Background: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Understanding the current state of the HIV epidemic and its change over time is essential to this effort. This study assesses the current sex-specific HIV burden in 204 countries and territories and measures progress in the control of the epidemic. Methods: To estimate age-specific and sex-specific trends in 48 of 204 countries, we extended the Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model to also implement the spectrum paediatric model. We used this model in cases where age and sex specific HIV-seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care-clinic sentinel surveillance data were available. For the remaining 156 of 204 locations, we developed a cohort-incidence bias adjustment to derive incidence as a function of cause-of-death data from vital registration systems. The incidence was input to a custom Spectrum model. To assess progress, we measured the percentage change in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 (threshold >75% decline), the ratio of incident cases to number of people living with HIV (incidence-to-prevalence ratio threshold <0·03), and the ratio of incident cases to deaths (incidence-to-mortality ratio threshold <1·0). Findings: In 2019, there were 36·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 35·1–38·9) people living with HIV worldwide. There were 0·84 males (95% UI 0·78–0·91) per female living with HIV in 2019, 0·99 male infections (0·91–1·10) for every female infection, and 1·02 male deaths (0·95–1·10) per female death. Global progress in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 was driven by sub-Saharan Africa (with a 28·52% decrease in incident cases, 95% UI 19·58–35·43, and a 39·66% decrease in deaths, 36·49–42·36). Elsewhere, the incidence remained stable or increased, whereas deaths generally decreased. Discrete Trail Training (DTT) is an intervention method used by behaviour analysts for teaching skills to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) around a table using physical materials and artefacts. Traditional DTT suffers from these main challenges: inconsistency due to human limitations;need for repeatedly focusing child's attention on the trail at hand as children with ASD suffer from short attention spans;and disruptions on account of in-session data recording and analysis by the analysts while delivering the training. Developed in collaboration with HCI and behaviour analysis experts, our proposed solution is an interactive, tabletop software application that provides the consistency and integrity that DTT aims to achieve, while engaging the child's attention on the interactive interface, and seamlessly collecting and analysing in-session data in the background. Upcoming usability evaluations of the prototype promise to provide insight into the potential effectiveness of our prototype. © 2014, Australian computer Society, Inc.

Inexpensive and readily available metal foils have been extracted and sculptured into nanocomposites without the expense of applied energy. The unwanted corrosion phenomenon has been contrarily utilized to realize desirable 3D nanostructures through a corrosion‐mediated self‐assembly (CMSA) method, which is unattainable by conventional 2D patterning routes. By virtue of electrochemical dissolution/re‐deposition initiated by brass corrosion, ionic derivatives (Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ ) are continuously supplied and seized by etchant ions (PO 4 3− ) to self‐assemble into well‐defined nanocomposites. Beyond 3D geometry patterning, CMSA enables arbitrarily tailoring of structures and chemical compositions with in situ multiphase amalgamation of hybrid materials, which improves homogeneity and thus mitigates phase separation issues. Importantly, the CMSA technique is demonstrated on transition metals for functional photocatalytic applications.

Think-Pair-Share (TPS) is a classroom-based active learning strategy, in which students work on a problem posed by the instructor, first individually, then in pairs, and finally as a classwide discussion. TPS has been recommended for its benefits of allowing students to express their reasoning, reflect on their thinking, and obtain immediate feedback on their understanding. While TPS is intended to promote student engagement, there is a need for research based evidence on the nature of this engagement. In this study, we investigate the quantity and quality of student engagement in a large CSl class during the implementation of TPS activities. We did classroom observations of students over a period of ten weeks and thirteen TPS activities. We determined patterns of student engagement in the three phases using a real-time classroom observation protocol that we developed and validated. We found that 83% of students on average were fully or mostly engaged. Predominant behaviors displayed were writing the solution to the problem (Think), discussing with neighbor or writing (Pair), and following class discussion (Share). We triangulated results with survey data of student perceptions. We find that students report being highly engaged for 62% during Think phase and 70% during Pair phase. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

The goals of a typical Networking course for computer science majors include getting students to learn the relevant concepts, delving into details of various protocols, and using Networking utilities. Such focus on low-level details is unlikely to be interesting to non-majors. Also, there is a larger danger of students not understanding the basic concepts due to the perceived complexity in the details and technical jargon. We address both these issues by teaching Networking concepts through solving problems in analogical real-life scenarios. The main idea of our approach is: The instructor poses an analogy problem, students work in groups to devise solutions, followed by a class discussion to map the analogy problem as well as its solution to their corresponding technical details in Networking domain. Thus we emphasize the core concepts of Networking and demystify the specialized technical details. Across three offerings of this course, we have found that: (i) our students' performance on typical Networking questions is comparable or higher than traditionally taught students, (ii) students can solve unseen technical problems, (iii) students' confidence in tackling technical questions is high. In this paper, we have presented the design and invention of an electronic nose (E-nose) that can work and analyze the results via a network system such as LAN or WiFi. The MWCNTs/polymer composites were used as a gas sensor array. The constant current circuit was newly designed for gas sensor measurement. The fabricated E-nose showed a high performance for indoor air monitoring with very low noise.
