An electronic nose (e-nose) system based on polymer/carboxylic-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs-COOH) was developed for sensing various volatile amines such as dimethylamine, dipropylamine, pyridine, and ammonia solution. The SWNTs-COOH were dispersed in the matrix of different polymers; polyvinyl chloride (PVC), cumene terminated polystyrene-co-maleic anhydride (cumene-PSMA), poly(styrene-co-maleic acid) partial isobutyl/methyl mixed ester (PSE), and polyvinylpyrrolidon (PVP). These composites were dropped on interdigitated gold electrodes to make the gas sensors. The response of these sensors to volatile amines was studied by both static and dynamic flow measurement. By using a simple pattern recognition based on the principle component analysis (PCA), the volatile amines can be discriminated. This e-nose will be useful for monitoring the freshness of foods and farm air quality.

This paper describes a model for generating steering behaviors of groups of characters based on the biologically-motivated space colonization algorithm. This algorithm has been used in the past for generating leaf venation patterns and tree structures, simulating the competition for space between growing veins or branches. Adapted to character animation, this model is responsible for the motion control of characters providing robust and realistic group behaviors by adjusting just a few parameters. The main contributions are related with the robustness, flexibility and simplicity to control groups of characters. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

Aligned Si/SiGe nanowire heterostructures have been formed using Au-assisted top-down chemical etching method combined with nanosphere lithography. Since the nanowires are formed from the as-grown films, the heterostructures along the axial axis of the formed nanowires, i.e. axial heterostructures, are replica of the grown layered film structure. Thus SiGe nanowire heterostructures can be readily formed along the axis using an as-grown heterostructured film. By applying a nanosphere lithography technique, the space, diameter, and density of the nanowires can be controlled and readily formed at specifically defined area. Because of the flexibility and simplicity of this method, nanowires with embedded junctions of different doping characteristics and Si/Ge concentrations can be fabricated easily. Si and its Ge alloy nanowires and one dimensional heterostructures formed using this method may have great potential for vertical logic, photovoltaic and memory device applications. ©The Electrochemical Society.

Attribute selection (AS) is known to help improve the results of algorithmic learning processes by selecting fewer, but predictive, input attributes. This study introduces a new ranking filter AS method, the tree node selection (TNS) method. The idea of TNS is to determine significant but fewer attributes by searching through the pre-generated decision tree as information source in the manner of a pruning process. To test the performance of TNS, 33 benchmark datasets (UCI) with various numbers of instances, attributes and classes were investigated along with five known AS methods, and the results were tested with the C4.5 (unpruned) and naive Bayes classifiers. The performance, in terms of classification accuracy improvement, reduction in the number of attributes and the size of the generated decision tree are assessed by various statistical analyses for multiple comparisons. TNS was found to provide the most consistent performance for C4.5 and naive Bayes classifiers, and generated unpruned C4.5 trees with selected fewer attributes were generally found to achieve similar quality to pruned C4.5 trees without any attribute selection.

Air pollution is known to cause adverse effects on human health. While pidemiological studies generally involve statistical/geographical approaches, the use of computer algorithms is yet uncommon. In this study, the K-Maximum Sub-array (K-MSA) algorithm is introduced for the first time in health and environmental science to analyse the association between particulate air pollution with diameter less than 10 μm (PM10), from four years of daily measurements (1998-2002), and acute respiratory hospital admission counts over a wide range of age groups (0 to 98 years) in Christchurch, New Zealand. The morbidity rate was taken from residents within a 2 km diameter of the air pollution monitoring site, located in a residential area. The K-MSA algorithm identifies K maximum threshold values, e.g., what age groups associate most with specific ranges of [PM10] levels, by maximizing the sum of the elements of a selected sub-array of a two-dimensional array. The K-MSA successfully detects that the associations with different [PM10] levels vary between different age groups, and that responses even differ between sexes, and different time period (winter, summer or all seasons). The K-MSA will be an encouraging methodology to investigate how various air pollution levels are related to health or climate in the future to increase knowledge for future air pollution policy making. With the recent introduction of third generation (3G) technology in the field of mobile communications, mobile phone service providers will have to find an effective strategy to market this new technology. One approach is to analyze the current profile of existing 3G subscribers to discover common patterns in their usage of mobile phones. With these usage patterns, the service provider can effectively target certain classes of customers who are more likely to purchase their subscription plans. To discover these patterns, we use a novel algorithm called Artficial Immune Recognition System (AIRS) that is based on the specificity of the human immune system. In our experiment, the algorithm performs well, achieving an accuracy rate in the range of 80% to 90%, depending on the set of parameter values used. Copyright © 2007, Idea Group Inc.

In this paper, we describe a user-oriented reliability model that addresses extensive web content, including many links, and that simultaneously addresses user dynamic navigation behaviour. Computation time is a problem in web systems because content can be tightly coupled. An alternative approach is to skip the consideration of the actual dynamic relationships but this is undesirable because the quality of a web system is bound to the success of a series of user navigations. These issues motivate our study from a user perspective. By parsing the logs, past navigations can be restored to form a flow graph. Our model adopts the idea of cyclomatic complexity to convert the graph to a maximum number of independent paths so that reliability can be computed by discounting the probabilities of unreliable paths. The application of this model can prioritise the fault removal sequence to assist in resource and effort allocation to improve reliability. Copyright © 2007 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
