers a maximum clearance path and hence a reliable method to avoid collisions. The GVD comprises of edges and nodes. The GVD node is considered a primary feature of topological localization. This paper proposes a modification in the steering control law for smooth tracing of GVD edge using curvature information at closest points on the obstacle. The proposed modification leads the mobile robot to reach the unknown GVD node. This modification is necessary without which the robot leaves a GVD edge and traces another GVD edge bypassing the GVD node. The modification is suggested based on the geometry of the GVD construction. The proposed steering law is verified using simulations. The simulation result shows that the mobile robot reaches the GVD node with an accuracy of ±0.001 unit distance.

Background: Previous attempts to characterise the burden of chronic respiratory diseases have focused only on specific disease conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. In this study, we aimed to characterise the burden of chronic respiratory diseases globally, providing a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis on geographical and time trends from 1990 to 2017. Methods: Using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017, we estimated the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality attributable to chronic respiratory diseases through an analysis of deaths, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and years of life lost (YLL) by GBD super-region, from 1990 to 2017, stratified by age and sex. Specific diseases analysed included asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary sarcoidosis, pneumoconiosis, and other chronic respiratory diseases. We also assessed the contribution of risk factors (smoking, second-hand smoke, ambient particulate matter and ozone pollution, household air pollution from solid fuels, and occupational risks) to chronic respiratory disease-attributable DALYs. Findings: In 2017, 544·9 million people (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 506·9–584·8) worldwide had a chronic respiratory disease, representing an increase of 39·8% compared with 1990. Chronic respiratory disease prevalence showed wide variability across GBD super-regions, with the highest prevalence among both males and females in high-income regions, and the lowest prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia. The age-sex-specific prevalence of each chronic respiratory disease in 2017 was also highly variable geographically. Chronic respiratory diseases were the third leading cause of death in 2017 (7·0% [95% UI 6·8–7·2] of all deaths), behind cardiovascular diseases and neoplasms. Background: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Understanding the current state of the HIV epidemic and its change over time is essential to this effort. This study assesses the current sex-specific HIV burden in 204 countries and territories and measures progress in the control of the epidemic. Methods: To estimate age-specific and sex-specific trends in 48 of 204 countries, we extended the Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model to also implement the spectrum paediatric model. We used this model in cases where age and sex specific HIV-seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care-clinic sentinel surveillance data were available. For the remaining 156 of 204 locations, we developed a cohort-incidence bias adjustment to derive incidence as a function of cause-of-death data from vital registration systems. The incidence was input to a custom Spectrum model. To assess progress, we measured the percentage change in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 (threshold >75% decline), the ratio of incident cases to number of people living with HIV (incidence-to-prevalence ratio threshold <0·03), and the ratio of incident cases to deaths (incidence-to-mortality ratio threshold <1·0). Findings: In 2019, there were 36·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 35·1–38·9) people living with HIV worldwide. There were 0·84 males (95% UI 0·78–0·91) per female living with HIV in 2019, 0·99 male infections (0·91–1·10) for every female infection, and 1·02 male deaths (0·95–1·10) per female death. Global progress in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 was driven by sub-Saharan Africa (with a 28·52% decrease in incident cases, 95% UI 19·58–35·43, and a 39·66% decrease in deaths, 36·49–42·36). Robust controller Design for Discrete Fractional Order System: A Disturbance Observer based Approach

This paper, investigates the one of open problems of robust controller design for discrete fractional order system. For achieving the specified goal a disturbance observer is constructed based on full state information. After that an extra compensator based on theory of disturbance observer is added to the classical state feedback. It is also shown that after applying the proposed controller closed loop system would become robust against disturbance as the estimation error gets reduced. Effectiveness of the proposed scheme is illustrated by the simulation results.

A Guidance Law for a Mobile Robot for Coverage Applications: A Limited Information Approach

In this paper a guidance law has been proposed to solve applications related to coverage of a pre-defined area using a mobile robot. In many situations, it may not be possible to measure all the information due to practical limitations or from computational point of view. So, we have used only range information to solve the above specified problem. The target point is considered to be stationary in this particular case. Now, for any initial condition for which the velocity vector of the robot is perpendicular to the line of sight with respect to the stationary target, the autonomous agent displays interesting behaviours which have been analysed theoretically. All the analytical results obtained here have been validated through MATLAB simulations also.

Variable Gain Super Twisting controller for the Position Stabilization of Stewart Platform

The Stewart platform manipulator is a 6 degrees of freedom parallel robot with a superior performance over serial robots. A variable gain super twisting algorithm ensuring global finite time convergence to the desired sliding surface is proposed for the position stabilization of the Stewart platform. For a given position of the platform, the leg lengths are estimated using inverse kinematics and corresponding leg velocities are obtained using a super twisting observer. The desired position of the platform is achieved using the proposed controller even in the presence of matched disturbances. The effectiveness of the proposed controller has been proved with the simulation results.

Recent developments in the attitude control of a rigid body include the development of almost globally stabilizing coordinate-free control laws. However, all of these results focus on external actuation. In this paper, we observe that the frequently used way of stabilization by error functions can also be given a Hamiltonian interpretation. We show that there exists a class of control laws which are applicable for both external and internal actuation. We also construct such control laws, motivated by the potential energy of a spinning top.

It is important to gather knowledge of orientation of the robot at any pose in many mobile robotic tasks. A visual compass is a technique that matches images to find the orientation of a robot. These images are collected at the reference and current pose of the robot. A robust visual compass technique is proposed to determine the orientation of the robot at any pose with respect to a reference direction using multiple cameras for unknown dynamic environment. The multiple camera system is the only sensor used to develop visual compass technique. The method estimates the orientation of the robot by finding first coarse and then fine angle difference between reference and current positions. The experiments in indoor and outdoor dynamic environment validate that the proposed visual compass technique estimates the orientation of a mobile robot with respect to its orientation at reference position within ±5° error. The proposed technique does not use expensive image processing tasks such as feature extraction and feature matching.
