FAULT DETECTION USING CORRESPONDENCE ANALYSIS: APPLICATION TO TENNESSEE EASTMAN CHALLENGE PROBLEM

This paper presents an approach based on the use of correspondence analysis (CA) for the task of fault detection and diagnosis. Unlike other tools (PCA / DPCA) that are used for this latter task, CA is shown to use a different metric to represent the information content in the data matrix X . Decomposition of the information represented in the metric is shown to yield superior performance from the viewpoints of data compression, discrimination and classification as well as early detection of faults. We demonstrate these performance improvements over PCA and DPCA on the Tennessee Eastman problem, which is a representative benchmark problem used in the literature. CA is shown to yield vastly superior performance for the monitoring of the TE problem, when compared with PCA and DPCA.

DIAGNOSIS OF FAULTS WITH VARYING INTENSITIES USING POSSIBILISTIC CLUSTERING AND FAULT LINES

In this paper, a new approach for fault detection and isolation that is based on the possibilistic clustering algorithm is proposed. Fault detection and isolation (FDI) is shown here to be a pattern classification problem, which can be solved using clustering and classification techniques. The possibilistic clustering approach was proposed to address some of the short comings of the fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm. The probabilistic constraint imposed on the membership value in the FCM algorithm is relaxed in the possibilistic clustering algorithm. Because of this relaxation, the possibilistic approach is shown in this paper to give more consistent results in the context of the FDI tasks. The proposed approach addresses the issue of correctly isolating a fault that may occur with varying intensities. The concept of fault lines is introduced, which in conjunction with possibilistic clustering has been effectively used for FDI. Fault signatures that change as a function of the fault intensities are represented as fault lines, which are shown to be useful to classify faults that can manifest with different intensities. The proposed approach has been validated here through simulations involving a co-polymerization reactor simulation.

Esophageal speech is a restoration of speech communication in laryngectomized patient. Due to irregular pharyngoesophageal (PE) segment vibration and aerodynamic limitation, the esophageal phonation provides higher volatility of the fundamental frequency (f0) compared with laryngeal phonation. It is difficult to determine an accurate f0 in esophageal speech. This paper focuses on algorithms for f0 modification. Linear predictive coding (LPC) and autocorrelation function are used to calculate the f0. They are well performed in the normal case. However, the determination results of f0 in esophageal speech are highly unstable without any modification of a conventional LPC technique. By proposing a smoothing technique, an accurate f0 and pitch period in esophageal speech can be determined and used in LF model. Experimental results from 18 subjects suggest that average f0 of esophageal phonation is lower than laryngeal phonation. The speech synthesized using this proposing technique produced better sound quality than un-processed esophageal speech. © 2006 Research Publishing Services.

The pseudo continuous current mode (PCCM) operation of a boost converter can be treated as an intermediate between the continuous current mode (CCM) and discontinuous current mode (DCM) operation. The advantages in DCM operation and CCM operation can be effectively compromised to get this intermediate operation. In addition, the control flexibility and stability in DCM operation of a boost converter can be attributed to the PCCM operation as far as the control design is concerned. In this paper, three types of mode switched control designs based on the hybrid automaton model, namely, system theoretical design, circuit theoretical design and energy based design for a PCCM boost converter are analyzed and compared. Analysis, control design and simulation results are presented.

This paper features the modelling and design of a type of multirate output feedback based controller (Fast Output Sampling Feedback-FOS) to control the flexural vibrations of a smart flexible Timoshenko cantilever beam for a Single Input Single Output (SISO) case by retaining the first 2 dominant vibratory modes. Piezoelectric patches are bonded as sensor / actuator to the master structure at different finite element locations along the length of the beam. The beam structure is modelled in state space form using the concept of piezoelectric theory, the Timoshenko beam theory and the Finite Element Method (FEM) technique and by dividing the beam into 4 finite elements and placing the piezoelectric sensor / actuator at one discrete location as a collocated pair at a time, i.e., as surface mounted sensor / actuator, say, at FE position 1 or 2 or 3 or 4, thus giving rise to 4 SISO models of the same plant. FOS feedback controllers are designed for the above 4 models of the same plant. The piezo sensor / actuator pair is moved from the free end to the fixed end of the beam. The effect of placing the collocated sensor / actuator pair at various finite element locations along the length of the beam is observed and the conclusions are drawn for the best performance and for the smallest magnitude of the control input required to control the vibrations of the flexible beam. © 2013, UK Simulation Society. The primary purpose of this research work is to develop a speech recognition system, which will be capable of recognizing and interpreting an individual's voice. This will thus obviate the use of keyboards and other such input devices to output the data. The scope of this work is limited to the recognition of digits. Matlab, a versatile software tool is made use of for the processing of the signals. This processing involves filtering, shaping, correlating the speech signal which will enable the computer to interpret the commands given by the user. The signature of every spoken digit is unique from which we can derive the parameters which differ from digit to digit. These parameters serve as a concrete base for the implementation of a speaker independent voice recognition system. Using such parameters simultaneously and using probability concept the digits are sorted and arranged in the descending order of their probability. The digit with the highest probability is displayed. © 2005 SICE.
